What The Bible Says About Fatherhood

The Lord Disciplines Those He Loves

What does the Bible say about Christian Father’s?

âMy son, do not despise the LORDâs discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.â

It may seem strange to think of discipline as a sign of love, but a lack of correction often comes from a lack of concern. While kids who are disciplined may wish they had more freedom from consequences, children who grow up with no rules or correction come to crave structure and even recognize it as a result of love.

The disciplined child may ask, âWhy do you even care?â And the answer is, âBecause I love you and care about your well-being, and I want the best for you.â The undisciplined child may question, âWhy donât you care?â

Honor Your Father And Mother

Father bible verse Malachi 4:6 Father

âHonor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.â

The Israelites were commanded to honor their fathers and mothers as part of their covenant with God. Dishonoring their parents dishonored God. But this isnât just an ancient commandment for the Israelites. Itâs for us too.

Paul repeats this commandment to Christians in Ephesians 6:1â3:

âChildren, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. âHonor your father and motherâ , âthat it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.ââ

And in Colossians 3:20, Paul paraphrases this commandment and connects it to our relationship with God:

âChildren, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.â

Bible Verses About A Fathers Role

A fathers role in the family is a pivotal one. He is called upon to be a leader and protector for the family, and to give an example of Christs love by being loving towards the childrens mother. He is also to be strong in the faith, and to bring the children up knowing right from wrong.

Ephesians 5:25-37 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the churchfor we are members of his body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mysterybut I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Genesis 18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.

Do Not Exasperate Your Children

âChildren, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. âHonor your father and motherââwhich is the first commandment with a promiseââso that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.â Fathers, do not exasperate your children instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.â

The Bible doesnât just tell children to obey and honor their parents. It also tells fathers not to do or say things that deeply frustrate their children. The ESV translates âdo not exasperate your childrenâ as âdo not provoke your children to anger.â

A fatherâs goal should be to bring out the best in his children. If a father angers or frustrates his children, heâs leading them into sin and steering them away from what God desires for them. This can be incredibly difficult, and following Paulâs admonition requires fathers to be intimately attuned to their childâs heart and sensitive to their weaknesses.

The Lord Carried You As A Father Carries His Son

âThen I said to you, âDo not be terrified do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.ââ

âAs a father carries his son,â the Lord carried the Israelites out of slavery, fought off their enemies, provided for them through their wandering in the desert, and brought them into the promised land.

When a child isnât strong enough to do something on their own, their father can carry them through it. Fathers advocate for their children. They provide wisdom and guidance in the face of uncertainty. And with the protection of a loving father, a child doesnât have to be afraid.

  • Fathers, do not exasperate your children instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord .
  • Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged .
  • The Call For Obedience: Communication Of Truth

Deuteronomy 6:1-2 Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD YOUR God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it, 2 so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

Deuteronomy 4:10-11 Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, Assemble the people to Me, that I may let them hear My words so they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children. 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire to the very heart of the heavens: darkness, cloud and thick gloom.

The experience at Horeb in Deuteronomy 4 was designed to produce a reverential fear of God in the hearts of the people so that a covenant between them and the Lord would be possible. In the Old Testament the fear of God is more than awe or reverence though it includes both. Fearing God is to become so acutely aware of His moral purity and omnipotence that one is genuinely afraid to disobey Him. Fearing God also includes responding to Him in worship, service, trust, obedience, and commitment.

Listen My Sons To A Fathers Instruction

âListen, my sons, to a fatherâs instruction

    pay attention and gain understanding.

For I give you sound teaching

    do not abandon my directive.â

Proverbs 4 is a good passage for fathers and children alike to reflect on in its entirety. Itâs a message about the importance of seeking and acquiring wisdom and an assurance that a son can trust his father to be a source of wisdom. Long after a father is gone, his wisdom will live on in the words he has spoken to his children. The insights, advice, and encouragement he has given them will continue to shape their decisions and even become the things they pass on to their own children.

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian Father

What the Bible really says about Christian fathers.

The Bible tells us, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness . A Christian fathers first and greatest responsibility is to acquaint his children with God through Scripture. One of the reasons this is so important is because what children learn about God will put them in good standing throughout their lives, no matter what they do and where they go.

God uses the Christian father as an instrument for instruction and discipline, in which God commands and administers. Ephesians 6:4 is a summary of instructions to fathers. Fathers, do not exasperate your children, instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord . A wise father seeks to make obedience desirable and attainable by love and gentleness. We know from history that the father was to be diligent in instructing children in the ways and words of the Lord for their own spiritual development and well-being. The father who was obedient to the commands of Scripture did just that. Proverbs 22:6 says, Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. To train indicates that the first teaching that a father and mother give a child. This training is created in a way to make clear to children the life they are intended for, a life of great importance.
