What Does It Mean To Be Humble In The Bible

Is Being Humble A Weakness

What It Means To Be Humble And Have Humility

Humility should not be seen as a sign of weakness. Leaders who take pride in what their team or department accomplishes, rather than stressing their own accomplishments, promote good will and harmony. Those who ask questions, learn. Those who listen, communicate their caring more effectively.

When God Humbles His People

To be sure, we are not left without some postures we can cultivate and means to pursue. Daily humbling ourselves under the authority of Gods word, and humbling ourselves by obeying his words, and humbling ourselves by coming desperately to him in prayer, and humbling ourselves in fasting these all have their place in our overall response as creatures to our Creator. But first and foremost, we need to know humbling ourselves is responsive to God.

He is the one who created our world from nothing by the power of his word . He is the one who formed the first man from the ground and the first woman from his side . He is the one who chose to reveal himself to us, to speak words into our world through his prophets and apostles, to make known himself and his Son and his plan for our redemption. And he is the one who, through the gentleness and merciful severity of his providence, humbles his church again and again, from without and from within, and in his humbling brings us to the fork in the road: Now, how will you respond to my humbling purposes in this trial? Will you humble yourself?

When the next humbling trial comes, will you bow up with pride, or bow down in humility? God has a particular promise for you in these moments. The God of all power will exalt the humble in his perfect timing.

What Does Humbling Yourself Before God Really Mean

    Humble Definition Bible

While reading my Bible, I was inspired to write a short story based on the passage I was studying. This story is based on Luke 18:9-14, a parable that Jesus told. Now, Im not a professional scholar of Jewish culture, so I am not claiming 100% historical accuracy. But I think it captures at least some of the heart of the story.

In this parable, we have two very different men. Initially, they seem different because of their occupation, status, and lifestyle. But I think the true difference lies in their heart.

Heres my story based on this parable, followed by more of my thoughts below:

Things Everyone Should Know About Humility

Is your understanding of humility Biblically correct? You may be surprised!

There can be a lot of confusion that surrounds humility. Often, humility is associated with quietness, submission and thoughts of inadequacy. But, what does the Bible actually say about it?

Here are four Biblical points that every Christian should know about humility.

It’s Hard To Be Humble: Biblical Humility

I consider myself a country music fan.

Dont get me wrong I dont prefer this style of music. I just admire it for its creativity. If you were to read a list of popular country tunes from a couple of generations ago, youd find some clever song titles, including If the Devil Danced in Empty Pockets, Hed Have a Ball in Mine She Got the Goldmine, I Got the Shaft and my personal favorite, I Gave Her the Ring, She Gave Me the Finger.

One particular song from that same genre of music is a somewhat tongue-in-cheek description of a significant struggle in my life. Heres an excerpt:

Oh Lord, its hard to be humble

When youre perfect in every way

I cant wait to look in the mirror

‘Cuz I get better lookin each day

To know me is to love me

I must be a hell of a man

Oh Lord, its hard to be humble

But Im doin the best that I can 1

As ridiculous as those lyrics sound, they paint a relatively accurate picture of my attitude for a long period of my life. It is extremely hard to be humble when youre full of pride.

    Hot Stuff

It wasnt until college when I started to follow Jesus that my self-perception began to change. When I started reading scripture, praying, and hanging out with Godly people, I started to experience humility for the first time. Because humility isnt simply a low view of yourself its having a biblical view of yourself. Knowing that you are sinful beyond measure yet loved beyond imagination tends to make a person humble.

What Does It Mean To Be Humble Before God

Now what does it mean to humble yourself before God? To me, it means coming before Jesus in awe and reverence, despite of what people may think of you. Its being willing to say, I was wrong. Its taking the focus off of yourself and focusing on what really matters God! Come to the cross with a clear conscience.

Humility Is The Key To Progress

Christian Humility | What it Means to be Humble

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:6-8, 10. God works according to laws. It is a natural law that if we humble ourselves under Gods mighty hand, surrendering our own will and honor, then He will give us the grace that we need to live a Christian life in truth, as well as exalt us in His time.

To be humble is to have the same mindset as Jesus Christ. He existed in the form of God, but did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, or held onto. Instead, He took on the form of a servant, and came in the likeness of men. And, being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:7-8.

Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. He did not value His own self-importance or honor, but freely gave it up in every situation so that Gods will could be carried out and God could be glorified through His life.

You Can Ask For Forgiveness When You Are Humble

Even if you think you are only one percent wrong, you can easily apologize for what you did wrong.

    Humility Is Needed For Praying

    Pin on God is Love!

When you are going before Gods presence you have to be humble. You have to show God how unworthy you are. There is no way you can pray to God when you are all boastful. In Luke 18:9-14, Jesus talks about two men who went to pray. One was a Pharisee and was busy telling God how he has been good, how he prays twice a week and how he is all righteous. The other man told God how he is a sinner and hopes that God would be merciful to him. Jesus says that the second man went home justified rather than the first one. For every one that exalts himself shall be abased and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

Why Is It Important That Christians Repeatedly Humble Themselves Before The Lord

Its hard to hear God when we stand tall and proud declaring, I can do it myself. But we need him. This life holds troubles that vary in intensity based on the seasons of life we find ourselves in. God gives us wisdom and he directs our steps. We need to recognize our need for him in every aspect of our lives and to come humbly to receive his grace, strength, and power for living.

Another reason why we need to make humbling ourselves before the Lord a regular practice is because of the two-sided reality of following Christ. We are complete in Christ, yet we are becoming more like him. We have the status of kings and the duties of a servant. We know the presence of Christ but experience the pressure of sin. We are made right with God through Christ, yet we experience daily problems where we fail to make the right choices. Humbling ourselves before the Lord helps us not to grow discouraged by this two-sided reality, but to rely on Gods power to help us overcome.

    God Opposes The Proud

Make no mistake, we do have a part to play in humility. It is not only an effect but a command. In particular, two apostles tell us to humble ourselves. And both do so in strikingly similar ways, adding the promise that God will exalt us on the other side:

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

When trials come, will we bow up with pride, or bow down in humility?

So far as we can tell, James and Peter havent been inspired by each other on this point, but by the Old Testament. In the immediate context of instructing us to humble ourselves, both quote the Greek translation of Proverbs 3:34 . But before we run off to create our own program for self-humbling, we should consider the context in both passages.

    Humility Is Required For Forgiveness

When you are asking for forgiveness from God or even fellow people, you have to humble yourself. There is no way you can go to a person and say something like, I demand you to forgive me and expect to be forgiven. You have to humble yourself, use words like please and I am sorry for you to be forgiven.

Jesus And The Humility Of Children

What Does it Mean to Be Humble?

Christ had special esteem for the weak and lowly. Jesus welcomed children saying, Allow the little children, and dont forbid them to come to me for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these .

He drew attention to the humility of children. In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them, and said, Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn, and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child, the same is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven . Jesus specifically taught us not to devalue or judge children, saying, See that you dont despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven .

God calls us to esteem children as Christ did, to value them as a good gift from God. Behold, children are a heritage of Yahweh. The fruit of the womb is his reward . If we are humble towards children, they will learn humility by our example.

    Humility Is A Commandment

Another thing that makes humility such an important thing is that Christ requires us to be humble. All over the Bible, we see people who were proud, humbled. A good example is Paul when he was Saul the persecutor of Christ’s disciples. He was made blind by God and by the time he was done with that encounter with God, he turned to be one of the most humble people in the Bible. In 1 Corinthians 15:9, he considers himself as the least of the apostles and that he does not even deserve to be called an apostle because he persecuted the church of God.

Humility Gives You A Teachable Spirit

The best way to learn things is to sit down like a fool and listen. You get more from something if you first pretend you dont know anything about it. When you think you know, you will always try to put out your points. This is not helpful as you will only be saying what is already in your mind and not giving your mind a chance to get a different version of the situation. Hence humility makes us more teachable.

    1. Philippians 2: 3-11 : Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 2. James 4:6 : But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
