Faith Hope And Love In The Bible

FAITH HOPE AND LOVE Bible Verses

Let’s look at Bible verses that describe the meaning of faith, hope, and love:

Faith“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

Hope“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”

“For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

Love“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

“Jesus answered, The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

Three Things Remain: What Is Love

This is the final post in a three-part series entitled: Three Things Remain. The purpose of this series is to learn the meaning of the three greatest Christian virtues: faith, hope, and love.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

Love is one of the most commonly used words in the world its something everybody understands. Many songs, poems, stories have been written about love, and it is at the core of human existence.

But what is love? People flippantly use it to express their attachment to things or people. For example, loving your friends, your car, or your new haircut. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines love as strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. And the Oxford Dictionary defines love as an intense feeling of deep affection. .

However, love in the Bible is more than just feelings or emotions. Biblical love is an action based on choice. It may involve emotions, but acts always follow.

For further understanding of Biblical love, lets look at the original Hebrew and Greek words.

The Most Important Commandment Is To Love

Jesus answered, The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:14

Faith and hope both involve trust. They both hinge on the trustworthiness of the person or object of an individual’s core belief. When we drive a car, both are relevant we have faith the car will transport us safely to our destination and we also hope no one crashes into us .

At the moment of conversion, just about everything changes were still here on earth, but our worldview and reason for living are new . Its a hard road for us to get to the point of asking Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, but the moment of accepting Him is supernatural simplicity when the person praying is sincere. To pray to receive Jesus as Lord means acting in faith and with hope. We have faith He can save us, and we hope because of what He has done, is doing, and will do. The tandem nature of this is evident in Scripture .

With God, our faith and hope are in the only One we can trust for eternal life. And due to His perfect, loving nature, we love Him as our hope and faith increases.

What Does The Bible Say About Faith Hope And Love

Faith, Hope, Love | 1 Corinthians 13:13 [Daily Devotional]

The preeminent chapter which has the three together is 1 Corinthians 13. In this chapter, Paul continues his discourse from chapter 12, prioritizing the characteristics that should govern every Christians life. One may have various gifts, but if he does not have love, his gifts are mootmeaningless and unproductive . Love is the greatest gift, and chapter 13 is often called The Love Chapter. Many wedding vows contain the passage which includes verses 4-13. Verse 13 says, So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three but the greatest of these is love. To have them stated concurrently brings a greater emphasis on how they are to work together. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 adds to that by telling us to put on the breastplate of faith and love and the hope of salvation is our helmet.

Concluding Observations And Applications

Faith, hope and love occur together in many contexts as the following examples demonstrate. Thus the author of Hebrews points out that these three virtues can work together effectively saying,

Let us draw near with a sincere heart in the assurance that faith brings, because we have had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy. And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works.

His stress is on the importance of an active faith, which should undergird all of our doings even as he goes on to say, Faith is being sure of what we hope for being convinced of what we do not see. . Indeed, faith in Christs finished redemption should provide an impetus to hold fast to this assured hope regardless of lifes difficulties or opportunities . As Bruce expresses it, Our hope is based on the unfailing promise of God why should we not cherish it confidently and share it boldly?33 Both faith and hope should spur the believer on so as to be an example, encouragement, and support to an active life lived in Gods love. Moreover, believers should seek to love others even as God loves them. This is especially true for the believing community. As Hughes points out,

O love of God, how rich and pure! How marvelous and strong! It shall forevermore endurethe saints and angels song.38

A Prayer For Faith Hope And Love

We can start with this prayer from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4: All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

God, thank you for loving me. Thank you for starting my cycle of life and giving me the wisdom needed to walk with you. I pray that I will continually be interested in wisdom so that my hope cannot be cut off. I pray that as I stay full, I will look for ways to carry out your work to help someone else in need. Amen.

Why Faith Hope And Love Are So Important And Will Last Forever

In 1 Corinthians, Paul describes various spiritual gifts and ways we can demonstrate Godly living in the world. He touches on the gift of tongues, prophecy with understanding, and faith that could move mountains. Yet somehow, he passes all of these things for just one thing: Love. In 1 Corinthians 13:13 he says, Three things will last forever: faith, hope, and love-and the greatest of these is love. I have found myself skipping over this verse with a thought of Yep, got that one down. I have heard it and read it so often that I forget the application and power of it. What is this for? Why are these the things – faith, hope, love – that last forever? The greatest power of our lives is contained in this verse. We just have the task of unfolding the purpose behind it in order to connect to it.

Why Are Faith Hope And Love Connected Together

Faith Hope Love Lavender Sachet 1 Corinthians 13 Bible Verse

When a sinner is saved , faith, hope, and love are involved, with faith and hope being a simultaneous work in the sinners heart.

What happens when someone decides to say, yes, to Gods kind invitation to become His ? We trust He has been at work in the sinners heart because it is the Father Who draws men to the Lord Jesus . Since God loves us, He sent Jesus to save us from our sins , and we love Him with reason we love because He first loved us . When a sinner is saved , faith, hope, and love are involved, with faith and hope being a simultaneous work in the sinners heart. At true conversion, a person makes a 180 degree turn from a willful, sinful life. This does not mean people will never sin , but it does mean they do their utmost to obey and follow Jesus and the Holy Spirit, who now indwells them.

Bible Verses About Hope

At Finally Family Homes were all about encouraging others in hope. For kids who are aging out of foster care, life can look hopeless. After a traumatic childhood, they are looking at a future without a forever family and where the odds are stacked against them. But many of those who have risen to have happy successful lives say that having hope and faith was essential to their success.

As John Maxwell put it, Where there is no hope in the future, there is no power in the present. It is those who were able to find hope for the future that had the strength and empowerment to succeed in the present.

So lets look into what can bring hope, so that you too, can tap into the power and strength that hope provides in the present.

How The Bible Defines Hope

What is hope? Hope is defined as a feeling, desire, or wish for something to happen. It has an element of trust. Hope is uncertain by the worlds definition.

The Bible defines hope differently.

Biblical Hope is forward-looking faith. It is a confident belief, based not on things experienced, but on the word of God that the future He says will happen. Hope is a future certainty that gives you joy, peace, and patience in the present. Thats what the following hope Bible verses.

The Greatness Of These Is Love

The Bible states that love is greater than both faith and hope. We couldn’t live our lives without faith or hope: without faith, we cannot know the God of love without hope, we would not endure in our faith until we meet him face to face. But in spite of the importance of faith and hope, love is even more crucial.

Why is love the greatest?

Because without love, the Bible teaches there can be no redemption. In Scripture we learn that God is love and that he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us a supreme act of sacrificial love. Love is what motivated God the Father to send His only Son to die for us. Thus, love is the virtue upon which all Christian faith and hope now stand.

For the believer, love is the foundation for every good thing in our lives. Without love, nothing else matters.

The High Value Of Hope

Faith, Hope, Love | 1 Corinthians 13:13 | One Verse Daily Devotional

The psalmist builds upon the theme of hope in God in a series of refrains in the psalm that appears in the collection of psalms known as Psalms 42 and 43. Thus he says,

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why are you disturbed within me?Put your hope in God,for I will yet praise Him,my Savior and my God. .

This psalm is often understood as a prayer psalm and to be sure, it does praise God. Yet, it also contains the distinctive features of a worship psalm. Thus the psalmist expresses a strong longing for God as well as the psalmists fond remembrance of his own past ministry for the Lord . This longing also features the psalmists lament as he deplores his present condition even though he remains certain that God is available to him:

Accordingly, he goes on to pray to the Available One for vindication and restoration to his former status .

Indeed, the believers very hope is based upon his salvation. It is a salvation that comes via the grace of God . The Lord has granted salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ:

We must stay sober of faith and love and as a helmet our hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that whether we are alert or asleep we will come to life together with him. .

It is a glorious salvation that has brought the believer into an eternal living union with Jesus Christ, one that may be described as Christ in you, the hope of glory . As we have noted elsewhere,
