Chapters And Verses Of The Bible

The middle verse of the Bible

The chapter and verse divisions did not appear in the original texts they form part of the paratext of the Bible. Since the early 13th century, most copies and editions of the Bible present all but the shortest of these books with divisions into chapters, generally a page or so in length. Since the mid-16th century, editors have further subdivided each chapter into verses each consisting of a few short lines or sentences. Esther 8:9 is the longest verse in the Bible. Sometimes a sentence spans more than one verse, as in the case of Ephesians 2:89, and sometimes there is more than one sentence in a single verse, as in the case of Genesis 1:2.

The Jewish divisions of the Hebrew text differ at various points from those used by Christians. For instance, in Jewish tradition, the ascriptions to many Psalms are regarded as independent verses or parts of the subsequent verses, whereas established Christian practice treats each Psalm ascription as independent and unnumbered, making 116 more verses in Jewish versions than in the Christian. Some chapter divisions also occur in different places, e.g. Hebrew Bibles have 1 Chronicles 5:2741 where Christian translations have 1 Chronicles 6:115

Stephen Langton divided the Bible into chapters about A.D. 1228. The Old Testament was divided into verses by R. Nathan in A.D. 1448, and Robert Stephanus divided the New Testament into verses in A.D. 1551. The first complete Bible with chapter and verse divisions was the Geneva Bible of A.D. 1560.

What Did Jesus Say Was The Most Important Thing

Jesus answered, The most important is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

What Is The Middle Verse Of The Bible

According to independent research, the King James Version of the Holy Bible contains 1189 chapters Psalm 117 is the 595th there are 594 chapters before Psalm 117, and 594 after it. Thus, it is 117, not 118, that is the center chapter of the Bible.

The KJV has an even number of verses and, thus, does not have a single middle verse. The middle verses are Psalm 103:1-2, with 15,550 verses before and after.

Psalms 103: 1-2: A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

There are small variations in the number of verses from one Bible version to another. The order of the books in the Bible was not settled until the 4th century, the Hebrew Old Testament puts the books in a different order than that used by Christians, and the division into chapters and verses was done between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Since the Bible wasnt divided into chapters and verses until hundreds of years after its completion, and since not all Bibles have the books in the same order, this is a pointless discussion.

Versions Of The Bible

What is the middle verse of the Bible?

While fun facts like these draw our attention to certain verses, the “center of the Bible” statistics are not applicable to every version of the Bible. Why not? Catholics use one version of the Bible, and Hebrews use another. Some experts have calculated Psalm 117 as the center of the King James Version of the Bible, while others state that there is no central verse of the Bible due to an even number of verses.

Getting Bible Facts Straight

Think of it like this:

You say to your mom, Hey, Mom, where are the Ten Commandments written in the Bible, because I dont really believe that God says I have to honor my father and mother.

Which response will make your moms life easier?

  • Option A: It is in the second scroll of MosesProphet who led Israel out of Egypt to the Promised Land and received the law at Sinai More. Unroll the scroll about 65 centimeters, then look about halfway down on the left side of the column. I think your father spilled some egg salad therethey start right next to the stain.
  • Option B: Exodus, chapter 20. The honoring parents commandment is verse 12.
  • Option C: Go to your room. You can come out when you are ready to be respectful or when you get really, really hungrywhichever comes first.

OK, we would all go with C, but you have to admit that B is easier than A.

And that is why the chapter and verse numbers were put in the Bible. To make it more convenient for mothers to shut up their kids. And to help people locate passages that they want to keep track of and read.

Why Psalm : 8 Is Not The Middle Verse Of The Bible

Web sites, e-mails, and regrettably even some Bibles assert that Ps 118:8 is the middle verse of the Bible. But as demonstrated below the claim is incontestably false.

Failure to exercise the prudent care exemplified by the Bereans and charged of the Thessalonians only assists and supports the inroads of false doctrine and traditions of men into the life and local church of the Christian. The false claim about Ps 118:8 as the middle of the Bibleand the propagation of this claimproves that point perfectly. This paper is a reproof of such negligence. It is a call to diligence.

CLAIM: Which chapter is the shortest chapter of the Bible? Psalm 117.

That statement is true. Psalm 117 consists of two verses.

CLAIM: Which chapter is the longest chapter of the Bible? Psalm 119.

True. Psalm 119 consists of 176 verses.

CLAIM: Which chapter is the center chapter of the Bible? Psalm 118.

False. Over against the longer Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox canons, the common Protestant canon consists of 1,189 chapters. The middle chapter of the common Protestant canon is Psalm 117.

CLAIM: There are 594 chapters before Psalm 118.

False. In the common Protestant canon 595 chapters precede Psalm 118.

CLAIM: There are 594 chapters after Psalm 118.

False. In the common Protestant canon 593 chapters follow Psalm 118.

CLAIM: Combine 594 with 594 and you get 1188.

CLAIM: Which verse is the center of the Bible? Ps 118:8.

That statement is false by reason of the following:

It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man .

What, or Who, is literally at the very heart of the King James Bible?

The King James Bible has 31,101 verses. Verse number 15,551the middle verseis todays Scripture: It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. If you notice, there are 14 words in this verse, and the middle words are the LORD . Modern versions, because they remove dozens of verses from the Bible text, do not have todays Scripture as their middle verse. Their middle verse does not urge us to put our trust in the LORD and avoid trusting man. Nay, the modern version translators want us to trust their judgment, that they have improved Gods Word .

If you listen to the average Bible teacher or preacher, read the average Bible commentary, or use the average study Bible, you will be advised to doubt the readings in the King James Bible. Scholarship, driven by the minds of lost people, always has a better translation than the one the Holy Spirit already chose. There is a constant push to make the King James Bible more scholarly, more agreeable to theologians and textual critics. Dear friends, if we say that we are not interested in opinions, but only interested in what the Bible says, then it is silly to offer opinions about what the Bible should say instead, and it is even more foolish to accept opinions about what the Bible should say instead.

Psalm 34:45, 8

The Center Of The Bible

Bible Verse of the Day Bellringer Warm Ups

The truth is there are 31,102 verses in the King James Bible. Therefore there is no single middle verse. You cannot have a middle verse with an even number of verses. However there are two middle verses. These would be verses 15,551 and 15,552

PSALM 103:1-2

BLESS the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

These are the middle two verses of the King James Bible. Both verses start with Bless the LORD, O my soul. Verse 1 continues and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Verse 2 concludes with and forget not all his benefits. These are powerful words coming from the two center verses of the Book.

Now lets count the words in these two middle verses. There are twenty-eight. Thats seven quadrupled instead of seven doubled Here we have seven compounded twice as much.

Now lets see if we can find some middle words in the center of Gods middle verses. Yes, I see four There are twelve words on one side of this phrase and twelve words on the other side. So the King James Bible has blesshis holy name right in the center of the two middle verses!

that Psalm 118 is not the middle chapter. Since there are 594 chapters from Genesis 1 to Psalm 116 and 594 chapters from Psalm 118 to Revelation 22, that makes Psalm 117 the middle chapter.

And since Psalm 117 also has the distinction of being the shortest chapter in the Bible, with only two verses, that means there is no middle verse using the chapter fulcrum.

So the two middle verses are: Oh, praise the Lord, all you Gentiles! Laud Him, all you peoples! For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord!

Hey, not too shabby thoughts either!

Then somebody claims that the KJV Bible has an even number of verses: 31,174. Using verses rather than chapters brings us back to Psalm 118:8-9.

But wait, it turns out people using computerized programs come up with disagreeing numbers for how many words in the KJV Bible. Maybe the most accepted one is based on the 1769 edition of the 1611 KJV, coming up with total of 31,102 words.

Bible study can be more fun if you break up your study with some fun trivia. Do you know, for example, what Bible chapter and verse is at the very center of the Bible? Here’s a clue in the first few words of the center chapter:

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good his love endures forever.Let the house of Aaron say:His love endures forever.Let those who fear the Lord say:His love endures forever. When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?The Lord is with me he is my helper.I look in triumph on my enemies. It is better to take refuge in the Lordthan to trust in humans. It is better to take refuge in the Lordthan to trust in princes.

The Central Chapter Of The Bible: Psalms 118

The fact can be argued depending on what Bible version you are using, but by most reckoning, the very center of the Bible when measured by chapter count is Psalms 118.

Here are some other fun facts surrounding Psalm 118:

  • The longest chapter of the Bible falls just after this center chapter– Psalm 119.
  • The shortest chapter of the Bible falls just after this center chapter– Psalm 117.
  • There are exactly 594 chapters before Psalm 118, and exactly 594 chapters after it. When you add the number of chapters before Psalms 118 and those after, the sum is 1,118. And the verse at the very center of the Bible is Psalms 118:8.

So What Is The Center Verse In The Bible

Bible Prophecy in the Middle East – Introduction

The previous three paragraphs expose this question as significantly flawed. The correct question is, “What is the center verse in my particular translation of the Bible?” The answer to this question depends on how many verses constitute the body of your Bible. Generally, in English printings of the common Protestant canon either the middle verse ranges from Ps 102:18 to Ps 103:2 or the center falls between two verses .

However, all such calculated midpoints in our English Bible are practically meaningless. For not only is the current verse division in the NT extrinsic to the autographs but also virtually no English printing of the common Protestant canon follows either the book order or verse division of the Tanakh, namely the Masoretic text.”Knowing the history of our current verse divisions should prevent us from engaging in creative biblical mathematics, claiming divine meaning behind current verse numbers.”

For example, see Ray Comfort, comp., The Way of the Master Evidence Bible , 788 The New Defender’s Study Bible , 924.

All such calculations within this paper have been double-checked for accuracy the present writer bears the full responsibility for them.

These numbers are verifiable by manual count and with BibleWorks 8, DVD-ROM . That translations and editions differ on the number of verses in 2 Corinthians 13, 3 John, and Revelation 12 has been taken into account.

For example, Matt 17:21 Mark 9:44 Luke 23:17 John 5:4 Acts 8:37 Rom 16:24.

The Chapter And Verse Numbers Are Not Inspired Authoritative Or Part Of Gods Word

Aside from all of this information being incredibly thrilling trivia, which will make you the hit of the next party you attend, there is also an important theological point herethe chapter and verse numbers are not even really part of the Bible, just like the page numbers arent. This means two things. First, they are not authoritative. Second, there is no meaning in them.

First, the numbers are not authoritative! Here is a lame joke: The person who added the verse numbers to the text was riding in a carriage when doing so. Sometimes the horse would jump just as the person was about to write, with the result that the numbers at times are in poorly chosen places. Consider Genesis 2:1-5, as these verses are laid out in most translations:

So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creationCreation, in biblical terms, is the universe as we know or perceive it. Genesis says that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. In the book of Revelation the author declares that God created all things and… More. 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 5 when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung upfor the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground

The Bible has only one center: Jesus Christ.
