What Does Righteousness Mean In The Bible

What Are The Characteristics Of A Righteous Person

What Does Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness Mean? (Matthew 5:6)

Looking at verses 1-3 we can learn 10 things about the righteous man.

  • He is happy.
  • He does not walk in the counsel of the wicked.
  • He does not stand in the path of sinners.
  • He does not sit in the seat of scoffers.
  • His delight is in the law of the Lord.
  • He meditates day and night in Gods law.

Gods Righteousness And The Nation Israel

Gods righteousness was to be seen in His every dealing with the nation Israel:

6 Then Samuel said to the people, It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. 7 So now, take your stand, that I may plead with you before the LORD concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD which He did for you and your fathers .

Gods righteousness in His dealings with the nation Israel has various manifestations.

God reveals His righteousness by revealing His will and His word to the world through the nation Israel.

5 See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it. 6 So keep and do , for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him? 8 Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today? .

God deals with men on the basis of what He has revealed to them. He often tells men what He will do well in advance of the event so they will know God is God and that He has accomplished what He promised:

God reveals His righteousness by instructing men in His word.

God reveals His righteousness by fulfilling His promises.

  • Deodatta V. Shenai-Khatkhate:

Tolerance is prerogative of humanity. In my view, when we think that ours is the only true path to righteousness, we inadvertently force ourselves to judging others with our own yardstick, and walking in the territory of arrogance. Interestingly, the roads that lead to righteousness and arrogance though seem to run in parallel, may intersect each other at several points in our lives. We cannot differentiate between these two roads easily, unless we understand that the road to righteousness is paved with the love of humanity, while the road to arrogance is paved with the love of self. Being tolerant to various beliefs, colors, cultures, races, genders, sexual orientations, and ethnicities etc has become extremely important in the world filled with discrimination, prejudice, and supremacy etc. As the French Philosopher Voltaire said it correctly “La tolérance, c’est l’apanage de l’humanité” – i.e. Tolerance is prerogative of humanity. We believe that Tolerance will surely make our world a better place.

    What Does Righteousness Mean?

The apostle Paul makes another comparison between the Christian life and warfare in one of his letters to the Corinthians: For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ .

The enemies of the Christian described in these verses are numerous, and could come at us unexpectedly. Paul lists arguments, every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and the need for bringing every thought into captivity. These are things we can encounter in everyday life. The breastplate of righteousness is one of our primary defenses against these unexpected and dangerous intrusions.

How important is the breastplate of righteousness? God promises great rewards to those who follow the path of righteousness: Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright, but the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright will deliver them, but the unfaithful will be caught by their lust .

The Righteousness Of Man Vs God

Christianity.com presented an insightful take on righteousness in the Bible. Phillip Wijaya, the author, wrote that because we live in a world in which people tend to think their ways are right in their own eyes, it is hard for many to accept the absolute standard of righteousness.

The truth becomes relative, and people are capable of doing whatever they feel is right. In this article, it was explained why the Bible’s view of righteousness stands out among the thoughts and ideals of this world.

According to human standards, righteousness is being morally right or fair. Compliance with the regulation is the basis for justification.

Essentially, righteousness is being right with God in all aspects, including character, conscience, conduct, and word. God is the ultimate Lawgiver, so righteousness depends upon His standard . Find out more in this article about what righteousness means for Christians today.

Did you know that Righteousness is mentioned over five hundred times in the Bible?

Righteousness in the Bible can feel abstract and hard to grasp. Its not as popular as Biblical concepts such as love and hope, so it might be tempting to give it a glance and then move on with a polite nod. But its just as important as the words were more comfortable with.

Theres a saying I grew up hearing that goes, If the Bible says it once, pay attention. If it says it more than once, pay even more attention. With so many Biblical mentions of righteousness, its an essential concept to learn more about.

  • What Does The Bible Say About Us And Righteousness

    Biblical Definition of Righteousness

All of us are born into complete bondage to sin, unable to produce any sort of righteousness on our own . As a matter of fact, Isaiah says that our attempts to produce righteousness on our own are disgusting in the eyes of God. We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

Even when our good deeds seems to be performed from the purest of motives, unless that motivation is to glorify the name of Jesus, those deeds are completely self-righteous and sinful. For instance, modifying my behavior to stop using certain language was actually a self-righteous act because the real motivation wasnt out of conviction from the Holy Spirit, but to simply appear more holy to others.

Over time, I realized that I needed to repent and lay all of this at the feet of Jesus. I am completely incapable of changing my own heart. Only He can do that. When we stop trying to produce righteousness and begin to simply trust in the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, He will make us righteous.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

How Does The Bible Define Righteousness

During a time when surfer lingo was popular , the word righteous was often used to indicate approval or something good. For example, if someone surfed a big powerful wave all the way to the shore, their extremely difficult ride might have been described as gnarly in practice, but righteous in overall approval. Other than Jesus walking on water, you will not find anything close to surfing in the Bible. However, if you take a moment to learn how does the Bible define righteousness, you will find that it is much easier than riding a big wave.

The Righteousness Of God Vs The Righteousness Of Man

What we as humans might consider to be righteous doesnt always line up with what God calls righteous.

Before he wrote about the armor of God, before he became a follower of Jesus Christ, Paul was a Pharisee.

The Pharisees were Jews who placed a heavy emphasis on obeying more than just Gods commandmentsthey obeyed an extra set of man-made commandments on top of Gods commandments. They believed their obedience to these extra commandments would keep them far from sin .

Years after his conversion, Paul wrote that his goal was to gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith .

Paul was referring to Gods law, not the man-made pharisaical laws. And though Gods laws define conduct that is righteous, even if we could keep those laws perfectly , we still need the cleansing of past sins that only comes through faith in Christs redeeming death.

After Paul explained how Abrahams faith was accounted to him for righteousness, he explained, Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification .

What Is Righteousness In The New Testament

Acts 10:35 tells us that whoever fears God and works righteousness will be accepted by God.

This verse does a pretty good job of spelling out the definition of the Greek word that is translated as righteousness. In the New Testament, righteousness carries an indication of being acceptable to God.

Does this mean that the righteousness of the New Testament is different from the righteousness of the Old Testament? Not at all. In fact, the righteousness of the New Testament has deep roots in the Old Testament.

The very first time the Bible uses the word righteousness is in Genesis 15:6. The verse doesnt talk about the Ten Commandments or the law. Instead, we learn that Abraham believed the promise God made, and God counted his belief as righteousness.

You see, righteousness doesnt start with being right or doing right. Winning people over to your point-of-view wont make you righteous. Neither will going to church or refraining from telling a lie.

Depending on our own abilities and understanding is self-righteousness, and it crumbles to ash when compared to the righteousness of God.

True righteousness begins with believing that God is who He says.

How does believing God lead to being acceptable to Him?

There is only one person who ever earned Gods full stamp of approval. When Jesus began His earthly ministry, the Father spoke from heaven to declare to the world, This is my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

What Is The Difference Between Truth And Righteousness

Righteousness and truth are closely related concepts. They are used side-by-side in sixteen different verses. But they are not the same thing.

Truth means conformity to fact or reality. It has to do with the trustworthiness of information.

Righteousness indicates conformity of the heart to the law of God.

Proverbs 12:17 says that he who speaks truth shows forth righteousness.

Speaking the truth will declare righteousness , because God created our world and defined the laws that govern it.

The armor of God includes the breastplate of righteousness and the belt of truth. The breastplate protects the bulk of the body, including the heart.

1 Cor 1:30 says that we are of God because Christ Jesus has been made our righteousness.

Putting on the breastplate of righteousness is a call to put on Christ. To both lose and gain our identity in Him. To become acceptable to God. To come under His protection in this life and the next.

The belt of truth, on the other hand, is said to gird up the loins.

Everyone at that time wore robes and tunics. If youve ever complained about not being able to do something because of wearing a dress, you should be able to sympathize with the difficulty of such a garment. Girding up ones loins was a process of gathering the loose fabric and essentially turning it into a pair of shorts by tucking the loose ends into the belt. This would let the person move without tripping.

What We Are And What We Become

So one way to distinguish between being righteous and being holy is to say that we are righteous, and are becoming holy. We are righteous through faith in Christ, and we are becoming holy as we grow in faith in Christ. We have been declared righteous because of something that happened outside us: Christ died for our sins. This is Gods work for us. We are not contributing anything to that. We just receive Gods blessing of righteousness when we believe. We are becoming holy because something is happening in us: we are becoming more and more like Christ. This is the work of God in us. It is still Gods work, but we are fully involved, we are living it out.

    The Judgment Seat Of Christ

Ask Laurie: Session 1 — What does righteousness mean?

All Christians will stand before Jesus at His judgment seat:

1 Cor 3:13-15 Every mans work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire and the fire shall try every mans work of what sort it is. If any mans work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any mans work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved yet so as by fire.

Our works will be judged and rewards given. However, the crown of righteousness is not a crown based on our works, but on Jesus work for us. Therefore, every Christian will receive the crown of righteousness for Paul said the crown would be given to all who love His appearing. The Lords appearing will be at the Rapture, and all who are Christs will certainly rejoice in His coming. It will be a day of a journey to Heaven, a bodily resurrection for all who died in Christ, and a body and soul resurrection for those still alive in Christ at His coming.

1 Th 4:16-17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

1 Cor 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

    What Is A Breastplate

The apostle Paul listed several pieces of armor worn by the Roman soldiers of his day and made an analogy about the spiritual armor needed by Christians. The second piece of armor, the breastplate, is likened to righteousness: Having put on the breastplate of righteousness .

Soldiers of that time had another piece of protective armor to ward off enemy blowsthe shield. But during the heat of battle, those blows could come from unexpected directions, or there could be too many to ward off with just a shield. The breastplate provided protection against the unexpected and against overwhelming numbers.

The breastplate worn by Roman soldiers was generally made of iron, though some wealthier soldiers may have worn a bronze breastplate.

It consisted of overlapping pieces of metal with connecting front and back sections. There were rounded pieces protecting the shoulders and the breastplate usually rested on the soldiers hips so the entire weight wasnt carried on the shoulders.

The overlapping pieces allowed for more flexibility of movement. This piece of armor protected the vital organs of the soldier during battle.

Adam Clarkes Commentary says the following: As the breast-plate defends the heart and lungs, and all those vital functionaries that are contained in what is called the region of the thorax so this righteousness defends everything on which the mans spiritual existence depends.
