What Does The Bible Say About Death?

What does the Bible say about masturbation? is one of our most frequently asked questions. Many Christians have found it difficult to answer the question of what the Bible says about masturbation according to the Bible, because the Bible never mentions masturbation specifically. To understand how God feels about this subject, we must examine other verses that deal with issues such as lust, self-control and purity. Also, we must examine its fruit to see if it is from God. We have tried to address this issue by answering some of the most frequently asked questions. Our prayer is that God will use this page to bring freedom and deliverance.

Does God Forgive Suicide

There’s no doubt that suicide is a terrible tragedy. For a Christian, it is an even greater tragedy because it is a waste of a life that God intended to use in a glorious way.

It would be difficult to argue that suicide is not a sin, for it is the taking of a human life, or to put it bluntly, murder. The Bible clearly expresses the sanctity of human life .

God is the author and giver of life . Scripture says God breathed the breath of life into humans . Our lives are a gift from God. Thus, the giving and taking of life ought to remain in his sovereign hands .

In Deuteronomy 30:11-20, you can hear the heart of God crying out for his people to choose life:

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life…â

So, can a sin as grave as suicide destroy one’s chance of salvation?

The Bible tells us that at the moment of salvation a believer’s sins are forgiven . When we become a child of God, all of our sins, even those committed after salvation, are no longer held against us.

The Apostle Paul made it plain in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing can separate us from God’s love:

Arguments For And Against Capital Punishment

Some proponents of capital punishment see it as mandated by the Old Testament Law. However, Christians are no longer bound by the legal code of Old Testament Law. The argument of a Biblical mandate for capital punishment is also contradicted by the fact that many of the capital crimes in the Old Testament are considered relatively minor today. Very few people in the Christian world would support capital punishment for such things as doing work on the Sabbath, false prophecy or making false statements about a woman’s virginity.

Many proponents of capital punishment interpret the phrase, “authority does not bear the sword in vain!” in as New Testament authority for capital punishment. However, the point of this passage is that Christians must not use their freedom from the Old Testament religious Law as an excuse to violate the civil law. We must obey civil authority, which is instituted by God, because of fear of punishment as well as conscience .

Opponents of capital punishment see it as exactly the kind of revenge and human judgment that Jesus and His apostles so often warned against. They believe the principles set forth by Jesus and the apostles restrict punishment to only that which is necessary to protect society .

You Can Kill But Dont Murder

Ask almost anyone to recite the commandment in the Ten Commandments that prohibits taking a life, and you will be told, Thou shalt not kill.

That is the King James translation of the Sixth Commandment. Overall, it is a magnificent translation. But this one has led to much moral confusion.

Yesterday, PragerUniversity.com, which has had more than 20 million views this year, released eleven courses the Ten Commandments and an introduction.

The reason we made these video courses is that I believe that everything we need to make a good world and rid ourselves of evil is contained in the Ten Commandments.

For the next few weeks, my column will be selected transcripts of the courses, all of which I present.

Whatever your faith, or if you have no faith, I invite you to watch the videos at www.prageru.com the introduction and the Ten Commandments, or any one of the Ten. They are cleverly animated with text and graphics.

Here is the text of Commandment Six explaining why the King James translation is wrong:

You would think that of all the Ten Commandments, the one that needs the least explaining is the Sixth, because it seems so clear. It is the one that the King James Bible, the most widely used English translation of the Bible, translates as Thou shall not kill.

The difference between the two is enormous. Kill means:

1) Taking any life whether of a human being or an animal.

2) Taking a human life deliberately or by accident.

Justified Killing: Due Consequence For Crime

What Does the Bible Say About Life and Death? Watchtower ...

The Torah and Hebrew Bible made clear distinctions between the shedding of innocent blood versus killing as the due consequence of a crime. A number of sins were considered to be worthy of the death penalty including murder, incest, bearing false witness on a capital charge, adultery, idolatry, bestiality, child sacrifice to pagan gods, cursing a parent,fortune-telling, homosexuality, and other sins.

For example, the Exodus narrative describes the people as having turned to idolatry with the golden calf while Moses was on the mountain receiving the law from God. When Moses came down, he commanded the Levites to take up the sword against their brothers and companions and neighbors. The Levites obeyed and killed about three thousand men who had sinned in worship of the golden calf. As a result, Moses said that the Levites had received a blessing that day at the cost of son and brother. On a separate occasion, a blasphemer was stoned to death because he blasphemed the name of the Lord with a curse.

The Hebrew Bible has many other examples of sinners being put to death as due consequence for crimes. Achan is put to death by Joshua because he caused defeat of Israel’s army by taking some of the plunder and hiding it in his tent. David ordered that an Amalekite be put to death because he claimed to have killed King Saul. Following the advice of his father, Solomon ordered that Joab be killed:

When Does Human Life Begin

God views human life as beginning at conception. In his Word, the Bible, God consistently portrays an unborn child as a distinct person. Consider some examples indicating that God does not draw a distinction between the life of a baby in the womb and one that has been born.

  • Under divine inspiration, King David said to God: Your eyes even saw me as an embryo. God considered David to be a person even before he was born.

  • Additionally, God knew that he would have a special purpose for the prophet Jeremiah before Jeremiahs birth. God said to him: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I sanctified you. I made you a prophet to the nations.Jeremiah 1:5.

  • The Bible writer Luke, a physician, used the same Greek word to describe an unborn baby as he did to describe a newborn baby.Luke 1:41 2:12, 16.

The Antithesis Of Murder

Jesus not only forbids the act of murder, He forbids the attitude of murder. A Christian must forsake his right for revenge in action and in thought. Hatred, contempt, and anger are as murder to us. We must replace our anger with love. We must replace our contempt with compassion.

  • Do you hate anyone? Dislike anyone?
  • Is there someone you refuse to speak to?
  • Who are you harboring a grudge against?
  • Does anyone have something against you?

Humbly ask God to give you the strength to seek reconciliation. Make it a priority. It might not be easy, but peacemakers are powerful witnesses for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bible Verses About Murder

Exodus 20:13 – Thou shalt not kill.Matthew 5:21-26 – Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: Romans 12:19 – Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine I will repay, saith the Lord.1 John 3:12 – Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.1 John 3:15 – Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.Revelation 21:8 – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.Matthew 26:52-54 – Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

Scripture Mandates Capital Punishment

What does the Bible say about death?

The principal argument is that because life is sacred, those who wrongfully take another human life must lose their own lives. This is a form of restitution a matter of justice the state purging itself of those who shed innocent blood. Proponents of this position cite three scriptural arguments:

ARGUMENT 1Genesis 9:6 says, “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed for in the image of God has God made man.” This is part of the larger covenant that God made with Noah after the flood. It not only reflects the great value of human life, but also gives the reason for that value: Man is made in God’s image. The absolute language of Genesis 9:6 suggests that all those who kill another human being must be killed. And since this mandate was given long before the Mosaic Law to all who survived the flood, it apparently has universal application.

ARGUMENT 2The Law, as given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, ordained execution for several offenses: murder , striking or cursing a parent, kidnapping, adultery, incest, bestiality, sodomy, rape of a betrothed virgin, witchcraft, incorrigible delinquency, breaking the Sabbath, blasphemy, sacrificing to false gods, oppressing the weak, and other transgressions.

Every Day Religious Questions: What Does The Bible Say About Killing

Q: The Commandments say, Thou shall not kill. We are told God killed the first born in every Egyptian family and assisted the Hebrew people in killing so that they could take over the promised land. Please explain.

Answer: Although generally translated, Thou shall not kill, the Commandment actually states, Thou shall not commit murder.

The killing of children in the Old Testament is contrasted with Jesus attention to children in Matthew 19 saying that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such. In Matthew 15, He exhorted His followers to have the faith of a child.

He commanded us not only to refrain from killing our enemies but to do good to them. On the matter of the death penalty, Jesus said that the executioners should be sinless. This was Jesus repudiation of capital punishment. Killing a person who committed a crime is retributive justice of the Old Testament. When we approve of killing, we are seeking revenge and sinking to the level of the criminals. We should find ways to keep communities safe without killing law breakers. If we continue to call for a death penalty, then we must follow Jesus requirement spoken in John 8:3-12 that those who judge be without sin. There is clearly a distinction to be noted between the Old and New Testaments. We can read and study both and find important guidance but, as Christians, the most important question will always be how can we become true followers of Jesus?

The Sanctity Of Life In The Quran

We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.

Allah has discussed the importance of life in various surahs of the Quran. The above verse in Surah al-Maidah is one of the most emphatic statements to uphold the sanctity of life in any scripture. Allah unequivocally states that one life, if taken, is equivalent to all human life. Hence, one doesnt need to imagine anything to understand the sanctity of life according to Allah. Reading this alone tells us that if we engage in a crime as heinous as murder, Allah will hold us to account for our sin.

Do not take a human lifemade sacred by Allahexcept with legal right.

Killing and murder is one of the first things Allah will hold us to account for on the Day of Judgment. Taking someones life for no reason is a major sin. Actions from the Sunnah also point toward the importance of life.

O you who have believed, do not consume one anothers wealth unjustly but only business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves . Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.

How Muslims View Murder

The Islamic texts clearly and unequivocally state that murder is a great crime. Hence, all Muslims must view it as an abhorrent sin. Sadly, many Muslims are guilty of not knowing their own religion. Some of them dont study it at all and are Muslim in name only. Others follow ideologies that are contrary to Islam and its teachings. As a result, many Muslims may not even be aware that Islam strictly prohibits murder and legislates a strong punishment for it.

If anyone reads the Islamic texts that discuss murder, it should have a considerable effect on them. Just as knowledgeable Muslims hate the sin of shirk, adultery, etc., they should also despise murder. Therefore, it is an obligation upon a Muslim state to take all this into account. There are laws against murder, which we will get into later. The authorities must implement these to ensure that no one gets away with such an act.

The Catholic Church And Capital Punishment

What does the Bible say about Murder?

Throughout the first half of the twentieth century the consensus amongst Catholic theologians remained in favour of capital punishment in those cases deemed suitably extreme. Until 1969, the Vatican had a penal code that included the death penalty for anyone who attempted to assassinate the Pope.

However, by the end of this century opinions were changing. In 1980, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops published an almost entirely negative statement on capital punishment, approved by a majority vote of those present, though not by the required two-thirds majority of the entire conference.

In 1997 the Vatican announced changes to the Catechism, thus making it more in line with John Paul II’s 1995 encyclical The Gospel of Life. The amendments include the following statement concerning capital punishment:

War Stuff Was Just An Old Testament Thing

  • Paul warns us in Romans 13:4, that the ruler is Gods servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out Gods wrath on the wrongdoer. Understand then, that the New Testament validates killing at least in the capacities of a soldier and/or police officer.
  • Jesus, Paul, Luke, etc. never disagree with the calling of the soldier or police officer, they just dont want them to be corrupt soldiers and cops, and in some cases these fighters are highly praised by them. Consider: Acts 10 Luke 3:14 Matthew 8:5-13 2 Timothy 2:3 1 Corinthians 9:7
  • In Revelation 19:11-16, we see Jesus transfigured and super awesome/scary. Jesus did not come to the earth to judge, but He is coming back to judge. When He comes back, it is with a sword to do terrible violence.

What Does The Bible Say About Shedding Innocent Blood

Shedding innocent blood is murder. There are a few Bible passages that shed light on this matter.

There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers, .

Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked, .

Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity desolation and destruction are in their highways. The way of peace they do not know, and there is no justice in their paths they have made their roads crooked no one who treads on them knows peace, .

I know this is a controversial topic today, but abortion is the shedding of innocent blood. Think about it. The baby in the womb did nothing to deserve death, and yet, is being murdered. Most of the time, due to inconvenience on the womens part.
