#2: Bless those who persecute you bless and do not curse.

#5: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

The Gift Of Encouragement

Some people are better encouragers than others. Some have the spiritual gift of exhortation. Exhorters want to see others mature in Christ. They encourage you to make godly decisions and walk in the Lord when youre feeling discouraged.

Exhorters motivate you to apply biblical Scriptures to your life. Exhorters are eager to help you grow in the Lord. Though exhorters can correct you, they are not overly critical. When youre going through trials you are going to want to talk to an exhorter. They allow you to see trials in the positive light. They remind you of Gods love and His sovereignty.

Being reminded and experiencing Gods love drives us to remain obedient in our trials. An exhorter will help you to praise the Lord in the storm. Its such a blessing to walk alongside an encourager.

Barnabas is a great example of someone in the Bible with the gift of encouragement. Barnabas sold a field he owned to provide for the church. Throughout Acts we notice Barnabas encouraging and comforting believers. Barnabus even stood up for Paul to the disciples who were still skeptical of his conversion.

18. Romans 12:7-8 If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Why Should We Pray For Others

We pray for others for comfort, for salvation, for healing, for safety for any number of reasons. God uses prayer to align our hearts to His will. We can pray that someone comes to know God, or that God will allow their lost dog to return home we can pray for any reason at all.

5. 2 Corinthians 1:11 You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

6. Psalm 17:6 I call on you, my God, for you will answer me turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.

7. Psalm 102:17 He will respond to the prayer of the destitute he will not despise their plea.

8. James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

9. Colossians 4:3-4 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

Psalm : 3 Pray With Great Expectations

In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice in the morning I lay my requests before youand wait expectantly.

Im not a morning person, so left to my own devices, the first thoughts that go through my mind in the morning are something like, *grumble* I just want more sleep.

This is a verse I memorized in college because I wanted this to be my first thought in the morning pray and wait with great expectations.

It adds connection, intentionality, and a sense of wonder, even in morning stupors.

Jesus Example Of Intercessory Prayer

In the midst of His greatest trial, Jesus prayed fervently. What would you have prayed about when facing torture and death? Its fascinating to see what was on Jesus mind as He prayed, not only for Himself , but for His disciples and for us:

As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me .

Jesus did not just focus inward, but by His words and His prayers showed that He wanted love and joy and peace and patience and all the fruit of Gods Spirit for His followers.

He knew that His trial would be their trial. He knew that when He, the good Shepherd, was struck, the sheep will be scattered . He prayed for themand usout of love and deep concern.

Jesus Christ is our Intercessor . He lived a human life of trials and challenges, so He understands what we are going through. He is at our side and can sympathize with our weaknesses, and He makes it possible for us to receive the mercy and help we need when we approach the throne of grace . And He wants us to learn to be intercessors too.

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.

There is always power in prayer, whether we are alone in our bedrooms or in a sanctuary full of other believers.

The Bible Supports Praying To The Saints

Most Bible-believing Christians object to the Catholic practice of praying to the saints. These critics worry that Catholics will go to hell for offending God with a neo-pagan system of worship. They have four main criticisms of the custom, all of which they push forward vigorously.

First, they accuse Catholics of worshipping Mary and the other saints. This violates the first commandment: You shall not have any other gods before me .

Additional proof that Catholics worship the saints is that they make statues of them, in violation of the next commandment: You shall not make for yourself an idol or any image which is in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters which are under the earth you shall not bow down and serve them because I am the Lord your God . Catholics make statues of the saints whom they worship, thereby committing the double sin of polytheism and idolatry.

The second objection to praying to the saints is that, even if Catholics do not worship the saints, they are at least calling upon the spirits of the dead. Scripture explicitly forbids conjuring the dead in many passages:

A third objection is that there is only one mediator with the Father, Jesus Christ. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, a man, Jesus Christ, who has given himself as a ransom for all, the testimony in its own time . Jesus Christ is fully satisfactory as the mediator between sinners and God. No one should ever ask the saints for intercession.

What Is Intercessory Prayer

Intercessory prayer is prayer for the needs of others. Praying for others is an unselfish expression of love.

Why does God want us to pray for others? Because intercessory prayer reflects Gods own character of outgoing love and mercy. God wants us to think like He does, and praying for others helps us to think beyond ourselves and to grow in compassion for others.

God compares prayer with sweet-smelling incense that pleases Him .

Romans : 26 Praying Wordless Groans

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Again, I just love how the point of prayer is not the words at all. There have been moments when I desperately needed God, but just couldnt form the words.

There have been nights when all I can muster is, Jesus. Praise God for the gift of the Spirit who fills in all of our gaps!
