All Of These Are Better In The Logos Bible Software Bible Factbook

OK, this one is technically in a grey area in terms of the Bible dictionarium. The Bible Factbook is a feature in my favorite Bible study software, and the way its set up would make it nigh impossible to ever print.

And thats precisely why I couldnt let myself write up a list of Bible encyclopedias without mentioning it.

The Bible Factbook is tied to Logos Bible Softwares data on the people, places, things, concepts, and themes in the Bible. That means you can enter in a character, say, Michael the archangel, and get not one article, but a smart list of everything in your library about the warrior angel.

But it doesnt stop there. Thanks to Logos tagging system, you can see:

  • The events in the biblical narrative Michael plays a part in
  • The ways the Bible refers to him
  • The words in the original language that refer to him
  • All the media in your library thats related to Michael
  • And of course, this just leads to more on-ramps to biblical knowledge.

Some downsides to the Logos Bible Factbook:

As is the case with all things Logos Bible Software, the tool is only as good as the person wielding it. The Factbook is essentially a search engine for your Logos library. It pulls in all the encyclopedic info on the stuff youre looking up.

That means Logos does a TON of heavy lifting, but its often still on you to make sense of the results.

For example, did you notice a weird entry in the screenshot above?

And how many hits did that turn up in the Bible? Zero?

Miklal Software Solutions Inc Bible Dictionary Book

We are personally inclined towards Miklal Software Solutions, Inc. bible dictionary book, it is bit pricy, but it overachieves its purpose and long time functional. The Miklal Software Solutions, Inc. bible dictionary book is not available on first generation kindles and might not be available on kindle applications. Third, you can navigate directly to a particular glossary entry by clicking on index in the menu and typing in the letter h followed by the strongs number for that entry. The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia Revised

    10 Best Bible Dictionaries 2020

HEADS-UP: if youre of the more progressive theological persuasion, you may want to skip to #4.

This is the standard when it comes to conservative Bible dictionaries, folks. Its thorough. And if you want to blend observation with conservative interpretation, this is a rather educating shortcut.

The ISBE is admittedly the Bible dictionary I use least out of those listed here. However, I find it a good place to dig deeper than Bakers Encyclopedia of the Bible goes.

One strength for conservative readers is that ISBE is a teaching resource: it does some of the interpretation for you. That means youre not necessarily left with the information to put together yourself. Instead, the articles are written in a way to show you a generally accepted conservative understanding of a topic .

Of course, with this strength comes a weakness: The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia can be dogmatic here and there. Ive found some articles to feel more like scholarly arguments than descriptions. Take, for example, this line from the article on Creation:

But this isnt the case throughout.

In fact, some articles balance different points of view on particularly disputed topics. While the article on Creation is in favor of theistic evolution , the article on women in church leadership explores multiple viewpoints based on some of the more prominent Scriptures used in that conversation.

Overall, its a helpful resource that gives you a lot of information on any biblical topic.

    Research Before You Buy

One of the best ways to research is to talk to people about their favorite Bibles. Ask them to explain which features they like most and why. For example, a site-reader, Jo, offered this advice: “The Life Application Study Bible, New Living Translation rather than New International Version , is the best Bible I’ve ever owned. Even my ministers have liked the translation. I think the NLT is easier to understand than the New International Version, and it costs considerably less.”

Ask Christians teachers, leaders, and believers you admire and respect about which Bibles they use. Get input from different points of view while carefully keeping in mind what’s most important to you. When you take time to research, you’ll gain the confidence and knowledge needed to make an informed decision.

But first, what is an exegetical commentary, exactly? Heres a brief description of these Bible study resources:

Exegetical commentaries bridge the gap between and expositional commentaries. Typically, they go verse by verse through a passagestill including critical issues, but selectively. Zondervan Exegetical Commentary On The New Testament

The Zondervan Pictorial Bible Dictionary bu Merrill C ...

Each of its 10 volumes gives you an exegetical outline with verse-by-verse commentary. It engages scholarly literature, but its not bogged down with technical jargonthe series aim is not to review and critique every possible interpretation of a passage.

Instead, the goal is to exegete each passage of Scripture succinctly in its grammatical and historical context. Each passage is interpreted in light of its biblical setting with attention to grammatical detail, literary context, flow of biblical argument, and historical setting.

The ZECNT is a go-to commentary for many pastors. Heres why, from Logos user Brett K.:

Im sad when Im speaking from a book that has yet to have a ZECNT commentary. I love that this series is meant specifically for pastors. It utilizes basic to moderate knowledge of Greek, but you dont need them to understand the work. I also appreciate that there is a Semantic diagram of the passage in English to show the thought flow of the author. Each commentary is quite succinct so you dont end up reading more information than necessary. I think this is part of their goal to equip pastors and teachers rather than focus on academic debates.

List Of The Best Translations Of The Bible

    10 Best Bible Dictionaries 2019

The best translations of the Bible are mostly well-known, but there are also a few that are not so well-known. Scholars regard Word-for-Word as most accurate translation method that leaves the least room for error.

Thought-by-Thought and Paraphrase are much more readable, but they have been criticized because these translations can begin to interpret the Bible rather than only translating it.
