Nonpersonal Lawsuits: Should S Christian Sue A Company

What Does the Bible Say About Lawsuits?

Larry Burkett

Although in part one of “Should a Christian Sue?” we concluded that it would not be a good example of Christ-like character for a Christian to sue another individual, is the same standard advised in dealing with a business, corporation, or insurance company? Many lawsuits are initiated because of personal loss suffered due to the negligence or deceit of a company or business. Should Christians pursue such matters into the secular courts?

Larry writes in his book, Business by the Book, “Since there were no corporations in existence when the Bible was written, the best we can do is relate the principle to the closest parallel of that time: a government agency.

“It seems clear from the book of Acts that Paul recognized both the authority and the responsibility of the government of Rome. Twice, when he was falsely arrested, he relied on application of Roman law to regain his freedom. He also clearly used the implied threat of using that law to punish his antagonists . When he was falsely accused by the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem and jailed by the Roman authorities he appealed to the law of Rome to defend himself. The Roman government was an entity, not a person, so Paul felt he was clearly within his rights to use Roman law against that entity.” 1

Forgiving Others Unlocks Forgiveness For You

Ultimately, any discussion about forgiveness will ultimately circle back around to Jesus Himself. Through His work on the cross, Jesus purchased forgiveness for all of us who accept Him. But accepting that forgiveness requires that we forgive others, too.

Jesus makes this clear in the parable of the unmerciful servant, which you can find in Matthew 18:21-35. The whole passage is worth a read, but lets focus on verses 32-35, where the Master chastises a servant who was forgiven a huge debt, but then ruthlessly pursued a fellow servant for a small sum of money.

32 Then the master called the servant in. You wicked servant, he said, I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldnt you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you? 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.

Here, we see two things clearly: God forgives us our debts, and He expects us to do the same.

If you have loaned money to someone and are considering what to do next, understanding what the Bible says about forgiving debt should make a big impact on your decision. God forgives us infinitely, and He expects us to do the same for others.

People Committed Suicide In The Bible

Let’s begin by looking at the seven accounts of suicide in the Bible.

Abimelech

After having his skull crushed under a millstone that was dropped by a woman from the Tower of Shechem, Abimelech called for his armor-bearer to kill him with a sword. He did not want it said that a woman had killed him.

Judas

After he betrayed Jesus, Judas Iscariot was overcome with remorse and hung himself.

In each of these instances, except that of Samson, suicide in the Bible is presented in an unfavorable light. These were ungodly men acting in desperation and disgrace. Samson’s case was different. And while his life was not a model of holy living, Samson was honored among the faithful heroes of Hebrews 11. Some consider Samson’s final act to be an example of martyrdom, a sacrificial death that allowed him to fulfill his God-assigned mission. Whatever the case, we know that Samson was not condemned by God to hell for his actions.

Can A Christian Sue Non

Does the Bible say anything about lawsuits / suing?

In 1 Corinthians 6:8 Paul clearly rebukes them for suing even your brethren. Then he writes, You do this even to your brethren. The message is simple, Christians are not to sue others for personal gain. The Jewish religious leaders taught that vengeance was okay. But in Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus corrected their false teaching. Here are Jesus words,

You have heard that it was said, AN EYE FOR AN EYE, AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. Matthew 5:38-42

Here Jesus quoted the teaching of the Pharisees and then says, But I say . . . Notice that Jesus says we are not to resist an evil person and him who slaps us. In fact, if someone wants to sue us, we are to give them what they want and give them more than they ask. If they ask us to go one mile, then we are to go two miles. The point is that a Christian is not to be self-centered. Jesus gave us the principle that Christians are not to sue. Can I sue someone because I have been hurt? If you are a Christian, the answer is, No!

Lying Is A Spiritual Battle

I wrote this prayer when a friend lost a devastating lawsuit because the accuser was such a convincing liar. My friend and his family were in absolute shock because they had hoped that the truth would be apparent to the jury. I struggled as I attempted to pray for this situation and began looking into what the Bible has to say about those who tell lies.

The more I researched the more alarmed I became at how diabolical lying can be. Lying is a spiritual battle and not an easy thing to endure or combat. It is truly spiritual warfare and very destructive to individuals, families, churches and businesses.

The Bible is full of instances of lying people who pervert justice. Truth telling is the cornerstone of faith and community. The Ten Commandments say, You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. In fact, in the Garden of Eden, mankind fell because they believed a lie about God told by the devil.

Does Filing A Lawsuit Make You A Bad Christian

While our clients come to us with many concerns, a common question is, “Can a Christian sue?” 1 Corinthians 6:1-8 deals directly with the possibility of one Christian suing another Christian. The scripture poses the question of pursuing a claim against brothers and sisters when “you yourselves cheat and do wrong.”

The verses contemplate taking disputes against other Christians to a court of law “before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people.” It makes clear that when there are “lawsuits among Christians, you have been completely defeated already.” Yet, the Bible also commands, “Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits.

Is It Biblical To Sue Someone: Key Takeaway

There is no room for justifying a Christian taking another Christian to court. They do not love one another as Christ loved the church. They do not love their neighbor as themselves. They may not have even passed from death to life . It defiles the reputation not only of the church but of Jesus Christ Himself Who is Head of the church. God associates this type of sin with sexual immorality and this type of sin is committed by those who will not inherit eternal life . The conclusion is that Christians are commanded to not sue one another but settle the issue in the church since Christians will be reigning with Christ someday. How can they expect to reign in the coming Kingdom of God when they can not even settle issues with each other? God forbid.

The Biblical Pattern For Settling Conflicts

Matthew 18:15-17 provides the biblical pattern for settling conflicts within the church:

  • Go directly and privately to the brother or sister to discuss the problem.
  • If he or she does not listen, take one or two witnesses.
  • If he or she still refuses to listen, take the matter to the church leadership.
  • If he or she still refuses to listen to the church, expel the offender from the fellowship of the church.
  • If you have followed the steps in Matthew 18 and the problem is still not resolved, in some cases going to court might be the right thing to do, even against a brother or sister in Christ. We say this cautiously because such actions should be the last resort and decided only through much prayer and godly counsel.

Atp: What Does The Bible Say About Lawsuits

This is a question often asked. Many people are confused because they have heard that the Bible says, “Christians are not to sue.” Is this what the Bible really says. Let’s look at this subject from God’s perspective and not go on “hear say.”

The position that Christians should not sue is based on a verse found in 1 Corinthians 6. It reads:

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? ~1 Cor. 6:7

To understand what the apostle is saying to the Christian, one must look at the entire passage beginning with verse one. So let’s start there.

If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church! I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother goes to law against another–and this in front of unbelievers!

In other words, as Christians we should not be taking civil issues to court.
