How Many Names Are In The Bible

El Echad: The One God

Which Name of God Did Jesus Use? – Yahweh / Jehovah / Adonai

Malachi declared that God is the one God. Listen to Malachi 2:10: Have we not all one Father? Did not oneGod create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our fathers by breaking faith with one another? .

This is a declaration of monotheism, the belief in one God. This was very unique in the time of the ancient Jews because almost everybody was polytheistic. They believed in many gods and even accepted the gods of others as true gods. However, the God of the Bible claims to be the one God, the only God. In fact, this was the great schema or declaration of Israel. Listen to what Deuteronomy 6:4 says: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORDisone . To Israel, God was the one God and every other god was false.

Today, there is a similar attack on the monotheism of the Scripture and that is pluralism. People are proclaiming that there are many ways to God and some proclaim that the gods in all the different religions are the same god. However, Scripture clearly teaches that there is one God and that the only way to him is through Christ. Listen to what Jesus said, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me .

El Echad, the God of the Scripture is the one God. There are no other gods and there is only one way to God. The only way to have a relationship with the God of the Bible is through his Son, Jesus Christ.

Why Does God Have So Many Names

  • M.A., Christian Studies, Union University
  • B.A., English Literature, Wheaton College

Names have been a critical aspect of the human experience throughout historyno surprise there. Our names are one of the elements that define us as individuals, which is probably why we have so many of them. You have your first and last name, for example, but you probably also have a middle name and a few nicknames used by different friends and family members. You’re also connected to secondary names such as your job title, your relationship status , your education level, and more.

Again, names are importantand not just for people. As you read through the Bible, you’ll quickly discover that the Scriptures contain several different names for God. Some of these names or titles are evident in our English translations. Think of God being described as “Father,””Jesus,””the Lord,” and so on.

Yet many of God’s names are evident only in the original languages in which the Scriptures were written. These include names such as Elohim, Yahweh, Adonai, and more. In fact, there are literally dozens of different names used for God throughout the Scriptures.

The obvious question is: Why? Why does God have so many names? Let’s look at two primary explanations.

The Names Of God In The Old Testament

This is a list of Hebrew;names of God in the Old Testament. Remember that God is real and these names reveal who He wants to be for you and your beloved ones. He didnt only exist thousands of years ago, when these names were first revealed. He is just as present today, to show you who He is. He loves you with all His heart.

Yahweh Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

Yahweh Tsidkenu was the name given by God in the book of Jeremiah for the Messiah. It means The Lord Our Righteousness. The character of the Messiah that Israel was waiting for was righteousness. He would gather Israel from all the lands of the earth and he would rule over them. He would be a righteous shepherd and they would call him, The Lord Our Righteousness. Listen to what Jeremiah said:

The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. Jeremiah 23:5-6

Jesus, the Messiah, is the righteousness of the nation of Israel. He is the one that will eventually turn them from their sins and give them a new heart to follow him . However, this is what Christ has already done for us. Christ took our sins while on the cross and gave us his righteousness. Second Corinthians 5:21 says: God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

You dont have to go far in either the Hebrew Scriptures or the New Testament before you hit them those lists of unpronounceable names! The lists and genealogies in the Bible have been a source of much consternation as hapless readers struggle through exotic and multisyllabic Middle Eastern names in their Bible study groups. Do we really have to bother with these lists? Is it so bad to just skip them? They may be a tongue-twisting challenge, but there can be great benefits to studying the lists in the Bible. Quite often there are treasures buried in the driest, hardest places in Gods word, hidden for those who love the Bible enough to start digging. Purdue Researcher Verifies The Existence Of 53 People Mentioned In Hebrew Bible

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Lawrence Mykytiuk cannot document that everything in the Bible took place. What the Purdue University Libraries professor can do is show you that many of the people written about did, in fact, exist.

;While some would put their hand on the Bible and really mean it when they take an oath, a few revisionist academics would throw it out and say, Thats creative writing. I was looking for concrete, objective evidence outside of the Bible that would help build the case, said Mykytiuk, an associate professor of library science.

Mykytiuk has added three names to the previously published 50 Old Testament individuals in the Bible, beginning with King David, all of whom he says he has verified through his research. The three new people are Tattenai , a Persian governor during the time of Ezra ; and two high officials of Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II: Nergal-sharezer, called the samgar official, and Nebuzaradan, the chief of the guards. A YouTube video is available here.

Tattenai is mentioned in the fifth chapter of the book of Ezra. He also is mentioned outside of the Bible in a letter on a clay tablet from Persian King Darius I the Great, in the year 502 B.C.;

Mykytiuk has written about his latest findings in Biblical Archeology Review.

When verifying an individual, Mykytiuk goes through a painstaking three-step process:

The name of God

Simon the tanner ;was identified by what he did for a living. Another Simon in this same area could have been called Simon the fisherman or Simon the carpenter. Mathew the tax collector;;was also referred to in this way.

Sometimes a persons hometown, or where they lived, was added to the first name. Jesus of Nazareth ;and;Mary Magdalene ;are both examples of this. In Marys case it is believed she was from Magdala, which was a town located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Other times the name of a persons father would be used to help identify them. In the Old Testament we see this with Joshua son of Nun . I suppose fathers could have kept things interesting with this method if they wanted to name a son after themselves. Instead of Joshua Jr. as we would say in our day and time, it would have been Joshua son of Joshua.

Adonai: Lord Master Or Owner

Adonai is the third most used name of God in the Old Testament, and it is a plural noun similar to Elohim.11 Therefore, many scholars see this as another implication of the Trinity in the Old Testament. The name could be translated, Lord or Master. Listen to Psalm 8:1: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens .

O LORD, our Master how majestic is your name. This was a declaration that not only was Yahweh God, but he also was the master of all people. This is important to say for there are many who recognize the God of the Bible as God, but will not take him as Lord and Master of their lives. James confronted scattered Hebrew Christians about the impossibility of this type of faith being salvific. Listen to what he says in James 2:19: You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe thatand shudder.

James says it is possible to believe in God, be monotheistic, and yet not truly be saved. The demons have orthodox theology as well, but they do not have orthopraxythey do not submit to him as Lord and Master of their lives. They live a life of rebellion against his Lordship.

Christ proclaimed that if anybody was going to follow him as a disciple, they must make him the Lord of their lives. Listen to what he said in Luke 14:2627:

The Ultimate Name Of God: I Am

Names of Jesus

I AM that I AM You must say this to the Israelites, I AM has sent me to you.

God made it clear to Moses that He is eternally present. He has always been, He is now and He will always be. This name of God;also speaks about His eternal presence with His people. He is present to help us, comfort us, guide us, and so much more His presence never leaves you, and He will always be with you. That is the greatest comfort we can ever find, and we learn it from the very name of God: I AM.

God said, I make this covenant with you: I promise that you will be the ancestor of many nations. Your name will no longer be Abram, but Abraham, because I am making you the ancestor of many nations.

In Genesis 32:28, Jacob was renamed Israel:
