What Is The Unforgivable Sin In The Bible

Have I Committed The Unforgivable Sin

What exactly is the UNFORGIVABLE SIN in the BIBLE?

If you sincerely hate your past course of sin and truly want to change, then you have not committed the unforgivable sin. God can forgive even repeated relapses into the same sin as long as your heart has not permanently hardened against him.Isaiah 1:18.

Some people feel that they may have committed an unforgivable sin because they are troubled by nagging feelings of guilt. However, the Bible teaches that we cannot always trust our feelings. God has not authorized us to judge anyoneeven ourselves. He can forgive us even when our own heart still condemns us.1 John 3:19, 20.

Jesus Knew Their Thoughts

When Jesus spoke of blasphemy against the Spirit in Matthew 12:2232 and accused the Pharisees of committing this sin, he used a key phrase that adds insight into his meaning: “But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, ‘No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.’ Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, ‘Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart’ ” .

In verse 25, the passage says, Jesus knew their thoughts.

Jesus pronounced judgment on the Pharisees as committing the sin of blasphemy from his unique perspective of not only hearing their words butknowing their thoughtsas well. The Lord knew that as they witnessed the miracle of Jesus healing a blind, mute, demon-possessed man, theylike the others who saw it as wellwere sensing the quickening of the Holy Spirit within their hearts that this was indeed a true miracle of God. Nevertheless, the arrogance within their hearts was so great that they willfully rejected the hastening of the Spirit.

Because Jesus knew the hardened state of their hearts, he was moved to offer a warning to the Pharisees. He wanted them to know that if they willfully rejected the leading of the Holy Spirit, they would never receive Gods forgiveness, and with it, the salvation of God in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Has Compassion For Human Skepticism

3 Facts You Need to Know About the Unforgivable Sin ...

Chrysostom puts his thumb on the issue best.

It is odd that in this passage, Jesus essentially says: âItâs understandable that you would reject me, because I look like any other human being. But you donât have that same excuse when you reject the Spirit, who does not bear the distraction of having a human body.â

It certainly feels strange to us that Jesus would permit his own rejection. But he is making a very generous accommodation for human psychology. Humans are right to be skeptical of things that they donât understand. But the Spirit encounters us in a way that is identifiable as God himselfâit is the direct speaking of God to the human heart. Insofar as we are able to reject Godâs direct encounter with us, we are without hope of forgiveness.

But there is a more basic theological point here.

The more directly God encounters the individual, the more consciously they must reject God and the forgiveness he offers. In other words, what makes the unpardonable sin so unforgivable is that it is the explicit rejection of forgiveness itself. It is unpardonable to the degree that the free offer of pardon on Godâs part is itself insulted and rejected on its very premise on manâs part.

Blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

Its one of Jesuss most enigmatic, controversial, and haunting statements. In the last two millennia, many a tortured soul have wrestled over this warning. Have I committed the unforgivable sin? When I addressed my angry profanity to God, when I spoke rebelliously against him, did I commit unforgivable blasphemy? Or, perhaps more often, especially in todays epidemic of Internet porn, Could I really be saved if I keep returning to the same sin I have vowed so many times never to return to again?

Despite the enigma and controversy, we do have a simple pathway to clarity. Jesuss blasphemy against the Spirit statement only appears in the Synoptic Gospels . If we get a concrete sense of what he did mean there, then were positioned to answer what such unforgivable sin might mean for us today.

How Did The Pharisees Commit The Unpardonable Sin

This passage is the response from Jesus to the Pharisees accusation that He was casting out demons by the power of the ruler of demons. The Pharisees knew better and because they knew better they knew that they were blaspheming. They were more concerned about their own power and influence over people than they were about pleasing God.

This gives us our first clue about what Jesus was talking about here. People who are concerned that they have committed the unpardonable sin are worried that they did something that was displeasing to God. This indicates that they obviously have not committed that sin. The Holy Spirit is the one who convicts people of sin. If He had been blasphemed, then they would not be worried because they would not be convicted.

The second clue we get here is the fact that the Pharisees knew what they were doing. They knew that He was a teacher from God who was empowered by God.

John 3:1-2

3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.

The Unforgivable Sin Is Not About The Church Itself

This interpretation is more than a stretchâitâs simply not in the text.

Jesusâ emphasis is clearly on the individualâs relationship with God and His Spirit proper, and the notion that the church serves as the exclusive proxy for that relationship is not found anywhere in the text.

The church is necessary, important, and the proper place in which God desires to dispense salvation and its benefits to the world.

However, this text does not give individuals the ultimatum: âJoin the church or else you will burn in the fires of Hell.â While some theologians might strive to make this point, they will have to look elsewhere in Scripture, because such a notion is alien to the teaching of Jesus in any proximity to this text.

Rejection Of The Holy Spirit

Unforgivable Sin, Unforgivable Sin Today? | Bible Questions & Answers

In the Old Testament, Israel rejected God the Father. In the Gospel records, they rejected God the Son. In early Acts, Israel rejected God the Holy Spirit. By blaspheming the Spirit in deliberate rebellion, they completed their rejection of the Godhead in totality. The Holy Spirit was their last chance to repent, believe, and be saved. Thats why blaspheming the third Person of the Trinity was unforgivable.

The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost and then worked mightily in Israel with signs and wonders. Those signs and wonders, done in the name of Jesus Christ, confronted Israel and its leaders with overwhelming proof of Christs resurrection and Messiahship . Israels continued rejection of Christ was inexcusable in light of the Spirits ministry. Rather than heed the pleadings of the Spirit-filled apostles, the religious leaders ignored them and initiated a persecution against them in which they were threatened , imprisoned , and beaten .

Israels rejection of the Holy Spirit reached its zenith in Acts 7, when Stephen confronted their sin and unbelief. Stephen was a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost . He stood before the Sanhedrin, Israels ruling religious body, and challenged them about their willful rejection of Christ, their refusal to open their hearts, and their guilt of resisting the Holy Spirit:

The Unforgivable Sin Is Not A Thoughtless Mistake

Let me take a moment and say the unforgivable sin isnt something that someone commits randomly. The scribes who came from Jerusalem didnt just do this on a whim. If you follow the references to these scribes throughout the book of Mark youll see there is a progression to their unbelief. They were initially curious about Jesus and His ministry. Then they had questions. In time, they grew indifferent but then their indifference metastasized into a malicious attitude that became so hateful and vengeful that it ultimately nailed Jesus Christ to the cross.

Sin Against The Holy Spirit Unforgivable Sin In The Bible

Consequently, what is the unforgivable sin in the Bible? The reason blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is unforgivable is because its through the Holy Ghost that God communicates with us. Consider the words of Jesus, as He was nearing the final hours of His ministry.

Jesus knew the fate that awaited Him. Knowing He would be crucified subsequent day, Jesus made several promises to His disciples. Among them, what is the unforgivable sin in the Bible, were promises He made about the sin against the holy spirit.

the planet cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him: but you recognize Him, for He dwells with you and can be in you. John 14:16,17

These things I even have spoken while being present with you. However, the Secretary, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send My name, He will guide you all information, and communicate to your recognition all information that I spoke to you. John 14:25,26.

The blasphemy of the Pharisees proved that they might ultimately die without Christ and at some point, account that sin. At that moment, they had made their decision and sealed their fate.

Therefore what is the unforgivable sin in the Bible? There is just one sin that will send you to hell, which is the sin of living a life without accepting Christ.

Bible Verses About The Unforgivable Sin

Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit or the unpardonable sin was when the Pharisees who had clear proof that Jesus was God refused to acknowledge him as God. Even after reading about him, seeing him do miracles and fulfill biblical prophecies, hearing about him doing miracles, etc. they refused to acknowledge him as God and attributed everything he did to Satan accusing him of being demon-possessed. Although there are other types of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit this is the only unforgivable sin. Today the only thing you have to worry about is rejecting Christ.

If you die without repenting and believing on Jesus Christ you are guilty before a Holy and just God and you will feel Gods wrath in hell. You are a sinner in need of a Savior you are not worthy enough to get into Heaven by your own merits. You are so unrighteous before God. Your only hope is what the Lord Jesus Christ did for you on that cross. He died, he was buried, and he was resurrected. When you truly accept Christ you will have new desires and some slower than others, but you will begin to change and grow in grace. Dont commit the unforgivable sin, believe the gospel of Christ and you shall be saved.

Over the last 33 years, I have been a believer I have been asked on numerous occasions about whether or not it is possible to commit the unpardonable sin, also known as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. So when you understand the circumstances then you will understand that there really is no unpardonable sin in todays world except one and I will explain that to you at the end of this article.

What Does Falling Away Mean In The Bible

The second passage, Hebrews 6:4-6, is a powerful warning against abandoning the understanding of Gods Word, instruction and promises. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

This passage describes a person who had come to repentance, understood and accepted Gods forgiveness of sin through Jesus Christ, and received the gift of the Holy Spirit, but subsequently, knowingly and intentionally rejected Jesus. This is a person who, even though he knows Gods authority, has intentionally set his mind to reject the gift of Gods Holy Spirit and to reject the only One through whom repentance is possible.

Repentance means to seek Gods forgiveness for sin through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and to commit to a lifetime of obedience, forsaking a previous way of life. When we repent, we receive the gift of Gods Holy Spirit by which we have an understanding of Gods goodness and eternal promises.

The sin that cannot be forgiven is a sin of which a person does not want to repent. It is the act of rejecting the sacrifice of Christ and intentionally choosing sin over repentance, forgiveness and obedience.
