Sex before Marriage | Christian Perspective

Dr. Lee Warren is a neurosurgeon who has faced many heavy challenges in his life from serving in the Iraq War to removing deadly brain tumors to experiencing the loss of a teenage son. Hell share about his difficult quest to find answers to some of lifes toughest questions, while holding onto his faith in God and the sure hope of heaven

How Far Is Too Far

Some unmarried Christian couples think its okay to do whatever they want sexually as long as penetration isnt involved. In Gods design, the purpose of sexual touching is to arouse sexual desire and prepare the body for sex. It increases vaginal blood flow and releases a fluid that lubricates the vagina and stimulates an erect clitoris in the woman and erect penis in the man. Having to break it off is immensely frustrating.

Its not wise to get involved in heavy petting such as touching breasts or genitals before marriage. Youre messing with a process God created for married couples intended to end in orgasm. Youre stopping a process in midstream or maybe not because many couples give in and go all the way. Even if youre able to rein it in, your sexual passion creates hormonal memories that bind you to your partner. What if you dont end up getting married? Do you want that person flashing through your mind when youre making love with your spouse?

51. Romans 14:23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

52. Ephesians 5:3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for Gods holy people.

53. Job 31:1 I have made a covenant with my eyes how then could I gaze at a virgin?

54. Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

So Does The Bible Really Say Its Wrong

Before you book a hotel room and call up your girlfriend with the good news, please keep reading! Yes, the Bible does say that all forms of sex outside of marriage are wrong. Heres how.

The early chapters of Genesis give a basic blueprint for marriage, and even though it never says Thou shall not have sex before marriage, it certainly suggests that sex outside of marriage flows against Gods design. Gods command to be fruitful and multiply is joyfully heeded by Adam and Eve after they are joined in marriage . The same goes for their descendants. Noah, Shem, Abram and others all have sex and therefore have children within the confines of a marriage covenant.

When they turn to other women, such as Abrahams sexual relations with Hagar , the act was not considered an affair. Hagar was more like a modern day surrogate mother who bears a child in the place of an infertile wife. Nevertheless, these acts dont appear to be sanctioned by God, even though they were widely accepted in Israels culture.

Throughout the Old Testament, its assumed that God designed sex for marriage. Deuteronomy condemns a soon to be wife who has had sex before marriage , and the love poetry contained in the Song of Songs delights in the joys of sex but reserves it for a husband and wife. Extra-marital sex is never looked upon with divine approval in the Old Testament, no matter how bright the love-flame burns.

Reflecting On Where You Are In Life Right Now What Would You Say To Your Younger Self

What Does the Bible Say About Same

I would say that everything is going to be alright. Dont be so hard on yourself, and allow yourself spaceroom to breathe. I didnt have the luxury when I was growing up to not be in survival mode. People would also say I was “too much” of something. So I would internalize that and be cautious about how I came off to people. I didnt want people to criticize or judge me for simply trusting my own instincts. I’d encourage her to give herself grace and to understand that she is not responsible for other adults’ feelings or behaviors. In my adult life, I have been reparenting myself.

I would say to my younger self, I love you. There are so many people who love you and will love you. Everything will happen for you and dont be stressed out about the how or when. Celebrate the now!

Sex Is For Married Spouses

In many verses about sex in marriageincluding one of the ten commandmentsit is very clear that God does not approve of sex outside of marriage, and also he does not approve sex with partners to which the person is not married. But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul .

In Bible verses about marriage and sex, he goes on to describe the seriousness of this sin. And the man that committeth adultery with another mans wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbors wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death

. But if an adulterer is truly sorry and willing to repent, he will forgive. In John 8, he forgives a woman taken in adultery. Others questioned him, but as she was willing to seek Jesus, he knew she was sorry for the sin.

The Bible is a tremendous spiritual resource as we learn all we must do to follow Jesus Christs teachings. In the holy book, God even offers insight into different aspects of marriage, including sex.

As we study its scripture about sex in marriage, we can more fully apply its principles into our own lives.

What The Bible Says About Specific Sexual Acts

Ok, so I get that Im to have sex with just my husband and that pornography is not honoring God, but as long a both partners are in agreement, is there anything off limits in the bedroom? What about the use of sex toys? Are oral and anal sex allowed?

These are questions that I have heard and discussed with friends. The Bible not does not address these activities, but we have to ask ourselves two key questions:

What does God prohibit in terms of sex in the Christian marriage and what does God allow for?

God does say quite a bit about sex and even Song of Songs celebrates sex in a Christian marriage. And, while His Word doesnt address all of sexual activities that we might consider, we can look to Scripture for answers on what we should avoid and not allow in our marital bed.

Fornication

The word fornication means any unlawful sexual intercourse including adultery. In the Bible, the Greek definition of the word fornication means to commit illicit sexual intercourse. It comes from the Greek word porneia which means unclean. This broad term includes sexual intercourse outside of marriage , sleeping with your stepmother , sex with a prostitute , and adultery .

Adultery:

Adultery occurs when a married person engages in a sexual relationship with someone other than their spouse. The Bible clearly condemns this act: You shall not commit adultery. It violates the commitment made in marriage to be faithful to ones husband or wife. .

Key Passages About Marriage

What Does the Bible Say About Sex And Marriage? | Q& A

Perhaps the most surprising thing the Bible says about marriage is that it should not and will not be experienced by everyone.

In the Old Testament there are many heroes of the faith who were unmarried. Some were unmarried because God forbade them to marry we think of Jeremiah for example. Others were unmarried because they were made eunuchs by hostile foreign powers. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego come to mind in this category.

Jesus spoke about these things in Matthew 19. In answer to the disciples response to his teaching on the permanence of marriage he said:

Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.

Here Jesus seems to be saying that God gives the grace to serve him in whatever capacity he calls people to. If a person is called to celibacy then God gives grace for that. If a person is called to marriage, God gives grace for that as well. The disciple must receive what God gives and do what God requires.

Whatever that it is.

The Apostle Paul was evidently influenced by that teaching. In his chapter long discussion of marriage in 1 Corinthians 7 he says:

I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.

Is Having Sex A Sin According To The Bible

Having sex is not a sin if it is done within the confines of marriage the way God intended it.

That is, a man or a woman can only have sex with another partner to whom they are legally married. Anything outside this is called adultery.

The Bible says thou shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14.

He frowns at couples who are not married legally, yet they live together as husband and wife. He hates those who have sex with inanimate objects or those who engage in any form of sexual perversion.

Whenever sexual intercourse takes place in any of such unholy unions it is a sin.

It will incur the wrath of God. But when marriage is properly covenanted, God will be there to bless such a union and make it fruitful.

The havoc that unholy sex can wreak in the lives of people who engage in it and the society at large is very great.

The Bible gives us an insight into this in Genesis 6:1-5. It breeds wickedness, violence, and all manners of evil, which will bring the judgment of God.

It is the major reason why God destroyed the first world with the flood.

Its one of the reasons God rained fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah and destroyed them. Also, it is one of the reasons why our world today is lurching toward judgment.

God has not made a mistake when He gave us sexual organs. Neither is He being wicked by telling us that we can only explore the pleasure of sex in marriage.

The truth is, that God knows what is best for us.

He simply wants us to obey Him.

Does Having Sex Create A Marriage

However, once married, the religious laws and customs of the time strongly prohibited adultery and provided physical and financial protections for the spouses and their children ” rel=”nofollow”> Exodus 20:14, , , , , , , , , , ).

In today’s world, it is the legal marriage that provides similar protections. Merely having sex or living together does not fulfill the functions of the Biblical model of marriage.

What the Bible Says About Intimacy in Marriage Christian Marriage ...

It is easy to label Jennifer Knust, the author of Unprotected Texts: The Bibles Surprising Contradictions About Sex and Desire, a theological renegade. And she does say the sorts of things in this bookabout premarital sex and abortion and gay marriagethat make conservatives shudder. But in one respect at least, Knust, a School of Theology assistant professor, is a throwback.

Long ago and in a place far away, Christians used to actually fear God. They saw a yawning gap between their limited intelligence and the mind of God. So they were exceedingly careful about presuming what God had to say about almost anything. He who would learn astronomy, and other recondite arts, wrote the Protestant reformer John Calvin, he should go elsewhere than the Biblical text.

Today many supposedly conservative Christians have no trouble pontificating on what Jesus would do about the deficit or what the Bible says about war and peace or sex and the solar system. Knust, who is an ordained American Baptist pastor, thinks that this confidence is not only preposterous, but perhaps idolatrous as well.

We sat down a few days ago, as people increasingly sit down nowadays , to discuss her new book.

None of this would have been possible if Ruth had not set out to seduce Boaz in a field, without the benefit of marriage.

The Bible Forbids Adultery And Values Marriage

The Bible simply doesnt say much specifically about premarital sex. And some of what has been interpreted as applying to premarital sex doesnt really apply to it.

What the Bible does condemn in no uncertain terms is adultery. However, even though premarital sex is traditionally considered fornication, it is not adultery. Adultery is when one or both of the people engaging in sex with one another is married to someone else. Strictly speaking, the commandment Thou shalt not commit adultery does not apply to sex before marriage.

The Bible presents marriage as a relationship that is sacred because from the beginning God created two human beings to be united into one. Based on this, we can conclude that:

  • If the people engaging in premarital sex think there is nothing wrong with promiscuous and adulterous relationships, and just want to sleep around with no restrictions or boundaries, it is a serious issue.
  • But if the people engaging in premarital sex value marriage and want to be in a committed, monogamous relationship, it is not such a serious issue.

Does the Bible give a green light to premarital sex, then?

No, it doesnt.

But it doesnt give a red light either.

Lets take a closer look at the Bibles yellow light on sex before marriage. Then well look at some issues that are worth considering in making decisions about engaging in sex outside of marriage.

Sex Is For Procreation

It was very clear to Adam and Eve what they should be doing after they got married. God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth . And they did, for Adam and Eve had children. And Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she conceived, and bare Cain .

Throughout the Bible, we see other married couples having children, and no doubt, God is pleased with them to bring children into the world. Sarah and Abraham want so badly to have a child, but for some reason, they must wait until their old age to conceive Isaac.

It was hard, but they are faithful and realize the importance of having children. This is how you will find stories about sex in the Bible.

God created sex as a way to bring life into this world, and the creating power men and women have nothing short of miraculous. Becoming parents help us learn and grow in ways that God wants us to learn and grow.

Sex in marriage also allows children to come to earth to experience life here. It is no wonder that sex is a powerful force in our bodies, for it is what helps continue the human race. This is how marriage and sex in the Bible are coupled.
