Avoid Positions That Cause Pride

If taking on a certain responsibility or position will cause you to be living in pride, it is best to avoid that position.

Paul says that even the office of an overseer cannot be held by a new convert or he might become conceited and incur the same condemnation as the devil, . Obviously, avoiding conceit is a valid reason to not accept a position.

Everyone deals with pride in some way. Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that if there is pride in your heart at all, you shouldnt be a pastor, manager, or leader. But, you cannot be living in this sin and holding one of those offices.

In his book The Soul;Winner,;Charles Spurgeon pointed out that Humility is one of the chief qualifications for usefulness. This is an incontrovertible truth of ministry.

Examples & Stories Of Pride In The Bible

There are many examples throughout the Bible of people who struggled with pride. Here are a few that stand out.

Ananias and Sapphira They were so desirous for others within the church to think highly of their generosity, that they lied about how much they gave to the Lord. As retribution, they were struck dead for their lie and sin of pride.

David & Bathsheba Davids pride in not revealing his sin with Bathsheba drove him to have Uriah, her husband, killed. This led to many consequences and ultimately the death of their child.

Eve The very first sin in the Bible had its roots in pride. Satan told Eve if she ate of the forbidden fruit, she would be like God: For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil . Her puffed up vision of herself and unwillingness to submit to Gods authority was the cause of sins destruction.

Tower of Babel In one of earths first civilizations, the people tried to come together and build a tower reaching the heavens so that we may make a name;for ourselves. God thwarted their plans, confused their languages, and let them know Who was really in control.

Why Is Pride The Worst Sin

Pride, envy, anger, lust, greed, gluttony, and sloth are called the Deadly Sins because they are the chiefs, the parents from which all other sins spring. It is The Great Sin that leads to all other sins, because pride is the exaltation of Self above all authority, even Gods authority. Pride is cosmic arrogance.

The Lord Has Supreme Authority Over Everyone

Consider Others More Important

This is the command that Paul gave in Philippians 2, Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.

No one is more valuable than anyone else. You dont deserve more grace than someone else. That is contradictory to the nature of grace; it is a gift that is given to those who dont deserve it.

How often do you go out of your way to serve your brothers and sisters? Do you carry one anothers burdens?

God Will Always Be Infinitely Superior To Men

Job 25:46 ESV: How then can man be in the right before God? How can he who is born of woman be pure? Behold, even the moon is not bright, and the stars are not pure in his eyes; how much less man, who is a maggot, and the son of man, who is a worm!

The Creator is perfect in every possible way, while we are likened to maggots.

Indeed, none of us is pure as we all inherit sin at birth.

Knowing this, how can you continue to be prideful about yourself?

Causes Of Pride: How To Be More Humble

  • Pin35

Pride is rooted in deep insecurity, fear, and unworthiness. Prideful people often feel small, overlooked, insecure, powerless, and unloved. To hide those feelings from the world a prideful person puts on a false mask of perfection, confidence, and engages in attention seeking behaviors.

If you find that you are prideful there is no reason to be afraid. The truth is, a prideful person doesnt know how powerful, amazing, and loving they are. You wouldnt have to pretend if you truly tapped into your inner power. If you fix the underlying insecurities, and fears then it fixes the pride, which will allow you to be more humble.

Identify Lies Youre Believing

If the truth was known and believed, pride would not exist. Your pride comes from lies that you are believing. Our adversary is a liar, and the father of lies.

His first strategy is to get you believing something that is not true. Once you identify lies, you can replace them with the truth.

Here are some lies that can lead to pride:

  • God isnt concerned with what I do.
  • I know whats best for me better than God does.
  • Fruit in my life is from my own labor.
  • My sin is not that serious.
  • My comfort is more important than others.
  • Im more deserving of grace than someone else.
  • Im humble enough.

Gods truth gives a sharp contrast to these lies. For answers to these lies, keep reading.

How Humility Happens To Hard People

They say that pride is the last thing to leave before a lot of people come to Christ. Theyre tired of trying to fight it on their own and when theyve tried everything else and have been humbled, then they turn to God. They say, God, Ive got a problem with pride and Im asking that YOU wage war on it. Ill stand aside. Please fight it for me. Until a person gets to that point and is serious, Lifes not going to be easy. It usually takes losing a spouse, the kids, a job or a few nights in the car before someone raises their hand and says, Hi, my name is Ronald McDonald and Im a pride-a-holic and I need help.;

Self-Centered Churches and Man Boobs

I was listening to a non faith based marriage book the other day and the author said that Narcissism and Grandiosity are a huge problem in America. A lot of it started in the early 1970s when personal trainers and tons of self help books became super common.; You can do it. Youve got what it takes. You are worth it. There are no losers. We dont keep score. We dont give grades. Everybody wins and everybody passes.;

So if God is not very much the focus of our teachings nor our worship, then it makes sense that 85% of youth who grow up in church, stop going to church when they leave home. Because they dont know very well what God is like, they dont really like him that much. If they knew the God that I know, they would want 10 of him in their lives.;

Breaking The Spirit Of Pride Is Worth It

This bears repeating: breaking the spirit of pride is not easy, but it is so worth it. It is incredibly hard because our pride does not want to be broken, and we dont want it broken. But breaking pride is the thing that will bring us closer to God. We cannot come near Him if we cant learn from Him or listen to Him. He will come near to us as we draw near to Him

Scripture To Help Us Keep Our Pride In Check

Is LGBT a Sin?

We would do well to check our spirits when it comes to pride. While God opposes the proud, he gives immense grace to the humble. Humility comes when we internalize the truth that nothing in the life of a Christian is to be about us.

It is all about Jesus Christ and Him only. Here are four reminders to help you eliminate pride:

1.;But he gives more grace. Therefore, it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble;.

2.;Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud;.

3.;For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted;.

4.;And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that He may lift you up at the proper time, casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you;.

Realize Whose Approval Really Matters

At the end of the day, other people having a high opinion of you doesnt matter one bit. Why?

Because as Gods child, you are already approved. GOD HIMSELF is proud of you. What else matters?

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9

Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:7

Not Genuinely Interested In Other People

  • They dont ask questions to learn about people because they arent interested in other people more than theyre interested in their own SELF. So why would they want to know how many kids a person has, if their parents are still alive, what parts of work they enjoy or their favorite past times?;
  • Dominate conversations with talk of themselves or about the subject at hand to impress you so you think theyre smart.
  • Though credentials and titles are sometimes necessary to establish authority so theyll listen to or negotiate with you, prideful people insist on a lofty title or talk a lot about their credentials so that others will be more impressed and think more highly of them.;

Take Credit For Things

  • Prideful people lie to take credit for things they didnt do.;
  • Prideful people dont give compliments or credit to people who deserve it because they think it makes them look bad in contrast.
  • Dont like to share praise with others
  • Prideful people dont need to pray because that would mean God did it and they wouldnt get credit for it.;
  • Prideful people shoot down other peoples good ideas because it wasnt their own and even condition others to eventually stop sharing ideas. They make fun of them or roll their eyes or tell them that they are not wise for saying that.

How Extreme Pride Slips In

The Sin of Pride According to the Bible

Particularly for public figures like pastors, CEOs, singers, athletes, actors and actresses, pride slips in subtly and undetected. And after several years of being innocently complimented and praised, we start believing things about our SELF that are over-inflated above what is actually true. And that view of our SELF begins to feel actual and normal. And then we say and do things so that others think as highly about us as we do. And we do that because we deeply believe that how highly we think about our SELF is accurate and true. We start thinking more about our own SELF than the SELFs of others around us. Did you know that the career with the highest;rate of adultery is a;pastor.;
