Context Of 1 Corinthians 13

Christian Bible Verses for Love #shorts (Love is Patient, Love is Kind) 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 esv

Its important to look at the context of these verses on love. A major theme of this letter Paul writes to the church at Corinth is unity. There are tons of problems happening within the church due to divisive spirits and selfish attitudes.

Basically, Christians acting in an un-loving manner toward each other.

Pauls heart is that, there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought .

And oh, how we Christians struggle with this concept today. Fights, drama, disagreements they are a lot more frequent than wed like to admit.

But at our core, I think each of us knows we are made to be loving. Thats why the outcry is so strong when we hear of any violent act in our world we know it goes against our very nature.

But what about the small things in everyday life that tempt me to have an un-loving spirit? Why do I struggle to show love in these moments?

Im super excited about this post, because Ive asked Richard, my Greek-scholar husband to break down the original meanings of the words patient and kind in this verse. This will give us a deeper meaning of what it truly means to love like the Father.

Look Here How These Bible Verses About Love Relate To Motherhood:

Love is patient, even if you have had to repeat yourself several times and the kids still seem not to hear you.;Love graciously gives another chance, even when several chances have been given.

Love is kind, even if youre angry at what the kids are doing and want to yell.;Love holds in any spitefulness and waits until it is cooled down to speak again, even when it is so hard to do so.;Love offers a helping hand when someone is in need and speaks kindly even to those who arent showing kindness themselves.

Love doesnt want what it cant or shouldnt;have, but is grateful for what it does have: a home, kids, a job, a family, food, life.;Love doesnt seek out anything that will have a negative effect on the life of others but only seeks out what will benefit the family as a whole.

Love doesnt brag;about what you or your kids do have, making others feel poorly about their families.;Love shares the good things in life with those that dont have any.

Through A Glass Darkly

âLove Is Patient, Love Is Kindâ? Bible Verse Analysis ...

1 Corinthians 13:12 contains the phrase ‘ , which was translated in the 1560 Geneva Bible as “For now we see through a glass darkly” , which wording was used in the 1611 KJV, which added a comma before “darkly”. This passage has inspired the titles of many works, with and without the comma.

The Greek word: esoptrou , here translated “glass”, is ambiguous, possibly referring to a mirror or a lens. Influenced by Strong’s Concordance, many modern translations conclude that this word refers specifically to a mirror. Example English-language translations include:

  • Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror
  • What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror

Paul’s usage is in keeping with rabbinic use of the term , a borrowing from the Latin specularia. This has the same ambiguous meaning, although Adam Clarke concluded that it was a reference to specularibus lapidibus, clear polished stones used as lenses or windows. One way to preserve this ambiguity is to use the English cognate, speculum. Rabbi Judah ben Ilai was quoted as saying “All the prophets had a vision of God as He appeared through nine specula” while “Moses saw God through one speculum.” The Babylonian Talmud states similarly “All the prophets gazed through a speculum that does not shine, while Moses our teacher gazed through a speculum that shines.”

The Bible verse Love is Patient Love is kind is found in 1 Corinthians 13:48 :4;Love is patient,;love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.;5;It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,;it is not easily angered,;it keeps no record of wrongs.;6;Love does not delight in evil;but rejoices with the truth.;7;It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.8;Love never fails. Love Does Not Delight In Evil

In verse five, the KJV says that love thinketh no evil. The NIV, instead, says that love keeps no record of wrongs. Perhaps back when the KJV came out, to think evil was a colloquial expression meaning to keep record of wrongs. I dont know; I wasnt alive then. But to the contemporary mind, to think evil could mean a lot more than merely holding a grudge. When one plans to rob a bank, they might be said to be thinking eviland this has nothing to do with keeping record of wrongs.

So which translation is more true to the original Greek? I have to cast my vote for the NIV. The Greek says, . Literally, this means, does not take account of/reckon/calculate the bad.” Dont be thrown off by the use of the definite article the before bad.” The Greek use of a definite article often carries far less specificity than in English. Usually, when the New Testament refers to God in Greek, it literally says, the God,” although it is referring to the only God there is. In English, we might refer to Truth as a sort of abstract ideal or good. For example, we might say, That man is a lover of Truth.” Greeks, trying to say the same thing, would not omit the definite article the before truth,” even if they are referring to an abstract ideal.

Love Rejoices In The Truth Not In Evil

Aside from love, truth is one of the top virtues to strive for in the Christian life. Sadly, so many today are more concerned about personal comfort than a pursuit of truth, no matter the cost.

When you truly love someone, you love them enough to tell them the truth . Real love can never be happy about evil actions . Love tells the truth, at all times. Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth .

Biblical love is not just a good feeling. It’s hope, peace, satisfaction, healing, and so much more.

  • It cast out fear:There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 1 John 4:18 ESV;
  • It covers our sin:Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 ESV;
  • It brings unity:And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:14 ESV
  • Nothing in this entire world compares to the love that we have in our Heavenly Father.

    Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.; Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 ESV

    Love In Every Sense Of The Word

    The word translated love is , which in the New Testament documents seems to refer to a particularly powerful love which leads to actions and sacrifice on the behalf of others. Sadly, I have heard certain Christians try to relegate the meaning of this word to having an action only sort of connotation, removing feelings from it entirely. Ive heard this done in an attempt to explain how we can possibly love our enemies, as the New Testament enjoins us to. This is a terrible mistake.

    The word agape comes from a verb which, when directed towards humans, absolutely carries a sense of strong emotion and affection. It can even be translated as to caress. When we are told to love our enemies, it does not mean that we are to do good to them out of a mere sense of moral obligation. Indeed, we are to love them in every deep sense of that word, heart, mind, and soul. If one feels unable to perform such a feat, the only suggestion I may offer is that one seek God, who is the source of such love.

    Love Is Patient Love Is Kind Bible Verse

    Lets look at the Bibles most popular passage about love:

    Love is patient,;love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.;It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,;it is not easily angered,;it keeps no record of wrongs.;Love does not delight in evil;but rejoices with the truth.;It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

    1 Corinthians 13:4-8

    Or, you might be more familiar with the KJV version of these verses:

    Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

    Love Is Not Easily Angered And Keeps No Record Of Wrongs

    To my shame, there have been plenty of times Ive allowed anger to overtake me. This often tempts me to bring up the past mistakes of others.

    True love gives others the benefit of the doubt and realizes that there is usually a reason for offenses when they happen. Love tries to see life from the other persons perspective and not jump to conclusions too quickly.

    I love James 1:19-20, My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,;because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

    So What About You Who Are You Struggling To Be Patient And Kind With

    Love is Patient Bible Verse
    • Is a friend or acquaintance treating you badly? Take their past circumstances into account. Past wounds often translate into poor behavior patterns later.
    • Has your spouse had a long day or is their response out of the ordinary? You can show mercy by patiently asking, Is everything okay? How did your day go?;
    • Does the person you are struggling with have any stressors in their life? Maybe there are issues of health problems, finance, work, and life that are causing them to act un-lovingly.

    This makes me think of the following verses:

    Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.;

    Romans 12:14, 17-21

    Now that weve looked in-depth at the love is patient, love is kind portion, lets examine the other characteristics of love found in 1 Corinthians 13. Each of these facets upholds our ability to be patient and kind in any given situation.

    What Does ‘love Is Patient Love Is Kind’ Look Like

    We can now begin tackling what exactly Paul is getting at in 1 Corinthians 13. Paul is writing about the way Christians live in the world. He is not speaking about the romance of two lovebirds but of the witness of the Christian community. Love speaks to how Christians express Christs love to the world. Christians ought to agape others, as Christ has agape-ed us .

    While this may appear simple enough, these words are packed with meaning. To be patient and kind, for example, is to act in the same manner as Christ. Our patience toward one another is ultimately rooted in Christs eternal patience toward us. The kindness we receive in Jesus must be mirrored in the kindness we share with others. To do otherwise is to undercut the flow of the Spirit within us.

    When Christians are rude or aggressive, they are negating the very life to which Christ calls them. Furthermore, the call to love others demands that we recognize that we are not the only ones that Christ loves. We simply cannot be dismissive of someone to whom Christs love is directed. After all, if Christ is patient, kind, and forgiving toward others , what right do we have to be anything different?
