We often use various methods to communicate or teach others.Likewise God uses these general methods:
1. Commands and direct statements
1 Corinthians 14:37 – Paul wrote commands of the Lord. Manyother passages also mention the importance of commands .
The Bible uses commands in teaching us about such subjects asbaptism , love , the Lord’s supper , etc.
2. Examples and illustrations
Instead of directly commanding us to do something, Godsometimes tells us indirectly by giving an instance in whichChristians acted by His guidance. We are expected to imitate orfollow these examples.
1 Peter 2:21,22 – Jesus left an example we should follow.
Philippians 3:17 4:9 – Imitate Paul’s example as a pattern.Do the things seen in him as well as things heard from him.
Acts 15:5-11 – Peter taught others to imitate his example inteaching Gentiles.
Specifically, we can learn much about salvation from examplesof conversion in the book of Acts. Still other Bible examplesteach us about faith , the actionof baptism , the day for the Lord’s supper ,and plurality of elders .
3. Logical necessary conclusions
Some truths are not directly or expressly stated yet theynecessarily follow as a logical consequence of what is stated.For example, if I tell you my birthday, you can determine my age.
Acts 17:1-3 – Paul’s custom was to reason from the Scripturesto convince Jews that Jesus was Christ, yet the prophecies heused did not directly state the conclusion.

Understand The Literary Genre
The genre goes along with the introductory elements mentioned above, and often it’s mentioned in the introduction to a book of the Bible. But it’s worth highlighting on its own as it can affect the later interpretation of what you are reading. Genres found in the Bible include narrative literature, prophecy, the law, wisdom literature, Gospel and Epistle .
While it is important to read, study, and interpret the Bible in a literal way, we must also remember that the Bible uses symbolic and metaphorical language, figures of speech and hyperbole.
For instance, we understand that in the Psalms, considered in the genre of poetry, David didnt literally flood his bed with tears or drench his couch with weeping. We intuitively know this means he cried a lot! The same could be said for much of the symbolism in Song of Solomon. This is poetic language, and it is good to remember we are reading poetry when we read those books.
The book of Proverbs, one of the books of “wisdom” literature, is filled with, wellproverbs. These are proverbs, not promises. They are pithy statements that are generally true and wise, but not necessarily how things will always play out, for example, there are many well-intentioned Christian parents who have raised up their child in the way they should go, but they departed from it when they grew older . And sometimes, its a good idea to answer a fool according to his folly, but other times, its a bad idea to answer a fool according to his folly .

I bought the King James Study Bible because the King James Version was my first Bible version and the one I used for many, many years and I still love it. I can still recall verses of Scripture more often in the King James than other versions so I just like it and thought I would check out this Study Bible.
A Helpful Tools For Study
Translations: The Bible was written in Hebrew andGreek, so we need translations into our language. Since the Bibleis verbally inspired, translations ought to give the exactmeaning of the original words.
Unfortunately some modern “translations” are tooloose, emphasizing eloquent expression instead of originalmeaning. Other translations come from one man or onedenomination, so their views may influence their work. Seek atranslation made by many men from different groups, who believein verbal inspiration and who emphasize the meaning of theoriginal words .
For a primary study Bible, we suggest the King James Version,New King James Version, American Standard Version, or NewAmerican Standard Version. Others may be useful for comparison,but not for a main study Bible. Comparing several translationsmay help clarify the text.
Cross references: Some Bibles have footnotes on eachverse that refer to other similar verses. From those verses youmight find still others, etc. This is useful for “studyingother verses on the subject.”
Concordance: A concordance lists words in the Biblealphabetically and gives passages where each word is used. Someconcordances are brief others are more complete.
Uses of a concordance include: finding many passages abouta subject finding a particular verse if you know one or twowords in it determining the meaning of a word by studyingverses where it is used.

The 1611 and 1769 texts of the first three verses from I Corinthians 13 are given below.
1. Though I speake with the tongues of men & of Angels, and haue not charity, I am become as sounding brasse or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I haue the gift of prophesie, and vnderstand all mysteries and all knowledge: and though I haue all faith, so that I could remooue mountaines, and haue no charitie, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestowe all my goods to feede the poore, and though I giue my body to bee burned, and haue not charitie, it profiteth me nothing.
1. There are a number of superficial edits in these three verses: 11 changes of spelling, 16 changes of typesetting , three changes of punctuation, and one variant textwhere “not charity” is substituted for “no charity” in verse two, in the erroneous belief that the original reading was a misprint.

Religious And Political Impact
Meanwhile, back in England, the bitter religious disputes that had motivated the new Bible translation would spiral by the 1640s into the English Civil Wars, which ended in the capture and execution of King Jamess son and successor, Charles I.
If James had hoped to quash any doubt of his divine right to power, he clearly hadnt succeeded. Meyers points out that the King James Bible gave people access to passages that were not ordinarily read in churchpassages that limit the power of secular rulers like James. As an example, she cites Deuteronomy 17, which reads, One from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee. But it also suggests that the king should not acquire too many horses, wives or silver and gold for himself and that he, like anyone else, should be subject to the laws of God.
King James wanted to solidify his own reputation as a good king by commissioning the translation, Meyers says. Maybe he didn’t know about those passages about the limits of the king’s powers, or think making them available to all might threaten his divine right as king.

C Define The Meaning Of The Words
The Bible is verbally inspired – each word is from God . The message is revealed in words, and weunderstand it only when we understand the words.
Words are sometimes used today in ways that completely differfrom the meaning in the Bible. Consider such words as thefollowing: saint, church, bishop, Christian, etc.
The word “baptism” is defined today as sprinkling,pouring, or immersion, but in the Bible it means immersion .
Dictionaries may help, but the best way to learn Bible wordsis to study them by the means already discussed: context andparallel passages.

B Consider Context And Background
“Context” means the verses surrounding the one beingstudied, especially verses on the same subject. By “background”we mean who is speaking, to whom they speak, etc. These are justa particular form of considering all the Bible says .
Consider some specific benefits of considering context andbackground:
Word meanings: Words may have different meanings indifferent contexts. We learn the correct meaning by how the wordis used.
Acts 20:17,28 shows that the “elders” are”bishops” or “overseers” . Hence, bothterms refer to the same work or office.
Further explanation: When a verse confuses us, otherstatements nearby may clarify the meaning.
Acts 16:31-34 – Some people claim v31 means we are saved by”faith only,” so baptism is not needed. But v32-34shows that only part of the gospel had been taught. When all wastaught, baptism was so urgent that the sinner had to do it evenin the middle of the night .
Proper application: Often a statement can best beunderstood by considering how it is applied in context.
Romans 7:1-7 – We have been discharged from the law, but whatlaw does this mean? It included, “Thou shalt not covet” – one of the Ten Commands. Hence, the law we are freed fromincludes the Ten Commands.
The speaker: Every Bible word is infallible, butsometimes it infallibly records the sins or lies of falliblepeople.
Job 2:9 says “Curse God and die.” But who says this?Job’s wife said it, and was immediately rebuked by Job.
Considerations For A New Version
The newly crowned King James convened the Hampton Court Conference in 1604. That gathering proposed a new English version in response to the perceived problems of earlier translations as detected by the Puritan faction of the Church of England. Here are three examples of problems the Puritans perceived with the Bishops and Great Bibles:
First, Galatians iv. 25 . The Greek word susoichei is not well translated as now it is, bordereth neither expressing the force of the word, nor the apostle’s sense, nor the situation of the place. Secondly, psalm cv. 28 , ‘They were not obedient ‘ the original being, ‘They were not disobedient.’ Thirdly, psalm cvi. 30 , ‘Then stood up Phinees and prayed,’ the Hebrew hath, ‘executed judgment.’
The committees started work towards the end of 1604. King James VI and I, on 22 July 1604, sent a letter to Archbishop Bancroft asking him to contact all English churchmen requesting that they make donations to his project.
