The Operation Of Faith

The Biblical Definition of FAITH

“To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours.” 2 Pet. 1: 1

“God is the author and finisher of our faith” Hebrews 12: 2

Faith is the substance through which we receive from God, our salvation is from God . Ephesians 2: 8-9 for by grace are ye saved through Faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. We must believe and respond to the Word which then will produce in us faith as a ‘fruit of the Spirit’ .

Faith as a fruit of the Spirit operating in our lives, draws us into close relationship and trust in Him. Faith works by love, and our relationship and spiritual walk, gives us confidence to exercise the impartation of the faith which we receive. The operation of faith is dependent upon our relationship with God. John 15: 4-5 abide in me,and I in you.as the branches cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine no more can ye except ye abide in me.

Jesus said, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you” John 15: 7

There are four foundations for Biblical faith —1. The Promises of God’s Word”All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him, Amen, ” 2 Corinthians 1:20

” .. .. .. by which have been given to us exceeding great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, ” 2 Peter 1: 4

God Gives Faith To Those Who Seek It

Faith is increased by drawing closer to God through prayer and the study of His Word, the Bible.

Paul told the Philippians to be anxious for nothing , but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus .

The members of the Church of God in Philippi believed Gods Word, and they obeyed His commandments. As they listened and followed Pauls instruction on giving their cares to God in believing prayer, their faith was increased.

Another way faith is increased is by reading or hearing examples of faith in the Bible publicly expounded. This is mentioned in Romans 10:17. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Today, we have the complete Word of God in many different translations. The Bible is Gods inspired Word to mankind. When we read the Bible, our faith in God and Jesus Christ to answer our prayers and bring us through impossible situations increases.

What is faith? To summarize, faith is trust, assurance and confidence in God and Jesus Christ. Living faith is not just believing that God exists. It is demonstrated by ones service and obedience to God.

God will increase our faith if we fervently ask Him for it and seek to draw closer to Him in prayer and the reading of His Word.

Faith In Jesus As Faithfulness Loyalty And Commitment

In recent decades, scholars have researched what pi’stis meant in the social context of the New Testament writers. Several scholars who have studied the usage of pi’stis in both early Greek manuscripts and the New Testament have concluded that ‘faithfulness’ is the most satisfactory English translation in many instances. This recent research has prompted some to argue that New Testament faith and belief in Jesus should be understood in terms of faithfulness, loyalty, and commitment to him and his teachings, rather than in terms of belief, trust and reliance. Such an understanding of faith can be integrated well with the moral influence theory of atonement.

Assent to the truth is of the essence of faith, and the ultimate ground on which our assent to any revealed truth rests is the veracity of God. Historical faith is the apprehension of and assent to certain statements which are regarded as mere facts of history. Temporary faith is that state of mind which is awakened in men by the exhibition of the truth and by the influence of religious sympathy, or by what is sometimes styled the common operation of the Holy Spirit. Saving faith is so called because it has eternal life inseparably connected with it, and is a special operation of the Holy Spirit

Whats The Difference Between Faith And Belief

Faith and belief are often used in the same context, sometimes interchangeably, but they are not quite the same thing. Belief is a strongly held opinion about an idea or worldview. Beliefs are also opinions that you form about what you read, hear, or see. Beliefs can change over time, as you grow and learn new things. Faith is not something you start and build from faith can only be received, it must be given by God. True faith can take on doubts and questions, but it remains intact. We can grow in our faith, but the foundation is always the same. James 2:19 says,

“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe thatand shudder.”

You can believe there is a God, even that there is one God, but do you believe He is your God? God produces faith in us by giving us new hearts and opening our eyes to see that He is our God and we need Him. Does your faith in God change the way you live your life? There are some who say they believe in God, but the way they live their life does not change they are motivated by other factors. Faith changes how we live our lives, faith motivates us to keep moving in life.

Faith As Steadfastness In Reasoned Belief

C.S. Lewis described his experience of faith in his book Mere Christianity by distinguishing between two usages of the word. He describes the first as follows: “Faith seems to be used by Christians in two senses or on two levels … In the first sense it means simply Belief.” Several paragraphs later he continues with “Faith, in the sense in which I am here using the word, is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.”

What Is The Difference Between Faith And Belief

Many in Christianity today use the words faith and belief interchangeably. But is there a difference between these words in the Bible?

Generally they are synonymous, and sometimes they are translated from the same Greek word. Actually, the only time the word belief appears in the New King James Version of the Bible, it is translated from pistis, the word for faith .

But the word believe can carry a different shade of meaning.

The apostle James wrote in his epistle about what he called dead faith. Dead faith is when one believes in God, but does not obey His commandments.

James wrote, You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believeand tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? .

Here believe is translated from a related Greek word, pisteuo. James contrasts simple belief with living faith.

As Christians, we must strive for living faithbelief in God demonstrated by good works according to His laws and commandments. If we simply believe in Jesus Christ, believe that God exists and believe that He is the Creator God, were on the same level of belief as the demons!

But if our belief in these things inspires us to be obedient to God and changes the way we live our life, then we truly have faith and will be considered faithful if we consistently increase and grow in our relationship with God.

How Do You Walk In Faith With God

If you want to walk by faith, you need to release your fear to God and accept the path He leads you down. This is easier said than done, of course. You may not be able to become completely fearless, but you can be courageous and learn to act according to God’s will even when you are afraid of what lies ahead.

How Do We Obtain Faith

As believers, we all have faith. But how did we first obtain it? Romans 10:17 tells us:

So faith comes out of hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

How did we first believe in Jesus Christ? It was through our hearing of the word of Christ, which includes all of the words recorded in the New Testament. Someone may have told us about Jesus Christ and all He did to redeem and save us. As we listened, we began to appreciate Him. While the gospel was being spoken to us our appreciation of Christ increased, until eventually, a spontaneous reaction took place in us: we believed in Him. Previously we may never have thought much about Jesus Christ or even believed He was real, but through hearing the word of Christ, faith was imparted into us.

As an example, lets say you dont know anything about diamonds. At first glance, a diamond looks like a common piece of glass to you. But then a jeweler explains to you how the diamond was formed over thousands of years through tremendous heat and pressure. As you look closer, he tells you about its different characteristics. The more you listen to him and look at the diamond, the more you appreciate its beauty and value. Then if someone offered you a diamond, you wouldnt hesitate to accept it.

How wonderful it is that we all possess faith! In our next post, we discuss how we can be strengthened in our faith and learn to live a life of faith.

How To Grow In Faith

There are several different ways we can grow in our faith.

1. Ask God to increase your faith. If you are struggling in your faith, ask Him for more of it. He will be glad to bestow it through the Holy Spirit.

2. Focus on obeying God. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes, but if you focus on following Gods word and commands, your faith will grow naturally.

3. Spend time reading and hearing Gods word. Spend time every day reading Gods word and soak it into your heart and mind. If your lifestyle is busy, listen to a sermon or a Christian podcast. Putting His word into your heart and soul will fortify your faith in the rough times.

4. Spend time with other believers. We are meant to worship together, pray together, and share our faith with each other. Hearing about others’ journeys in faith can be encouraging. Also study the Bible together, encouraging each other in godly disciplines.

5. Spend time in fervent prayer. Scheduling a specific time each day to spend with God in prayer makes a huge difference. This is your time alone with Him to discuss anything that is on your heart and mind. Be still and listen carefully and your faith will grow in abundance.

What Does Amen Mean

Emunah is faith that results in faithfulness, implying action. It shouldnt be a total surprise then that the word amen shares the root with Emunah. Amen means so be it or may it be so, and shares the root also with eman, meaning to confirm. Add to that haemeen, which means to trust or confide in.

What Is A Profession Of Faith

To put it simply, a profession of faith is publicly declaring about your faith journey with Christ. As mentioned before this can happen through baptism, an outward symbolism of an inner relationship with God. It can also occur by other means such as sharing one’s testimony.

Testimonies can range widely. They can be from a believer who has believed their whole life to a Satanist who decided to dedicate their lives to God when the Gospel convicted them. Everyone has a different story, and we are encouraged to share that with others what we have experienced in Christ.

Baptism is an outward act to symbolize a changed life and profession of faith. Scripture tells us in Acts 2:41“Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” and in Acts 22:16: “And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” Here we need to make a distinction. The act of baptism itself does not save someone. It’s merely symbolic to represent the death to self and being resurrected in Christ . See Ephesians 2:8-9 on what is necessary for salvation.

Biblical Definition Of Faith

What is Biblical Faith?

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at Gods command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:1 3

What is faith? Everybody talks about it, but few take the time to define what it is. The Bible offers a definition from the letter to the Hebrews. Faith is not merely holding to certain teachings, such as that God exists, but rather it is a strong conviction that the world around us is part of a greater plan, Gods plan. Faith means that although at times the world looks chaotic and uncontrolled, we feel deep down that this chaotic world is not where we truly live. Rather, our existences are guided by Gods strength and power.

With faith, the world is more than just a wild place of cruelty and power struggles, of seemingly meaningless deaths and hardships. We are more than mere animals with animal desires. A world seen through the eyes of faith is a world in which each one of us along with everything that happens to us has meaning as a part of a great plan. Faith means that there is more to the world than what we see with our eyes.

Moreover, faith is not just a mental agreement. As the rest of Hebrews 11 illustrates, faith drives action. If we believe there is more to life than what we see, true faith will drive our values, decisions and actions to align with our belief.

An Old Testament Example Of Faith

Another example is that of Daniels three friends who refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzars image of gold. Those who refused to bow to the image were threatened with being thrown into a fiery pit alive.

The three young Jewish men who refused to bow to the image told King Nebuchadnezzar: If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up .

They did not know in advance how God would deliver them from the fiery furnace, whether at that time by saving their physical lives or later in the resurrection. Their faith or trust was the substance of what they hoped for, and it was the evidence of that which was not yet seen or received.

Their faith or trust was built on serving God and obeying His commandments. They believed God would deliver them because they obeyed His commandments and did not bow down to worship any others gods.
