However long it is until the actual end of the age, one theme the biblical writers emphasized is that it draws nearer every day. Paul warns us that “now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed” .
And salvation is certainly important to keep in mind as everything falls to pieces around us. The end of the world as we know it, though it includes many catastrophes on a scale never seen in history, is not all bad news for mankind. It includes good news too. God will intervene before it is too late . The alternative is not only the destruction of human civilization but the annihilation of the human race itself.
The only wise action for anyone who understands what is coming is to turn to God with repentance and obedience .
When Jesus comes in power and glory, He will rebuke the world for its sins. This is part of the message proclaimed from the beginning of the true Christian Church. On the day of the Church’s founding, the apostle Peter exhorted his audience, “Be saved from this perverse generation” .
This is the message the Church is still commissioned to proclaim. How were the people to be saved? Peter urged them to repentto turn from their own sinful, selfish ways and to seek God’s waysand to be baptized . At His second coming Christ will reward those who do so.

Once before, humanity as a whole approached the level of depravity we face today, and in love our Creator put most of humanity out of its misery in the Flood. This time, humanitys death spiral into sin will be stopped by the return of Christ.

The Bible, in a move worthy of a secretive government agency, neither confirms nor denies that 2012 will usher in the end of the world. The scriptures certainly contain passages that prophesy the end, but whether they are true predictions of a physical cataclysm or literary devices used for emphasis is anybody’s guess. Plenty of preachers have claimed the prophecies are literal, but so far, all interpretations of the Bible that predicted of the world ending on a specific date have proven inaccurate.
Speculation about 2012 as the date of the end started with study and interpretation of the Mayan calendar. The complex Mayan civilization flourished in Mexico and Guatemala beginning around A.D. 250. Experts are still uncertain why their civilization suddenly collapsed around 900. The Mayans were accomplished mathematicians and astronomers, and they devised a calendar that divided time into cycles called baktuns. The final cycle was to end on the winter solstice, December 21, 2012 .
Some think this abrupt end to the calendar hints at the end of the world. Other interpreters foresee an occasion of spiritual rebirth. Current Mayan shamans reportedly view the occasion not as an approaching calamity but as the beginning of a new age .
Many religions include prophesies about an end to mankind, and some Christian preachers and Bible readers believe 2012 is indeed the end of the world as set forth in the scripture.

Every year, new apocalyptic predictions waft through the dark fringes of the internet and the tabloid media. In the past couple of years, the world was predicted to end in a nuclear war, an asteroid impact, and a new ice age, to name just a few of the more popular doomsday prophecies.
Needless to say that none of them have come true. Most of us will agree that 2020 was anything but a pleasant year, but, the good news is, humankind is still around, and thriving!
And yet, there is no shortage of fresh end-of-world prophecies for the coming year. The following 2021 predictions are now particularly trendy among doomsday enthusiasts:
Potential Devastation From The Sky
Although some of these possibilities are unlikely, others present a real threat. Based on the increasing number of gigantic impact craters discovered in recent years, scientists believe that a collision between earth and a killer asteroid is inevitable.
What would be the result of such a violent encounter? “An asteroid only a kilometer across would create cosmic havoc by impacting on the earth,” writes Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at City College of New York. “. . . The shock wave would flatten much of the United States. If it hit the oceans, the tidal wave it created could be a mile high, enough to flood most coastal cities on earth” .
In 1908 a meteor or comet exploded over a remote area of Siberia. Though it was relatively small, with an estimated diameter of only about 50 yards, it flattened 1,000 square miles of forest, felling 80 million trees. The energy released by that celestial missile is estimated to be about equal to that of a large hydrogen bomb. The resulting tremors were recorded as far away as London.

Why Invoking Doomsday Scenarios Can Be Harmful
Invoking end-times biblical passages may actually bolster some peoples faith by giving meaning to events that seem cruel and arbitrary.
But people who invoke the terrifying imagery of Revelation in connection with COVID-19 can do more than get scripture wrong. They can damage others psychological health, Beal says.
I had one student who was reading Revelation outside on the waterfront and she fell asleep and woke up in the middle of a thunderstorm. She had an absolute panic attack because she felt like she was in the book, says Beal, a religion professor at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio.
Doomsday predictions from the Bible can also lead to another danger doing nothing, Beal says. He believes people who are seized with panic over something like Covid-19 may ignore other chronic issues threatening humanitys survival, such as climate change.
It can lead to a call to inaction, Beal says about misinterpretations of Revelation. That is to say, people will say this is all happening because of Gods plan and its going to get worse before it gets better so theres nothing we can do about it because its Gods will.
But that probably wont stop people from invoking Revelation when a pandemic hits. For centuries its been the go-to book for doomsday prophets warning about the spread of end-times plagues and bizarre weather patterns.
The book of Revelation is not a book about predictions but a book of consolation, Lehner says.
Camping And The Rapture
The world was also supposed to end on October 21, 2011. American radio host Harold Camping had arrived at the date for the apocalypse through a series of calculations that he claimed were based on Jewish feast days and the lunar calendar. In addition to his claims about the end of the world, he also predicted that on May 21, 2011, at precisely 6:00 p.m., God’s elect people would be assumed into heaven, in an event he called the Rapture. Those who were not raptured, he said, would have to remain on Earth to wait for their doom five months later. According to media reports, some of his followers quit their jobs, sold their homes, and invested large amounts of money in publicizing Camping’s predictions. When the Rapture did not occur, Camping re-evaluated his predictions saying that the event would take place simultaneously with the end of the world. After October 21, 2011, the self-proclaimed prophet stated that nobody could know exactly when the time of the apocalypse would come.

The Increasing Nuclear Threat
Experts generally agree that, of all possible means of destroying humanity, nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat.
And the genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Austrian theologian Ulrich Kortner put it this way: “The nuclear threat . . . constitutes not a temporary, but rather an irrevocable global threat. The actual possibility of an end to all life is now a constituent part of our reality” .
Some sober scientists go even farther, saying that nuclear annihilation is inevitable. The late Carl Sagan, perhaps the world’s best-known scientist before his death in 1996, wrote that “the development of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems will, sooner or later, lead to global disaster” .
With the Cold War ended, the probability of all-out nuclear war between countries has lessened for the time being, but the continuing addition of more nations to the nuclear club ratchets the threat back upward.
