What Method Did The Translators Use In Making The Nlt

005. New Living Translation Bible Back Story (Dr. John Oswalt)

The translators of the New Living Translation set out to render the message of the original texts of Scripture into clear, contemporary English. As they did so, they translated as simply and literally as possible when that approach yielded an accurate, clear, and natural English text. Many words and phrases were rendered literally and consistently into English, preserving essential literary and rhetorical devices, ancient metaphors, and word choices that give structure to the text and provide echoes of meaning from one passage to the next.

On the other hand, the translators rendered the message more dynamically when the literal rendering was hard to understand, was misleading, or yielded archaic or foreign wording. They clarified difficult metaphors and terms to aid in the readers understanding. The translators first struggled with the meaning of the words and phrases in the ancient context then they rendered the message into clear, natural English. Their goal was to be both faithful to the ancient texts and eminently readable. The result is a translation that is both exegetically accurate and idiomatically powerful. More than 90 Bible scholars, along with a group of accomplished English stylists, worked closely together toward that goal. In the end, the NLT is the result of precise scholarship conveyed in living, contemporary language.

Free Online Access To The Nlt Text And Study Bible Resources

Purchase of the NLT Study Bible also provides readers with free online access to the entire text, study resources, illustrations, and maps. This has been a great resource for me to use in outlines I provide to students, when needing to copy large chunks of scripture digitally, etc. It also provides me access to my Bible when traveling so I do not have to bring my physical Bible.

New Living Translation Bible Overview

  • General Biblical Studies, Interdenominational Christian Training Center

In July 1996, Tyndale House Publishers launched the New Living Translation , a revision of the Living Bible. The NLT was seven years in the making.

The New Living Translation was founded on the most recent scholarship in the theory of translation, with the goal of communicating the meaning of the ancient Bible texts as accurately as possible to the modern reader. It seeks to preserve the freshness and readability of the original paraphrase while providing the accuracy and reliability of a translation prepared by a team of 90 biblical scholars.

How Easy Is The Nlt To Read

The NLT Bible is written at a 6th Grade Reading Level. This means that readers from the ages of 11 and up should be able to confidently read the majority of the NLT text and roughly understand what it means. What determines this level is the total number of unique words and sentences, as well as sentence length and the length of the words themselves. Other grammatical features also carry weight in the score. The reading level doesnt take into account any understanding of history and context. Just the words and grammar of the text.As an example, this sentence you are currently reading would score at a Grade Nine on the readability test. This sentence would be at Grade Two.

How Was It Translated

You can tell a lot about how and why a Bible was translated by looking at the team picked for the task. For the NLT, that pool of experts was a broad one. The range of scholars and theologians chosen for the translation didnt come from any singular denomination or background. Though broadly Evangelical, the translators were picked for their expertise in exegetical and contextual matters. Amongst these respected Christian thinkers were skilled English stylists whose job was to shape the language used into something altogether closer to contemporary English.

The team working on the Old Testament used as their primary sources the Masoretic Text, which is the authoritative Hebrew and Aramaic text of the Hebrew Bible. As well as those, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the and a selection of Greek and Latin were consulted. For the New Testament, the Greek New Testament and the were employed.

Some of the changes made in the name of readability included:

  • Converted weights into modern measures

  • Currencies were changed from locally-used names to more general terms for the period’s various monies

  • Ancient dates converted to be as close as possible to the Gregorian calendar

  • Modern times of day used

  • Explanations of word meanings that are important to the text

Which Translation Is More Popular Nlt Or Esv

The New Living Translation ranks #3 on the April 2021 Bible Translations Bestsellers list according to the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association . Numbers 1 and 2 on the list are the NIV and the KJV.

The Canadian Gideons chose the New Living Translation for distribution to hotels, motels, hospitals, and so forth, and used the New Living Translation for their New Life Bible App.

The English Standard Version ranks #4 on the Bible Translations Bestsellers list.

In 2013, Gideons International, who distributes free Bibles to hotels, hospitals, convalescent homes, medical offices, domestic violence shelters, and prisons, announced it was replacing the New King James Version with the ESV, making it one of the most widely distributed versions around the world.

Pros and Cons of Both

The New Living Translation biggest pro is that it encourages Bible reading. Its readability is great for reading through the Bible, and even in Bible study, it brings new life and clarity to verses. Its readability makes it a good Bible to hand to an unsaved loved one, as its likely to be read, not placed on the shelf.

Another pro of the NLT is that it seems to be translated in a way that answers the question, How does this passage apply to my life? The point of having a Bible is to let it transform ones life, and the NLT is great for that.

Some Christians arent comfortable with the more gender-inclusive language of the NLT, as it is adding to Scripture.

Review The New Living Translation Of The Bible NLT

There was a time when the only translation most believers held to be valid was the King James Version. The New International Version was one of the first translations which managed to show Christians there were “better” translations available which were just as valid. The NIV was translated directly from the original languages by more than 100 biblical scholars of various denominations. A self-governing body of fifteen biblical scholars, the Committee on Bible Translation, was developed to oversee the translation work with various teams working on the translation and submitting it for review by intermediate editorial committees and then to a general committee of 8-12 members before being sent to selected individuals before a final review. Samples of the translation were tested for clarity and ease of reading with pastors, students, scholars, and many others. The NIV charter made provision to update the NIV as new biblical scholarship and changes to the English language took place. While most NIV readers use the 1984 revision the latest one was released in 2011.

The NIV is considered a dynamic translation–seeking to balance between word-for-word and thought-for-thought translation styles. There is a reason the New International Version is this year’s #1 selling Bible. The NIV gets a score of 7.80 for reading difficulty.

Is The Nlt A Paraphrase Or A Translation

The New Living Translation is actually one of my favorite Bible versions, due to its simple reading level and beautiful English composition. But there is a bit of confusion about the title. Is the NLT actually a translation? Or is it just a paraphrase?

The New Living Translation is an accurate and legitimate translation from Hebrew and Greek. The confusion, however, is understandable, since the NLT began as a revision to the 1971 paraphrase by Kenneth Taylor, the Living Bible. However, the final product grew into much more than a revision. The result was a complete translation from the ground up.

The NLT is no ordinary translation, however. Its very unique in the way it came about and in the way it was translated. Keep reading to learn more about how this descendant of the Living Bible Paraphrase became the complete translation that it is today.

The New Testament translators used the two standard editions of the Greek New Testament: the Greek New Testament, published by the United Bible Societies , and Novum Testamentum Graece, edited by Nestle and Aland . These two editions, which have the same text but differ in punctuation and textual notes, represent, for the most part, the best in modern textual scholarship on the New Testament….

The Nlt Translation Philosophy

The translation philosophy of the New Living Translation is to emphasize English clarity. As such, it is a very dynamic equivalent translation, which means the text reflects an idea-for-idea philosophy instead of word-for-word.

The NLT is one of the most dynamic translations out there, since it aims to capture the clarity and beauty of the original Living Bible paraphrase. Its readability is unmatched by most other modern translations. So if youre looking for a readable and understandable translation thats still totally based on the most up-to-date textual evidence that we have at our disposal, the NLT is probably the Bible for you.

Now, its not perfect. There is some give and take. The more dynamic a translation becomes, the more interpretive it is. This means the NLT is quite a bit more interpretive than a translation like the NIV.

But heres the thing. The translation is interpretation. In order to take words from ancient Hebrew and reflect those same ideas in modern English, interpretation has to happen. The question is, how much interpretation needs to take place?

A formal equivalent translation, such as the ESV, will do only as much interpretation as is necessary to get the words into English. This is great because it allows the reader to make interpretive decisions on their own without being guided by the translation committee.

Why I Prefer The New Living Translation Bible

by Pastor Priji | May 27, 2014 | Life Principles

Those who have been following my posts and sermons/podcasts for a while would have, by now, noticed that I follow and use scriptures from the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible. I have been trying out different translations for a long time now. The one translation that has caught my heart is New Living Translation.

Heres a little information about NLT Bible I found out, just to give you the background.

In 1989, ninety evangelical scholars from various theological backgrounds and denominations were commissioned to revise the Living Bible. The project began with the purpose of merely correcting parts of the Living Bible. However, as the 100 scholars began to work, the decision was made to complete an entirely new translation.

Each work of translation went through the channels of critique: the individual, a book committee, a general reviewer committee, and back to the individual. In 1994, the translators gathered again to make the revisions determined by the reviewers. Due to the extensive efforts put in by world-class Bible scholars, the New Living Translation is the most expensive translation project in the history of Bible translation.

Can I please highlight the few reasons for why I have stuck to NLT?

1. The Simplicity of Language

KJV: Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2. The Dynamic Translation

3. The Richness of the Text

From The Revision Of A Paraphrase To A Full Translation

Kenneth Taylors The Living Bible was widely received and loved by many. However, as is to be expected with any large project of this scope taken on by one person, there were a few issues with the original paraphrase. There were enough inaccuracies to warrant an update.

So in 1989, almost twenty years after the original release of The Living Bible, 90 scholars from various religious traditions and academic disciplines came together to start working on the new version of The Living Bible, originally titled The New Living Version.

As the update started, the Bible was divided up into six parts and assigned to different scholars. Each scholar would review their section of The Living Bible and submit their suggestions for details that needed updating. The committee went through several sweeps through the text before it became apparent that the best thing to do was just to create a brand new translation from scratch, which then became known as the New Living Translation.

So the 90 scholars worked from the original Greek and Hebrew texts to create their translations. But there was also a team of English stylists working with the translators just to ensure that the flow of language adhered to the original feel of Taylors paraphrase.

The NLT was originally published in 1996 with various updates since then, the most recent being in 2016.

Is The Esv Or Nasb Better

It would be very helpful if someone with the linguistic and critical skills could measure the ESV against the Hebrew and Greek text rather than just comparing it to the NASB. However, based on these initial findings, it seems to me that the ESV has a clear edge over the NASB in accuracy and readability.

The Nlt Translation Basis

How do we know the NLT was a translation and not a paraphrase? While it was originally based on The Living Bible paraphrase, its textual basis is found in the original languages. This doesnt automatically qualify the NLT as a translation, but at least we can see that their starting point is not The Living Bible paraphrase, but on the best textual evidence, we have that points to the original documents. The Living Bible, on the other hand, was based on the English text of the 1901 American Standard Version.

For the Old Testament, the NLT is based on the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia text, which is essentially the Leningrad Codex. This is the standard Hebrew Old Testament used by scholars everywhere, as we dont currently have an eclectic version of the Hebrew Bible.

For the New Testament, the NLT used both the NA27 and the UBS 4th edition, both of which were the standard Greek eclectic texts widely accepted by biblical scholarship at the time.

Thus, the New Living Translation was the product of a group of 90 top biblical scholars using some of the best resources available to them. It is a trustworthy translation that we can rely on, despite the fact that it was inspired by a paraphrase.
