Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor Zechariah 7:10

Children are vulnerable even in good circumstances, but when theres poverty or violence, kids can suffer real damage. The Bible singles out orphans for us to help. Those without fathers are close behind orphans. And children living as refugees or displaced by conflict or living in extreme poverty are also vulnerable. There is no social or financial safety net for them no one to provide for their nurture or needs. God asks people who worship him to help take care of kids in such vulnerable places.

What Does The Bible Have To Say To Parents

If you opened up a Bible to the table of contents and looked for the word parenting, youd probably be disappointed. The Bible doesnt have a section focused on instructions for raising kids. While there are some critical passages for parents, they are not laid out like a blog post. Youre not going to find Five Steps for Trouble-Free Potty Training or Tips for Getting Your Teen to Obey the First Time.

You can find thoughtful encouragement in biblical narratives with good and bad examples of parenting. For example, you can read the story of Isaac and Rebekah and discover insights based on their parenting decisions. But these narratives need to be interpreted before you can understand what they have to say about parenting.

There are also many clear instructions in the Bible that apply directly to parenting your kids. Its essential to recognize that the things that Jesus asks His followers to do are the same principles that make you a good parent. Some of the best pieces of parenting advice youll find in the Bible are the calls to make Jesus the Lord of your life that is, to put him in charge of your life and listen to His commands to lead by serving, to love others as you love yourself and to live in a way that displays the fruit of the Spirit, which is the changes that result in your life from following God and walking in His Spirit .

Then the writer gets to his main teaching: Endure hardship as discipline God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined , then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live .The passage gives a very human illustration: Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness . The point? No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it .

This Proverb is an observation of a general truth. Once again, this is not a command.

This is the fruit of one who is a fool and quite possibly this is talking about a foolish king.

Sowing injustice or iniquity often happens when a foolish son trains for future leadership and comes to power as a ruler or king. There are many examples of this in the Old Testament with the accounts of wicked kings.

Or this could also be saying that those who do bad or wicked things will suffer bad things? In any case, this is not talking about disciplining children.

As a child I was both spanked and put in timeout by my parents, but I know they did it out of love. They didnt want me to grow up to be wicked. They wanted me to stay on the right path.

What Bible Says About Discipline

5-6 My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives as a son. 7 For he disciplines him who wrongs his brother, but he will not chastise him for his iniquity.

8 But if he does wrong to his own son in word or in deed, he shall surely chasten him seven times. 9 For in the same way he who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me and if I lay down my life for the son of man, I will lay it down for him also.

10 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 11 For if you love me, you will keep my commandments. 14 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fear you received the Spirit of adoption as sons.

How Should Christian Parents Discipline Their Children

Parenting is a lifelong journey. It is a tremendous source of blessing, but also an incredibly sanctifying process. For those of you who didnt catch that joke clothed in theological jargon, Im saying that being a parent has a way of revealing what kind of person you really are. Im the father of 5 mostly awesome kids whom I love dearly.

I truly believe as it says in Psalm 127:3 that children are a heritage from the Lord

Unless your were born perfect, youve undoubtedly struggled in the area of how to discipline your children.

Before walking through a few passages that address this topic, lets look at what we mean by discipline. When you think discipline from a Christian perspective, you may think of spiritual disciplines or even church discipline. It is helpful to divide up parental discipline into two categories: formative discipline and corrective discipline.

Children Need Nurture And Guidance

Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6

When planting vines and some bushes, gardeners will attach them to a framework, like a pole or trellis, to keep them from spreading out of control. Kids need solid structure to keep their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual growth on track too. This means we are present in their lives, supporting their growth and development, and leading by our godly example.

Potentially Disciplining In Anger Rather Than Love

First, when you are disciplining your child, you should have first control over yourself.

Then, by us being transformed by the power of Christ, we can bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

This does not mean merely scolding your children in the sense of admonition. It means to train and admonish.

Encouragement and rebuke must be combined with training and teaching.

Training is the same word translated chastening in Hebrews 12:5-11. It has the idea of training through corrective discipline. Admonition has more of the idea of teaching both are necessary, though it may be significant that training comes first. Significantly, both training and admonition are used to describe the purpose of the Scriptures .

Enduring Word Commentary

Parents are to raise their children on the Word of God and correcting them on things that go against the Word of God. This doesnt mean not ever showing grace, or correcting them for every little thing they do.

We are to be wise in what should be disciplined, and what should be given grace for.

I have seen both extremes. One where parents hardly ever disciplined their children and their children did not respect their parents or others in authority.

And another where it felt like they barely even let their child breath without correcting them for something. Both were extreme in their own ways.

We are to pick and choose our battles with our kids, and seek Gods wisdom, for what is really important to correct.

What Does The Bible Say About Childrens Behavior

What Is a Biblical View of How To Discipline My Child?

The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Parents who really love their kids will discipline them, as God does with us. But parents who dont love and discipline their children are not loving and disciplining them in the same way that God loves and disciplines them.

The Bible teaches that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. We are commanded to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you . But the Bible also tells us that if your enemy is hungry, feed him if he is thirsty, give him something to drink for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.

The Bible does not tell us how to discipline our children, but it does teach us what we should do when we do not love them as we ought to. And it teaches us to do this in a loving way, not in an angry or harsh way.

Bible Verses About Parental Discipline

On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found,But a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding.

Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.

Do not hold back discipline from the child,Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die.You shall strike him with the rodAnd rescue his soul from Sheol.

Discipline your son while there is hope,And do not desire his death.

But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

Godly Character Is The Goal

God instituted the family to help us learn about Him. Children learn about God, the Heavenly Father, from their earthly father. It is so much easier for a child to understand their need of salvation when they have a good family unit and they understand consequences for their sin. A child who has been disciplined and understands the consequences of their wrong actions is a child who can easily understand that God will punish sin. A child who never receives discipline in the home will have a harder time understanding and accepting their need of salvation.

This family unit that God ordained teaches children to become productive members of society. They learn how to interact with others and how to behave around authority. These children are the ones whom the boss at work wants to promote because they can be trusted and are good workers. Godly character should be the goal of discipline not just adherence to a list of rules.

Positive & Negative Elements In Parenting

Because we are to model Christ in all that we do for our children, we are to not just discipline as first priority, we are to nurture our children by investing in them.

Obviously a parents love should come naturally for the mother who has been carrying her child in her for 9 months.

We are also to make sure we are showing that love to our children in a way they understand we are there for them no matter what.

No human is perfect therefore no parent is perfect and we will make mistakes along the way.

In our own strength, we will fail again and again. Christ can help us in loving our children to the best of our abilities.

There is a positive element we are to show our children, and a negative element we are to show our children. Without both, we cant fully display Christ and be the parents God calls us to be.

God Wants Us To Train Our Children

We can see that the Lord wants us to train our children, and to teach them His ways.

The Bible says train your children in the way he should go.

Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

As a parent, one is to train their children, so that when they get older they will know right from wrong, and how to live according to the way God has originally intended us to live.

Every child from a young age knows how to do wrong. They dont have take a class on how to lie or misbehave, it is natural for them .

The job of the parent is not to simply let him grow up in any particular way , but to train him in the way he should go.

According to , the way he should go has at least two senses that complement each other.

The Book of Proverbs often presents the concept of the way being the path of wisdom and life in contrast to the way of folly and destruction .

A more literal rendering of the Hebrew at once answers this question. Such translation would be: Train up a child according to his way. In every child there are special and peculiar powers. The true business of training a child therefore, is that of discovering what those powers are, and developing them. Herein is revealed the need for individual work. No two children are alike.

We are to know our children, and because every child is different, each will struggle with different things and excel in different things.
