What Is Fornication In The Bible

What Does It Mean If Someone Is Promiscuous

WHAT IS FORNICATION? (according to the Bible)

1 : having or involving many sexual partners : not restricted to one sexual partner or few sexual partners. 2 : not restricted to one class, sort, or person : indiscriminate education cheapened through the promiscuous distribution of diplomas Norman Cousins. 3 : casual, irregular promiscuous eating habits.

Fornication Meaning Sexual Immorality As Used In The Bible

As earlier revealed, one meaning of fornication as used in the Bible is sexual immorality.

Sexual immorality includes all forms of sex that do not conform to accepted morality. Adultery is one form of fornication. See what the Bible teaches on adultery.

Remember that some Bible versions use the word sexual immorality instead of the word fornication but the original word is fornication.

To avoid fornication every man and woman should have his/her own husband/wife.

1 Cor 7:1-2: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Your own husband or wife means that s/he is the only sex partner you have.

And you should render due affection to one another

1 Cor 7:3 let the husband render unto the wife due affection: and likewise also the wife unto the husband

Reason a husband has no authority over his body but his wife and vise-versa.

1 Cor 7:4 the wife has not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband has not power of his own body, but the wife.

This is to ensure that the woman gets the sexual satisfaction she deserves/wants and vise-versa.

Reason Paul said that you should not deny each other sex unless you both agree.

1 Cor 7:5: Do not deprive one another, except it be with consent for a time so that Satan does not tempt you not for your lack of self-control.

All this is to avoid fornication .

In Matthew 15:8-19, Jesus said, “Out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts, of murder, adultery, and fornication, things that defile a person.” Paul also warns that fornication is a sin against your body in 1 Corinthians 6:18, urging believers to flee from it.

In the Old Testament book of Genesis, chapter 39: 9, Joseph tells his seductress, Potiphar’s wife, that he can’t possibly commit such grievous wickedness against the Creator.

Joseph then proceeds and shows believers how to flee from fornication.

The Bible states that God can’t require more from you than you’re capable. 1st Thessalonians 4:3 urges believers to do the will of God, even your sanctification, by abstaining from fornication.

Fornication, according to the Bible, is the only cause that would permit an innocent partner to divorce their spouse and remarry without sinning. In Matthew 19:9, Jesus doesn’t mince words in declaring that fornicators won’t be embraced by the joys of heaven.

The epistles call fornication a work of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21. Again, Paul reiterates to believers in Ephesians 5:3-6 that those found guilty of fornication will face Gods wrath.

Flee Fornication: What The Bible Says About Fornication

Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are Gods. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:1-2

The dictionary meaning of the word fornication means any unlawful sexual intercourse including adultery. In the Bible, the Greek definition of the word fornication means to commit illicit sexual intercourse. What constitutes unlawful sex? Whose laws do we live by? Worldly standards or laws many times do not always line up with the Word of God. The founding fathers of the United States established many laws that were originally based on Christian standards and the laws of the Bible. However, through time the United States has drifted far from these standards and at the present our moral standards are shocking the world. However, immorality is not only found in the U.S. but is a world-wide epidemic. Societies throughout history and around the globe have embraced sexual standards that are called sins in the Bible.

Effects of Fornication on our Lives

End Notes

In Matthew 1: 9 Jesus Stated That If Anyone Divorces Their Wife For Any Reason Other Than Fornication And Marries Another They Commit Adultery

In the Matthew 19:9, Jesus stated that if anyone divorces their wife for any reason other than fornication and marries another, they commit adultery. He was not speaking about people who have been divorced and remarried as an adulterer. He was referring to people who have been divorced for any reason other than adultery. If a man is married, but he has committed adultery with someone elses wife before or after he got married, then that man needs to remain faithful to his woman until death do them part because God will judge him if he doesnt stay faithful until death comes knocking at their door!

If we look at this passage carefully then we see how important marriage really is it wasnt meant just so that two people could sleep together every night without getting bored of each other after awhile no instead it was created by God as a reflection of His love towards us which means that when we go through hard times or get hurt by someone else during our lives together as husband/wife then there are still ways out of these situations even though sometimes those solutions might seem impossible!

The Consequences Of Fornication

What does the Bible say about Fornication?

The bible teaches us that there are many things which are not holy and lead us into. Sin is a violation of Gods word and is not only punishable by God, but is also not good for us.

For when we sin, the devil has been given an ignition to the rest of the damages and shame he brings with him.

The bible says about the things that are unholy:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like of which I tell you beforehand, just as I told you in the past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-20 NKJV

The bible calls them the works of the flesh, and the bible says that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. This is a profound warning for all who want to inherit the kingdom of God to desist from such acts as listed above.

We will however pay special attention to the subject of fornication. It is one of the listed characters that can make even a believer lose the kingdom. Dont forget that Paul was writing this letter to so-called already believers, so it is a warning not just to the unbeliever, but to the believer as well.

Has Christianity Made Up Its Own Meaning Of Fornication To Mean Sex Before Marriage

The Greek word for fornication is porneia, which means harlotry figuratively, idolatry: The NKJ renders fornication as sexual immorality. The NIV renders it as marital unfaithfulness/infidelity. As you can see Christianity has made up its own meaning of fornication to mean sex before marriage. Christianity continues to define and redefine itself. I continue to question Christians in these matters.

Answered by Marshall Beretta, EPM Volunteer

I was not sure from your comments on porneia whether you were arguing for personal support of pre-marital sex. Ill treat the general issue of the word. The Bible in its entirety is clear on sexuality. Words have meaning in context. Looking at a word such as porneia is only a prelude to understanding the specific idea the writer is conveying to the reader within a set of words. In addition, there is usually a broader context within which a set of words is placed. This can be within a sentence, paragraph, theme, chapter, book, testament, or entire work. To fully capture what a writer means for the reader to understand by a word or idea, one must consider its whole context, as well as its immediate context. Even beyond a particular word usage is the greater linguistic context of the languageits origins, historical development, borrowed influences, etc.

B Remember Who We Belong To

The argument for much illicit sex is that this is my body and so long as it’s consensual, I can have whatever sex I desire. This argument is false because it is based on a false premise: that our bodies belong to us. In reality, our bodies are given to us by God as a vessel to carry our eternal souls, also given to us by God. Just because non-believers reject this idea doesn’t make it untrue.

A Christian understands that his life is a stewardship of the body given to him by God and redeemed by the blood of Christ. Our bodies belong to God twice over: once when He created us, and once again when He saved us through Jesus Christ. Paul says that, “our body is not for fornication but for the Lord”

Our bodies belong to God, and we must use our bodies to serve and honor Him. We can serve and honor God with our sexual activity but only when we keep it within the boundaries He has set, otherwise we dishonor ourselves and our Lord.

What Was Jesus’s View On Fornication According To The Bible

In John chapter 8, Jesus is confronted by a mob of Jews who brought to him a woman caught while committing fornication. His silence to the scribes and Pharisees, who sought to ensnare him, can be elaborated in many ways.

To the woman, Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you, and Go and sin no more.

You could rest assured that while the woman was forgiven for the sin of fornication, or adultery, judgment and condemnation did befall her if she persisted in her acts. Jesus at first touted the crowd to throw the first stone, indicating that no one is perfect.

This didn’t excuse the sin, but signified that fornication or adultery was no more excusable before God than rape or homosexuality.

In the same vein, fornication won’t be justified by avoiding pregnancy or attempting to hide the sin by marrying after it’s been committed.

Adultery In The New Testament

The Woman taken in adultery

The New Testament attitude to adultery is more nuanced.

  • On the one hand there is the famous story of Jesus encounter with the woman taken in adultery surely one of the most subtle and beautiful stories in the Bible.
  • On the other hand, the New Testament takes an uncompromising view of adultery, and regards all acts of unchastity as offences against God and against ones neighbor: I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The laxity of sexual morality in the Roman and Jewish worlds was similar to sexual mores in western society today, and this may be why the early Christian church had strict laws. The early Church made no bones about it: Christians must not associate with are those who were sexually immoral .

Galatians 5:16-21 spells it out even more clearly: do not gratify the desires of the flesh. It lists the works of the flesh: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these notice that items of sexual immorality are mentioned first, highlighting their importance.

Even so, Jesus preached compassion and acceptance for someone who truly regretted a sin they had committed as is shown in the story of the woman who anoints Jesus feet with ointment . I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven

It Was Usually Related To The Acts Of Harlotry Or Prostitution

Fornication was usually related to the acts of harlotry or prostitution. Prostitution was not allowed in the Bible however, it was common practice in the ancient world. In fact, when people wanted to have sex outside of marriage they would go to a prostitute instead of seeking out other people or having an affair with someones wife. The Bible forbids prostitution and states that sexual immorality is sin . Fornication is also mentioned as being one of many forms of sexual immorality listed in 1 Corinthians 5:1-13a.
