What Does The Bible Say About Mercy
When you think of Gods mercy you automatically think about grace. Many people get the two mixed up. Although they are close in meaning they are not the same thing. Grace is Gods unmerited favor and it goes beyond mercy. Mercy is God not giving us the punishment that we deserve for our sins.
As a kid me and my family would always play fight and when someone gets you in a submission we would yell mercy mercy mercy. As humans we all desire mercy, but the question is, should we receive mercy and the answer is no. We have all sinned before a Holy God.
He has to punish us. How would you feel about a judge who has HD video evidence, but still lets serial killers, thieves, and rapists go free without any punishment? We all know that is an evil judge. That judge is more wicked than the criminals that he let go free.
The legal system shows that you have to punish criminals. This responsibility to punish evildoers becomes even greater with a holy God. Out of Gods great mercy, love, and grace He came down in the form of man and lived the perfect life that we couldnt live. God desires perfection and He became perfection for us. Jesus is God in the flesh and He took upon the wrath of God that we deserve. I deserve to be punished, but yet God crushed His beloved and perfect Son for me. That is mercy.

Justice And Gods Goodness
The theme of justice however raises two formidable problems. The first is the need to defend Gods justice and goodness in the light of injustice. How can a just God tolerate evil? The Bible addresses this concern pointedly in Habakkuk.
Habakkuk complains to God that his people are ignoring his demand for justice, and he wonders why God allows the unjust to continue in their wickedness: Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me there is strife, and conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails . Habakkuk asks how Gods justice can reconcile with his experience of the world. Gods answer is that he has appointed the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people , to punish his rebellious children by taking them into exile.
Not surprisingly, this raises another moral dilemma for the prophet: Babylon is even more wicked than Judah ! How could God use such a vile tool, those who are a law to themselves ? God assures Habakkuk that he will eventually judge the Babylonians. In the meantime, the just must wait patiently, remain loyal to God, and trust God to show himself as just. In the words of Habakkuk 2:4, a verse the New Testament quotes three times , the righteous person will live by his faithfulness.
