What Sin Is Unforgivable In The Bible

Does The Bible Say Jesus Died For Our Sins

What is the unforgivable sin?

In Marks Gospel, Jesus states -during his ministry, in Mark, Chapter 10 that he, the son of man, came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. And in these sermons, they talk about the death of Jesus, but they never mention that Jesuss death is an atonement for sin.

The Unpardonable Sin Is A Conscious Act

Luther is right to distinguish between active blasphemy and passive blasphemy. When he speaks of passive blasphemy as those self-sabotaging ideas which the Devil insidiously plants in the brains of believers, he is happy to include believers in the population of individuals who are susceptible to such an attack.

Yet, if you know anything about Luther, he would never in his wildest imaginings permit that a believer could have their very forgiveness from God stripped from them against their will by the Devil. And so, Lutherâs distinction is helpful to guard believers with besetting sins and doubts from the notion that they have committed the unforgivable sin by the mere fact that they continually struggle with sinâeven a single sinâtheir entire lives. This, Luther believes, does not qualify as the kind of unrepentance which justifies condemnation.

Active blasphemy, alternatively, is the conscious rejection of the Holy Spirit. Luther uses words here that indicate a roving sentinelâthe human mind that delights in blaspheming God, rejecting the Spirit, speaking words of spite against Him, and perpetuating doubt among the world about His worthiness to be worshipped. This, Luther believes, is the sin which is unforgivable, because it despises the faith by which God saves all humankind.

View 3 Attribute Spirit

This view is common among dispensationalists. Some who hold this view specify that one could commit this sin only during Jesus earthly ministry because the Spirit-empowered miracles refer exclusively to the miracles that Jesus performed. Others argue that one could commit this sin during the period of supernatural sign miracles in the first century but not after that since sign miracles ceased. Limiting the miracles to Jesus miracles, they argue, is too narrow since the context of Luke 12:10 includes miracles by Jesus twelve disciples.

This view is not compelling because, as D. A. Carson argues, Apart from the question of whether miracles take place now, Jesus elsewhere warned that miracles are not necessarily the criterion of true discipleship i.e., they do not necessarily reveal the Spirits presence and power.1

Blaspheming The Holy Spirit

The first unforgivable sin is the one most commonly known among Christians. We might remember Jesus words out of Mark 3:28-30, where He says:

Assuredly, I say to you,

all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter

but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation

because they said, He has an unclean spirit.

The context of this passage is located at the very beginning of Jesus ministry. He preaches and works mighty signs and wonders all over the place of His home area Galilee. People get healed, demons manifest and are cast out, and great multitudes flock follow Jesus.

It is so crazy that even His own family grabs Him and tells Him straight, He is crazy.

It all together creates a situation that attracts great attention. So much so the scribes come all the way from Jerusalem to see whats going on.

They say in Mark 3:22, He has Beelzebub, and By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.

When I studied this topic I discovered something about the word said.

It is usually not a big word, but in my research, I found out that this word is written in a form of continuity: Imperfect Active Indicative, 3rd Person Plural.

It is important because it could also be translated as they kept on saying. They didnt just say it once.

We can the same pattern in Matthew 9:34.

But the Pharisees said, He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.

Are There Any Unforgivable Sins

Free Copies of Unforgivable Sin

In Bible it is written about one unforgivable sin: the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This is one of Jesus most enigmatic, controversial and haunting statements. Over the past two millennia, many tortured souls have struggled with this warning. Jesus hadnt been teaching in public for a long time when His listeners began comparing Him to their teachers, called scribes, part of a conservative Jewish group known as the Pharisees. When Jesus addressed the scribes of His day. He was on the verge of a seismic historical-redemptive change that came along with His life and ministry. So in what sense could His warning to the scribes aboutblasphemy against the Spirit be something unique to Jesus time, when the old covenant was to be ended and the new covenant inaugurated?

Should these words fall on our ears in the same way twenty centuries later. Going back in history, through Acts and the Epistles, we find nothing else to be called blasphemy against the Spirit. Which signals our need to be careful in applying this precise term today.

Are all sins equal?

All sins are equal. There are no more or less serious sins but there are obvious sins: murder, fornication. And very subtle sins: pride, carelessness, boredom, laziness. the discovery of sins comes only after we pray to God to shed a ray of light on us, to see the pit full of misery in which we find ourselves. When its dark, we dont see and cant clean anything, we live with the illusion that we have no sins.

Jesus Knew Their Thoughts

When Jesus spoke of blasphemy against the Spirit in Matthew 12:2232 and accused the Pharisees of committing this sin, he used a key phrase that adds insight into his meaning: “But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, ‘No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.’ Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, ‘Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart’ ” .

In verse 25, the passage says, Jesus knew their thoughts.

Jesus pronounced judgment on the Pharisees as committing the sin of blasphemy from his unique perspective of not only hearing their words butknowing their thoughtsas well. The Lord knew that as they witnessed the miracle of Jesus healing a blind, mute, demon-possessed man, theylike the others who saw it as wellwere sensing the quickening of the Holy Spirit within their hearts that this was indeed a true miracle of God. Nevertheless, the arrogance within their hearts was so great that they willfully rejected the hastening of the Spirit.

Because Jesus knew the hardened state of their hearts, he was moved to offer a warning to the Pharisees. He wanted them to know that if they willfully rejected the leading of the Holy Spirit, they would never receive Gods forgiveness, and with it, the salvation of God in Jesus Christ.

What Does The Bible Say About Adultery And Fornication

In Matthew 15:8-19, Jesus said, Out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts, of murder, adultery, and fornication, things that defile a person. Paul also warns that fornication is a sin against your body in 1 Corinthians 6:18, urging believers to flee from it.

On Gods List Only One Sin Is Absolutely Unforgivable

Dear Rev. Graham:

How many sins can you list that God wont ever forgive? I worry about this, because I know Ive not been a good person, and some of the things Ive done are probably on that list. J.F.D.

Rev. Graham: Only one sin that cant be forgiven is on Gods list and that is the sin of rejecting Him and refusing His offer of forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ. This alone is the unforgivable sin, because it means we are saying that the Holy Spirits witness about Jesus is a lie .

Why is it so serious to reject Christ? The reason, first of all, is because of who He was. He wasnt just another religious teacher He was God in human flesh but when we deny this, we limit Him and assume He is unable to save us.

The main reason why its so serious to reject Christ, however, is because He is Gods appointed means of salvation. Our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven if we dont, we have no reason to expect God to welcome us into Heaven. But by His death and resurrection Christ provided the way for us to be forgiven and cleansed of all our sins.

Commit your life to Christ without delay.

The Unpardonable Sin Is Not The Sin Unto Death Mentioned In 1 John : 16

Is there Unforgivable sin?

1 John 5:1617

16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.

This sin is committed by a brother in Christ. It is a decision to keep sinning in which God calls His child home after attempts of chastisement have failed. It is the final sin to which God says, Enough! If you wont live for me on Earth, I will take you to Heaven now rather than allow you to bring continual reproach upon My name.

Jesus Has Compassion For Human Skepticism

Chrysostom puts his thumb on the issue best.

It is odd that in this passage, Jesus essentially says: âItâs understandable that you would reject me, because I look like any other human being. But you donât have that same excuse when you reject the Spirit, who does not bear the distraction of having a human body.â

It certainly feels strange to us that Jesus would permit his own rejection. But he is making a very generous accommodation for human psychology. Humans are right to be skeptical of things that they donât understand. But the Spirit encounters us in a way that is identifiable as God himselfâit is the direct speaking of God to the human heart. Insofar as we are able to reject Godâs direct encounter with us, we are without hope of forgiveness.

But there is a more basic theological point here.

The more directly God encounters the individual, the more consciously they must reject God and the forgiveness he offers. In other words, what makes the unpardonable sin so unforgivable is that it is the explicit rejection of forgiveness itself. It is unpardonable to the degree that the free offer of pardon on Godâs part is itself insulted and rejected on its very premise on manâs part.

When Does A Religion Become An Obsession

People who experience this form of OCD suffer from obsessive religious doubts and fears, unwanted blasphemous thoughts and images, as well as compulsive religious rituals, reassurance seeking, and avoidance. People with religious OCD strongly believe in and fear punishment from a divine being or deity.

Hope For Those Feeling Unforgivable

If you do fear youve committed some unforgivable sin, or even that your heart has already reached such a state of hardness, God does offer you hope. If you worry about unforgivable sin, then most likely you are not there. Not yet. Hearts with settled hardness against Jesus and his Spirit dont go around worrying about it.

Its easy to get worked up over this enigmatic unforgivable sin in the Gospels and miss the remarkable gospel expression of Jesuss open arms that comes immediately before the warning: Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter . All sins. Whatever blasphemies uttered. Through faith in Jesus. This is where the Gospel accounts all lead: to the cross. This Son of Man, as he progressively demonstrates in the Gospels, is God himself and Lord of the universe. And he became one of us, and died for our sins, and rose to offer full and entire forgiveness for all who repent and embrace him as Lord, Savior, and Treasure.

View 2 Assert What Is False About The Spirit

Most of the early church fathers who address the unpardonable sin take this view. For example, Cyril of Jerusalem asserts, A man must often fear to say, either from ignorance or assumed reverence, what is improper about the Holy Spirit, and thereby come under this condemnation .

This view is unlikely because it is describes the sin too generally. Many non-Christians have expressed false beliefs about the Spirit but later have become Christians and believed correctly about the Spirit. And many Christians have expressed false beliefs about the Spirit but later corrected those beliefs as they matured in understanding what the Bible reveals about the Spirit. For example, a Christian may realize that it is wrong to refer to the Holy Spirit as it since he is a person.

Abundant Pardon For All

  • 1 John 1:9 = “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
  • Ezekiel 33:11 = “Say to them: As I live, says the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?
  • 1 Timothy 1:13-15 = Although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.”

Who Is The Holy Spirit

He is The Creator Spirit, present before the creation of the universe and through his power everything was made in Jesus Christ, by God the Father.

For the majority of Christian denominations, the Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Holy Trinity Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and is Almighty God..

The Continuation Of Pharisaical Sin

What exactly is the UNFORGIVABLE SIN in the BIBLE?

Did the Pharisees repent and trust Christ? No.

After the resounding logical and theological beating the religious leaders had just suffered publically, they still would not humble themselves. Now they wanted a sign that Christ was from God.

Matthew 12:38

Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

Of course, our Lord would not give them another sign because they were rejected the signs right in front of them.

As a result, the Master gives them an even more stern warning and declares Himself the Messiah once again.

Matthew 12:3942

But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whales belly so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

View 1 Commit A Really Bad Sin Such As Adultery Murder Or Denying Christ Under Pressure

According to this popular view, most sins are forgivable, but sins such as adultery, murder, and denying Christ when threatened with persecution are so bad that they are unforgivable. This view is wrong not merely because it doesnt fit the literary context of Matthew 12, Mark 3, and Luke 12. It is wrong because the Bible includes examples of people who committed those very sins and received Gods forgiveness: King David committed adultery and murdered Uriah Paul testifies, formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent and the Apostle Peter denied Christ three times . Genuine Christians still sin in all kinds of waysincluding grieving the Holy Spirit of God . Anyone who claims otherwise is a liar: If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us . But God forgives repenting sinners because of Jesus: If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous .
