Where To Start Reading The Bible With Your Spouse

Make Sure Your Own Relationship With Christ Is Absolutely Central To Your Life

How Often Do You Read The Bible Together With Your Spouse?

The benefits of your spouse and you drenching yourselves in Gods Word and prayer are almost unfathomable. It builds a closeness that you can detect from day one.

Yet even though your covenant marriage to your spouse is the most important earthly, human relationship, your relationship to God the Father through His Son is even more vital. You could do all of the above things with your husband or wife, thinking that using them as some sort of holy checklist that will impart some kind of an instant, magical, happy fix on a struggling marriage. And maybe you both may go beyond this going through the motions checklist approach a tad by exerting a little heartfelt sincerity into the proceedings. But unless you truly make the Lord Jesus Christ the undisputed King and Master of your life, things will still be off-kilter and God wont work through you as fully as He could otherwise.

Make sure:

Discuss this blog post with your spouse and look to integrate some of these ideas into your own lives. With humble hearts that are sincere and loving Christ, coming together in prayer and Bible reading will have both of you experiencing a full, rich sense of intimacy of which youve never dreamed before.

Use Simple Techniques For Copywork Memorization And Understanding Once Your Kids Are More Familiar With The Basics Of The Bible

Here are some specific ideas:

  • If your children are older than age four, start looking for some key words in your Bible reading time that you can explain to them. This might be something like looking for the words faith or hope as you read the New Testament letters and telling them a little more about what that means.
  • Pick a few Bible verses to teach your toddler or preschooler on a special topic and say it a couple of times each day using fun voices and silly actions.
  • If you want copywork, my friend Sarah at My Joy-Filled Life has some excellent suggestions for Bible Copywork Resources!
  • Proverbs for Children: Handwriting, Copy-work and Memorization is a workbook that can be purchased if you dont want to use ink printing your own, but printing your own really isnt that costly if you print in black and white.
  • Check out Gods Word in My Heart for simple verse memorization ideas if you have children between the ages of two and seven!

There are many simple ways to memorize Scripture verses that are fun and effective!

You Model Something For Your Kids

When my son wakes up in the morning and finds me reading my bible, it models something for him. And he finds me like this every day, okay, not every day. Because lets be honest, some days he finds me in bed because hes woke up way too early!

But most days he wakes up to me reading Gods Word.

And if he wakes up before I do, I read with him. Im helping him to see that starting my day this way is important and it helps him to create that habit too.

This is another one of the benefits to reading the Bible every day. And like I said before, this is what magnifies the importance of reading the Bible in relation to my role as a mom. It trains my son for how to start reading the bible for himself.

Hes definitely not there yet, by himself. But still. It motivates me more, because I know that by doing this, my son will struggle with it less than I did in the past.

All of these are benefits to reading the bible simply because he has seen me modeling daily reading of the bible for and with him.

  • It signals a habit to wake up early.
  • Letting my son see me read shows him its important.
  • Reading to him in my Bible tells him hes important to me too.

And, when I read with him, Ive helped him feel included. Sometimes when someone is just learning how to start reading the bible, it can make them feel isolated.

But this approach, modeling bible reading to your kids is invitational.

Settle All Disputes And Quarrels

Some people take misunderstandings destructively, and they create too many negative meanings to mere disagreements or conflicts of opinions. This action then quickly escalates into a full-blown war that will only end with so much hurt.

As a Christian couple, you should be mindful of your utterances and behavior when you disagree with your spouse. Quarreling is one of the ways the devil creeps into the marriage and tries to destroy it. During a disagreement, listen to your partner and try to understand their point of view, then come up with a calm and loving way to air your counter opinion. Afterward, try to reach a compromise, as this is the only way to avoid a crisis in most scenarios.
