UNDATED _ Here is a brief sketch of the history of the Thomas Nelson publishing firm:

1798: Thomas Nelson, 18, opens a second-hand bookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Early 1800s: Nelson begins publishing classic literature, such as English preacher John BunyansPilgrims Progress,in inexpensive editions. The company also publishes the Bible in 32-page installments for purchase bycommon folk. Mid-1800s: Thomas Nelson and Sons becomes the largest publishing house in Scotland and opens a New York office.

Mid-1900s: Nelson debuts the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Shortly thereafter, the company shifts focus to educational and coffee-table books.

1960: The American branch of the company merges with The Thomson Organization, a worldwide communications and publishing firm. The Edinburgh printing and binding operations are sold.

1969: Sam Moore, current Thomas Nelson Publishers CEO, buys The Thomson Organization after starting his own Bible publishing company in 1961.

1975: Nelson starts development of New King James Version of the Bible, finalized in 1982.

1980s: Nelson acquires several companies in publishing and manufacturing fields, comes close to bankruptcy and sells most of the newly acquired companies.

1992: Nelson acquires Word Inc., a premier Christian music and publishing company from Capital Cities/ABC.

1995: Thomas Nelson listed on the New York Stock Exchange acquires C.R. Gibson gift and stationery company.

In 1950, 19-year-old Sam Moore came to Columbia, South Carolina, with an intent to pursue medical training, and he worked his way through college at the University of South Carolina and later Columbia Bible College by selling Bibles door-to-door. Building on his experience, he founded the National Book Company in 1958, and Royal Publishers in 1961. When he began selling stock in the latter firm in 1962, one of his early shareholders was Morrow Coffey Graham, mother of noted evangelist Billy Graham.

Moore led Royal Publishers to success for the next five years, more than doubling sales every year, and resulting in the Thomson Organization asking if he would take control of Nelson’s North American operations. Instead, Moore surprised Thomson by offering to purchase Nelson. Moore took over on March 7, 1969, preferring to keep the company’s name and logo. In the 1960s, Thomas Nelson moved its headquarters from New York to Camden, New Jersey. It moved again to Nashville, Tennessee in the 1970s. From 1979 to 1982, Nelson developed the New King James Version of the Bible and under Moore began diversifying the company with a gift division.

After predicting his betrayal and Peters eventual denial of him, Jesus comforts his disciples by telling them he is going to prepare a place for them, and that they know the way to the place he is going.

Reasonably, Thomas points out:

This sets up one of Jesus more famous quotes, which only appears in the Gospel of John:

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. John 14:67

The gospel writers frequently use the disciples questions to tee up Jesus teachings. Some Christians use this passage to read into Thomas character, but thats probably not the point. Philip has a similarly blunt line after this to set up another one of Jesus important monologues.

Basically, if you have issues with your Bible, just contact the publisher, but you should keep your receipt in case you need it.

HarperCollins Publishers today announced it was buying Christian/inspirational publisher Thomas Nelson “for an undisclosed sum.” It’s a huge move since the company will now reportedly control about half of the Christian publishing market.

The question now is how the acquisition will play with Zondervan, Thomas Nelson’s chief competition. HarperCollins, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, acquired Zondervan in 1988. Thomas Nelson says it is reportedly the largest Christian publisher in the world and the seventh largest trade-book publisher in the United States. Zondervan says it is the world’s leading Bible publisher.

In 2009, then-Thomas Nelson CEO Michael Hyatt reported that his publisher and Zondervan control half of the Christian publishing marketa percentage that had held relatively steady over the previous few years.
