Ways To Memorize Scripture

It means taking the time to sit down and think about each phrase and about what it means. Sometimes it means journaling my thoughts about the verse and about how the words apply to my life right now.

As I study my Bible each day, I might always pull the verse out and read it again, thinking about it with fresh perspective. Or I might talk to my husband about the way God taught me more about Himself through the expressions of the passage.

Every once in awhile, I stick the verse all over my house, in places that I will see it and be reminded of it all day long. Each time I see it, I read it, and think about what it means for my life at THIS moment.

And as my life is saturated with the verse or passage, as I am keeping it always at the front of my mind and attaching personal meaning to it, I find that the words grow in me in a natural way that pushes me closer to Jesus in the process.

Here are a list of Scriptures to memorize. Try out some of these ways to memorize Bible verses, using this list as a starting point.

Use Multiple Senses To Remember The Bible Books

This is the easiest scripture memory trick I have every found. Memorize ...

Use multiple ways of conveying the information to help make it stick. Posters can help children visualize the books of the Bible. Songs can give them a catchy way to hear and remember.

To that add, look for physical ways for students to put the books into order. You can use wooden blocks, Legos, and even a hopscotch game to get their memorization muscles moving.

Bible Verses To Memorize Tip : Share It

They say that the best way to learn is by sharing. So, as you go along this journey, why not try reaching out to a friend whom you think may need Gods Word the most?

It can either be through a simple chat, call, or even an inspiring post on social media.

You may want to caption your photos with Bible verses and write a post on your social media wall.

Whatever manner you prefer, make sure to involve your friends in this journey. Share with them what you know! Share with them, Jesus! Here are some great social media graphics you can easily share.

Tip #: Translate The Verses Into Another Language

If you know more than one language, translating the verses youre memorizing from one language to another can be a tremendously effective way to memorize Scripture. When you do translation, you have to focus very closely on what each word means. This forces you to slow down and think hard about the verse, which causes it to be pressed into your memory.

Mnemonic Examples For Verse Numbers

How to Memorize Scripture (FAST & EASY)

Once youve understood this technique, it will be simple to create little associations to precede the associations you use for the verses themselves.

Have a look at this:

For Proverbs 18:13, for example, I see a large TV set that I actually owned vacuuming J Edgar Hoover using a Hoover vacuum.

Weird and memorizable, right? It is!

But why these images?

Because 18 for me is always represented by a few things, one of which is a TV set.

Not just any TV set, but a particular TV set that has meaning for me.

And when you know the Major Method, youll know that theres a very good reason that its a TV and not some other object.

Likewise with J Edgar Hoover with a Hoover vacuum.

It represents 13 because Im following this simple chart:

Sometimes for 13, I see Hoover vacuuming on the Hoover Dam. Theres actually a way to make that dam a Virtual Memory Palace that Ill talk about in the future. For now, here are 5 Memory Palace Examples you can learn about to enhance your practice.

In any case, having multiple images to draw upon is the Magnetic Memory Method Principle of Compounding. Its part of the joyful science of creating and using a Magnetic 00-99 P.A.O. Learn more in the MMM course on memorizing math, equations and all things related to numbers.

I know that this process might sound complex.

It really isnt once you get into it. After all, as Jeannie Koh explains in her Magnetic Memory Method Testimonial, using these techniques helped her reach her goals immensely:

Write It Into Your Heart

Reading the Scripture is a great place to start, but there is more.

When I was in college, I had to memorize large amounts of material for many of my classes, especially history. And what I quickly learned is that the fastest and easiest way to memorize any information is to write it down.

When we write, we interact with information in a more personal, intimate way. When we write we interact with each word, impressing it upon our minds. In fact, Scripture tells us in Proverbs 3:3:

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck write them upon the table of thine heart:

To really remember Gods Word, we need to write it into our hearts.

  • The process helps us to focus upon the words and their meaning, giving us a deeper understanding of Gods Word.
  • Writing Scripture has us internalize and digest what we write. What we digest becomes a part of us.
  • Writing Scripture helps us to remember. The physical act of writing helps us to remember much more easily what we are to trying to memorize.

My Wife Is A Genius She Gets All The Credit For This

I have a rather adorable 3-year-old boy named Nolan.

We want Nolan to memorize the Bible. But sitting in front of him saying a verse over and over again is a completely futile effort.

Is it because Im a bad parent?

Id like to think not!

What my wife discovered, and Im very thankful for is that the answer to our Bible memorization problems are solvedmusically.

Nolan LOVES music. Even the movies he watches are primarily chose because of the music in them. When he watches a movie for the first time we often have to rewind the songs so he can listen to them again, and again, and again.

So my wife discovered Genesis 1:1 as a song!

Nolan listened to this off and on for 2 days and had the verse totally memorized.

I cant even tell you how amazed we were. Even several weeks later Nolan still has this verse down cold. Its rather amazing.

So the next time you want to get Scripture into a childs headfind a cool YouTube video that puts the verse to music.

It worked wonders for us!

Highly Recommended App For Scripture Memory

This is the app for Scripture memory Ive been looking for since there have been apps. There are eight methods for reviewing/learning verses – all of which Ive used through my years of memorizing Scripture. Some of the methods have multiple levels of difficulty. You can place verses in groups that YOU label which is handy and keeps things organized. You can visually see your progress and memory health for each verse from the rings. The app has three Bible translations to choose from – NIV, ESV and KJV and so verses are very easy to add. But, this also means if you have a verse memorized in an older version or a different translation, you cant really use the app for that verse. I am currently using the free version. This may not be an issue in the premium version. All in all, the best of the six or seven Ive tried through the years.

Tip #: Repetition Is Key

The Most Powerful and Easy Way to Memorize Scripture Fast

Unless youre a genius with a photographic memory, youre going to need to go over the verses youre memorizing again and again. There simply is no substitute for repetition. Your goal is to get the verses burned into your brain to the point where you can repeat them easily and without error.

Dont worry if you make slow progress. The goal isnt to memorize verses as fast as possible. The goal is to begin storing up Gods word in your heart over time.

Pastor Adrian Rogers said:

“Hide the Word of God in your heart. Dont say, ‘I just cant memorize!’ Memory comes with concentration, motivation, and use. Your mind is a marvel, and you can remember far more than you think you can. Fill your mind with the Word so what is inside will flow forth blessing and honor to God.”

Memorizing Scripture Verses The Easiest Hack Youll Ever Find

Youll simply need to pick a verse that you want to memorize. This is a great list to start with.

Now write your verse on a3 x 5 card.

For example, if you wanted to memorize Psalm 119:9-11, the front of your 3 x 5 card would look like this:

How can a young man keep his way pure?

With my whole heart I seek you

let me not wander from your commandments!

I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11

Now flip your 3 x 5 card over and write the first letter of every word. Be sure to pay careful attention to write the exact punctuation and capitalization as well.

The back of your 3 x 5 card would look like this:

H c a y m k h w p?

B g i a t y w.

W m w h I s y

L m n w f y c!

I h s u y w i m h,

t i m n s a y. P 119:11

Boy, my spell checker had a field day with that one! It kinda looks like Im writing Greek! P

Here Are A Few Methods That Have Helped Me Memorize Key Bible Verses:

  • Understand the verse in context. This is where memorizing goes hand-in-hand with Bible study. We dont just take verses out of context and claim them for ourselves . As you study the text surrounding your key verse, youll begin to understand what the verse really means, and that will help you remember it.
  • Write the verse in your own words. Engage with the text, and try to summarize what the verse is saying in your own words. Youll find this steps helps make the verse your own.
  • Read the verse out loud. Re-read it several times for good measure. You can use these methods to make each read-through interesting and revealing.
  • Write the verse on an index card. This way you can take the verse with you whereever you go, and pull it out when you have a few moments to spare, like when youre waiting in line at your favorite fast-food restaurant.
  • Break down the verse in shorter chunks. If youre working with an especially long verse or youre trying to memorize a passage, try working on just a few words at a time. Repeat the first phrase 10 times out loud, until you have a handle on it, and then move to the next phrase. Then combine the two, and so on.
  • Repeat your memorized verses often. If you dont use it, you lose it. Or so Im told. And my fledgling French vocabulary is proof. Voulez-vous mangez un muffin aux bleuets avec moi?

Why Memorize Scripture Is It Important

Because the Bible says so! Thats an easy answer, right? But seriously, God told us to hide His Word in our heart so we dont sin. And if God said it, then thats really all I need to know in order to be convinced!

But on a practical note, its so important to memorize Scripture because it keeps us from temptation. Just take a look at Jesus time in the wilderness. He combated satan purely with Scripture. And we can do the same in our lives.

Scripture can also be a comfort when we need it. I dont know about you, but thereve been plenty of times in my life where I just need some encouragement. Im always amazed at how much Scripture comes back to my mind. Even verses I memorized as a little girl.

    Amazing!
