The indictment of NFL player Adrian Peterson by a Texas grand jury for reckless or negligent injury to a child has generated an extensive discussion in the media on the topic of disciplining children by “spanking,” or corporeal punishment, as commonly practiced in our society. Recent polls indicate that up to 70% of Americans, both Black and White, approve of some form of corporeal punishment of children–with Evangelical Christians coming in at over 85%. 19 States in the USA allow some form of “paddling” in public schools–with Texas leading the pack, having recorded a total of 49,000 incidents in a recent report.
The Peterson case is, of course, extreme–but not necessarily uncommon. He used a “switch,” a slim, leafless tree branch, to beat his 4-year-old son, raising welts on the youngster’s legs, buttocks and scrotum, but millions of Americans–by far the majority of the over-40 generations–can testify to being “spanked,” or in some cases “beaten,” with belts, switches, cords, and other objects that left their markings on legs and buttocks.
Presumably this “calm” and “loving” beating of a child is to be administered to the naked buttocks of a child–which surely raises some other issues in terms of shame, dignity, and personal respect. Accordingly parents are told that such a practice should not be carried into the pre-teen-aged years!
What Does The Bible Have To Say To Parents
If you opened up a Bible to the table of contents and looked for the word parenting, youd probably be disappointed. The Bible doesnt have a section focused on instructions for raising kids. While there are some critical passages for parents, they are not laid out like a blog post. Youre not going to find Five Steps for Trouble-Free Potty Training or Tips for Getting Your Teen to Obey the First Time.
You can find thoughtful encouragement in biblical narratives with good and bad examples of parenting. For example, you can read the story of Isaac and Rebekah and discover insights based on their parenting decisions. But these narratives need to be interpreted before you can understand what they have to say about parenting.
There are also many clear instructions in the Bible that apply directly to parenting your kids. Its essential to recognize that the things that Jesus asks His followers to do are the same principles that make you a good parent. Some of the best pieces of parenting advice youll find in the Bible are the calls to make Jesus the Lord of your life that is, to put him in charge of your life and listen to His commands to lead by serving, to love others as you love yourself and to live in a way that displays the fruit of the Spirit, which is the changes that result in your life from following God and walking in His Spirit .

The First Child Of Promise
And He said, I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son. Genesis 18:10
Shortly before God made this promise to Abraham, He told Abraham he would be the father of many nations . At the time, Abraham assumed God was referring to his first son, Ishmael, that he would be the one to carry on the family line. His assumption was not an unreasonable expectation. Cultural traditions at the time dictated that the oldest son would continue the family bloodline. But God emphatically said that would not be the case this time.
Then God said, No, Sarah, your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, with his descendants after him. Genesis 17:19
It may seem odd that God would choose Isaac and not Ishmael to establish His covenant. But God wasnt looking at cultural laws. His plan was more long-term. His eye was on establishing the bloodline of Jesus, the Savior to come .

THERE ARE NO PERFECT FAMILIES! Let me say that again: THERE ARE NO PERFECT FAMILIES! OK, now that we understand that, lets dive in and see what Gods Word has to say on this subject.
Proverbs 6:20-22 says: My son, keep your fathers commands and do not forsake your mothers teaching. Bind them upon your heart forever fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you when you sleep, they will watch over you when you awake, they will speak to you.
What does that mean? It means that teens need to uphold the wisdom of mom and dad. Parents may just have experiences that give them a better perspective on life, and teens would do well to listen to parents advice.
Ephesians 6:2, 3 says: Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
I love this verse because it gives me a reason to say to my kids, I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it. I know, old joke and not funny. This verse gives us a couple of nuggets for teens and parents. Both sides need to honor each other. Parents, its not just the job of kids to honor us. Teens will understand this better if we demonstrate honor to them. Give them space, and let them know you want to listen to what they have to say. This starts at an early age, way before the teen years. Do the work early so you can reap the harvest later.

Dealing With The Hard
Remember the story of the Pharaoh and Moses in Exodus 5-14. God said He would harden Pharaohs heart. Again, we must look at the original Greek translation, which does not say harden but strengthen. The verb form more specifically means a cooperative effort between God and man.
God strengthened Pharaohs heartHe called to Pharaohbut Pharaoh had already decided he wanted nothing to do with Gods people or their God. So, God gave him what he wanted.
Perhaps you know someone like that, someone who outright wants nothing to do with Jesus.
Does that mean we shouldnt try to share the Gospel with them? Absolutely not.
We may know someone whose heart is so hard against God we might wonder why we should bother telling them about Jesus. And we might be right in our assessment. But we could also be wrong. Only God knows who He is currently calling/inviting, which means we must at least try to share the Gospel with that person. Its what Jesus commanded us to do anyway in Matthew 28:19, where He tells us to make disciples of all nations.
So, if we share the Good News with someone, if they feel God knocking on the door of their heart and respond to it, if they answer the invitation to salvationGod promises they will become His spiritual children of promise.
What is that promise? The promise of eternal life with Him in heaven.

What was life like for children in the ancient Near East? Was it all fun and gamesor mostly work?
Using ancient texts and archaeological remains, Kristine Henriksen Garroway of Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles, reconstructs what life was like for the average child in ancient Israeland throughout the Near East during the Bronze and Iron Ages. In her article Children in the Ancient Near East, published in the November/December 2018 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, she explains that as soon as they were able, children became part of the household economic system. They helped in ways suitable for their age. Thus, their lives were more work and less play than many of us may have envisioned.
Children Of Promise In The New Testament
In Romans 9:8-9, Paul is saying some Jews are elected to salvation as well as some Gentiles, but not everyone, even if they descended directly from Abraham. In his letters, Paul refers to Gods words spoken to Moses in Exodus 33:19 as evidence of his teaching.
I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
Paul then says in Romans 9:16 and 18,
So, then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercyTherefore, He has mercy on whom He wills.
In verse seventeen, Paul quotes from Exodus 9:16 to remind us that God shows His mercy so that His power may reside within His chosen people and that His name is declared across the earth.
God chooses or elects whom He wills to salvation. His decision is made before any of us are born, which means He doesnt base His choice on our good works. God alone decides who will be the children of promise .

The Bible And Your Kids
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
God was explicit in telling the Israelites to pass His law on to their children. The Israelites were to be a people whose lives centered around what they received from the Lord. The message here is that children absorb what they see, so its imperative that theyre raised in an environment where Gods Word is valued and shared. That is what is meant by impressing these things on your children.
This is about more than reading the Bible with your children. This is about having a faith that is so central to everyday life that it comes up naturally all the time. Its a conversational faith that reinforces how and why these things are important to your family.
The admonition to attach symbols to hands, foreheads, doorways and gates reminded the Israelites that their lives revolved around Gods Word. The modern equivalent is to find ways that your childs environment reinforces the truths of Jesus you profess.
