What Does The Bible Say About True Love

Does God really have the perfect soul mate for you?

People spend years searching for the meaning of true love, but very few turn to the Bible to learn what it has to say about it. The Bible is full of passages about love, and its one of the central themes of scripture. Love is one of the most important virtues of living a Christian life, so we should really be turning to God to understand what it means.

In fact, the Bible says that love is of God and God is love in other words, love is a fundamental characteristic of who God is. Everything God does is influenced by His love. There are different types of love: the love we have for our friends and family, and then romantic love we have for a significant other. The Bible talks about both, and is clear about what romantic true love means.

One of the most beloved passages in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 which states: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. This verse describes the characteristics of true love.

Moving Bible Verses About Loving Others

For Christians, Bible verses about Gods love are a solemn refuge in times of trouble. But Gods love is intertwined with another kind of love: that of loving and serving others. Indeed, if we summarize the contents of the Bible, it all boils down to love for God and for others. One cannot exist without the other. But for this post, well focus on the latter.

When we hear the word love, we tend to think about the romantic kind. But love, especially love for others, comes in all forms and varying degrees. It shows in how we care for our children, respect our parents, and look out for our neighbors and strangers. Its the reason why charity exists and why some people are willing to devote their lives to the service of others. If you think about it, love is essentially the thread that holds our society together.

From the Old to the New Testament, there are tons of bible verses about loving others. Here are some of them:

  • Love is patient and kind love does not envy or boast it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way it is not irritable or resentful it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
  • And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 1 John 4:16
  • Blessed are those who have regard for the weak the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. Psalm 41:1
  • God Disciplines You To Help You Learn Because He Loves You

    40+ Bible Verses About Love

My child, dont reject the LORDs discipline, and dont be upset when He corrects you. For the LORD corrects those He loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights.

Though people often associate discipline with punishment, this verse shows us that Gods discipline is more about training and teaching. That is why Jesus followers were called disciples, or people who follow a teacher.

When you follow Jesus, you become His disciple. In the process of learning from Jesus, some lessons will be hard or even feel like punishment. But God is not out to punish you or hurt you. He is trying to teach you. Your choices have consequences, and God usually allows you to experience those consequences. Facing hard things and overcoming them is one of the best ways to learn.

Dont let yourself get dragged down by hardships or isolate yourself from God and others. Instead, turn to God for help and discover what He is teaching you in the process.

Do Soulmates Exist And What Does The Bible Say About Soulmates

August 19, 2020 By Drew Shepherd

I recently got a question from a fellow Christian about soulmates.

Despite reading my warnings about the danger of soulmate thinking, he still believed it, and it was mostly because of church teaching.

Sure, its easy to reject secular beliefs, but with the way people over-spiritualize the Bible, I understand why he thought the way he did.

Anyways, we talked it over and addressed the issue, but I thought it would be a good idea to cover it here too. A lot of people think destinys reserved one person to share a perfect life with them. So lets look at this idea from both a secular and biblical view.

Love Others As You Love Yourself

Its natural to love yourself. As humans we feed ourselves, clothe ourselves, educate ourselves, work out our bodies, and more. Most people would never knowingly harm themselves. We all want the best for ourselves. Do what you would do to yourself. In your time of need wouldnt you want someone to talk to? Be that someone for someone else. Think about others in the way that you would think about yourself.

    15. John 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so also you must love one another.

    16. Leviticus 19:18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself I am the LORD.

    17. Ephesians 5:28-29 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church.

    18. Luke 10:27 He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and Love your neighbor as yourself.

    19. Matthew 7:12 In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the prophets.

Gods Love Allows You To Change And Grow Into The Person He Wants You To Be

Either way, Christs love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life. He died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.

God loves you just as you are, but He also loves you enough to not let you stay how you are. He wants to see you grow and change for the better. He sent Jesus to die for your sins so this would be possible. When you receive Gods forgiveness and accept Gods help, you can begin to work toward positive, lasting change.

This is another way God acts as a loving parent toward you. Parents love their kids as they are, not just as they want them to be one day. Even if they have a toddler that never listens and regularly has meltdowns in public or a teenager on a rebellious streak, parents still love their kids. At the same time, they want to see their children grow, learn and make good choices in life. Good parents love their kids enough to set limits, give them guidance and walk beside them through the good and the bad.

God does this for you. Once you choose to begin a relationship with God, you experience His forgiveness. This allows you to let go of negative aspects of your personal history and move toward positive change. You also receive His Holy Spirit, who guides you, gives you strength and is present with you every day.

    What Is A Soulmate

Show mercy to others | What does the Bible say about love and compassion

The soulmate concept ranges everywhere from optimal reality to impossible ideal. Thats why we need to define what one actually is.

Dictionary.com defines a soulmate as a person with whom one has a strong affinity, shared values and tastes, and often a romantic bond. So in other words, a soulmate is someone youre compatible with.

But with that said, we all know this isnt what people have in mind when they think of soulmates. In practice, the secular definition is more like a highly-attractive telepath who lives to please you.

This kind of thinking hurts everyone involved, and here are three reasons why:

    #1 Its Narcissistic

    Yes, soulmate thinking is narcissistic.

You might think its innocent since you just want to be loved, but theres the problem: its all about you.

Its about how the other person makes you feel, how attractive you think they are, and how easily they get along with you.

Yes, those are valid concerns, but you have to realize that the other person iswell, a person too. They also have feelings, desires, and goals of their own. And while their compatibility with you is important, no human was put on this earth to please you.

Soulmate thinking puts way too much pressure on the other person. Not only does the one have to look perfect 24/7, they also have to read your mind and be free of any character traits you dont like.

    #2 It Makes You Passive

    #3 It Breeds Discontent

What Does The Bible Say About Love Godly Love

What does the Bible say about falling in love?

If someone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother. 1 John 4:20-21.

Our love for God is not greater than our love for our fellow men. Godly love does not change according to circumstances. It is rooted and grounded.

The tendency is to want the others to change. We feel that it is difficult to love someone as they are and would prefer that they were different. But this is not what the Bible says about love! This is proof that we are more concerned with our own happiness and comfort than with love for the others we are seeking our own.

But what is love? The truth is that instead of hoping for the others to change, we need to find the sin in ourselves and cleanse that out. The self-interest, know-it-all attitude, conceit, stubbornness, etc., the sin that I find when I deal with others in the course of life. If we cleanse ourselves from these things then we can bear, believe, hope, and endure all things from the others. We love them as they are, and we can pray for them out of a sincere Godly love and concern for them.
