What The Bible Says About Weed

Why Is Smoking Weed A Sin

What does the Bible say about Marijuana / Weed / Cannabis / Pot? Is it okay?

What did Paul say in the Bible? He said, I will not be brought under the power of any. The sole purpose of marijuana is for you get high and receive the effects of the strain of cannabis that you are smoking. With marijuana you are yielding up control to an external force and releasing self-control.

1. 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

These Devout Christians Are Using The Bible To Argue That Pot Is Gods Perfect Medicine

The Deep South is the nations most religious region and the least open to legalized cannabis for medical or recreational use. To those who say marijuana is a sin, though, devout Christians are using the Bible to argue that it is Gods perfect medicine.

Lydia Decker couldnt miss the man in the motorized wheelchair as he whirred down the aisles of a West Texas grocery store. As someone with lung problems herself, she noticed his oxygen tank and wondered about his illness and his meds. They got talking, and Decker mentioned Genesis 1:29, the organization she heads that uses religion to preach the value of medical cannabis. This was one conversion that wasn’t going to happen.

Oh, that trash! Decker remembered the man saying as she tried to reason with him in the pharmacy aisle. The nurse with the man politely asked Decker, who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, to leave. She did, but not before handing the nurse a Genesis 1:29 business card, which features a map of Texas covered with a large cannabis leaf and the words One Mission End Prohibition!

Do you know he almost ran over me with the cart? Decker said, laughing. My goodness, he flipped a U-ee in the aisle.

Obviously, not everyone in Texas is receptive to Deckers interpretation of the Bible none of the laws covering medical or recreational cannabis were likely to pass before the legislative session ends in late May.

What Does The Bible Say About Cannabis:

If you scan the Bible specifically for the words cannabis youll find zero matches. The Bible never references cannabis by this name. But the search doesnt end there. Just like many other terms in the Bible, theyve been translated over the years or simply went by a different name during that time.

Many scholars will agree that what is known currently as cannabis is actually mentioned quite a few times in both the New Testaments and Old Testaments. Some will go further and even argue that cannabis was critically important in these scriptures and are involved in many well known Bible stories.

Cannabis And Other Religions

Before we jump right into the scriptures of Christianity, it seems only right first to take a look at how cannabis is received amongst other religious groups as a whole.

Along with many well-known religions such as the aforementioned Rastafarian religion , there are now a number of religions that center massively on marijuana. These modern faith groups have come together to celebrate religion and cannabis!

Groups such as THC Ministries, Cantheism, The Cannabis Assembly, The Church of the Universe, The Free Marijuana Church of Honolulu, and The First Church of Cannabis concentrate on cannabis, just to name a few!

Among these are also other well-known religions that date back centuries who benefit from cannabis as part of their spiritual healing. Taoism, which originates back to 4th century China, uses cannabis incense as a cleansing tool while in Norse mythology the cannabis plant relates to beauty, fertility, and love.

These are merely a few examples of cannabis being implemented into the holy and ancient rituals of religion. But where does it fall with Christianity and the Bible?

Is Recreational Marijuana Use A Sin

Last November, citizens of Colorado voted on Amendment 64, an amendment to their states constitution that would allow the personal use and regulation of marijuana for adults 21 and over, as well as commercial cultivation, manufacture, and sale, effectively regulating cannabis in a manner similar to alcohol. The first stores selling marijuana for recreational use officially opened on January 1, 2014.

While the new legislation applies only to Colorado , Americans across the nation are beginning to examine questions related to the use of marijuana. For Christians, one of the most pertinent questions is whether the recreational use of marijuana is sinful.

Although many Christians consider the answer to the question to be rather straightforward, it can be helpful to examine the reasoning process that allows us to determine how biblical principles can be applied to this issue.

How Does God View Weed Smoking

Many people wonder, how does God feel about marijuana? What does the Bible say? The Bible warns against intoxication and altering your mind. You might say, thats for alcohol, but intoxication is not only for alcohol. You can drink a glass of wine and you will be fine, but the purpose of smoking is to alter your mind. You smoke for the purpose of getting high.

Proverbs 23:31-35 Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. Afterward it bites like a snake, and stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will speak perverse things. And you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, and like one who lies down on the top of the rigging. You will say, They have struck me, but I am not harmed! They beat me, but I did not know it! When will I awake? I will look for another drink.

Was Cannabis Purposely Removed From The Bible

The possibility exists that the ceremony of anointment with Holy oil played a central role in early Christianity. A collection of lost Biblical texts was discovered in Egypt in 1945. These books had been sealed in a jar and buried around AD 367 when the church disallowed any tellings of Jesus story that were not included in the official New Testament. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, were actually among many existing accounts of Jesus life. These books, in particular, were handpicked by the church for inclusion in the Bible, as they presented uniform accounts of the narrative Christianitys leaders wished to present.

The non-canonical texts tell of sects that became known as Gnostics. This name comes from the Greek word for knowledge. The Gnostics believed that they achieved a higher degree of enlightenment and understanding of their religion through first-hand use of Holy oil, versus relying on the words of the Scriptures and priests. These texts indicate that this sacramental rite of anointment would have indeed been a psychoactive experience.

Can You Smoke Weed And Still Go To Heaven

What Does The Bible Say About Weed?

I think this is a bad question. Smoking weed is not what causes people to go to hell. You go to hell by not repenting and putting your trust in Christ alone. If you have not been saved by faith in Christ alone, then you will not enter into heaven. Let me say this again, if you have not trusted in the perfect work of Jesus Christ on your behalf and trusted Him for the forgiveness of sins, then you will not enter into heaven. We are not saved by works. You get into heaven by resting solely upon the perfect work of Jesus.

Christ took away the sin that was blocking us from God. He lived the perfect life that we couldnt live. Jesus died, He was buried, and He was resurrected for our sins. Trust in Christ alone. However, let me say this as well. Genuine faith in Christ will radically change your life. Evidence that you have put your faith in Christ is that you will be a new creature with new desires and affections for Christ and His Word. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come The old has gone, the new is here! A genuine Christian still struggles with sin, but what a Christian will not do is live a continuous lifestyle of rebellion and sin towards God. If He truly is a Christian, then He is a new creature. If he knows that weed is sinful, he will not want to indulge in that lifestyle.

What The Bible Says About Weed Alcohol

What The Bible Says About Cannabis Oil And Bles...

Looking for Bible verses about marijuana or alcohol? While the Bible is filled with instruction on avoiding drunkenness, Bible verses about weed specifically do not exist.

However, Galatians 5:19-21 says, “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

In this passage, the word sorcery implies “the use or administering of drugs,” from the original translated Greek word pharmakeia, according to Strong’s Concordance.

Not only is sorcery found in Galatians, but in a multitude of other verses as well, all implying the use of marijuana and other drugs.

The most serious of these is Revelation 9:20-21 and Revelation 18:23, where scripture tells us mind-altering drug use, as experience by those who smoke weed or use other drugs, will lead to destruction and punishment for those who will not repent:

“The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk and they did not repent of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their immorality nor of their thefts,” .

Bible Verses That Arent About Marijuana But Should Be

The debate over how christianity should view marijuana has raged on for years. Unfortunantly, there are no bible verses that speak directly about marijuana, so we found some that we think should have been referencing weed. All of these bible verses are being taken out of context. Again none of these versus are about weed, but it would be a lot cooler if they were.

These bible verses were taken from a version of the King James Bible, which can be viewed here.

So What Does The Bible Say About Marijuana

From what can be deduced from the previous biblical verses, the use of marijuana itself is not sinful. Rather, sin arises from intoxication and debauched behavior. As long as you behave yourself, you probably have nothing to worry about.

However, if you are really concerned that marijuana is a sin, it is best to avoid it, as there is no concrete evidence that it is, but also that it is not.

What Constitutes Intoxication

The analogical argument against recreational marijuana use appears rather incontrovertible. However, the Bible prohibits drunkenness, it does not prohibit all uses of alcoholeven those for recreational purposes. A person can consume small quantities of alcohol without any intention of becoming intoxicated. Can a person consume small quantities of marijuana without any intention of becoming intoxicated?

To answer the question we must determine the average quantity of the drugalcohol or marijuananeeded to produce the impaired state.

For alcohol, the unit of measure is the standard drink, that is any drink that contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol . A standard drink is conventionally defined as the alcohol content of 12 ounces of 5 percent-alcohol beer or 5 ounces of 12 percent-alcohol wine or an ounce and half of 40 percent-alcohol spirits . In most U.S. states, the legally defined level of intoxication typically occurs, depending on pacing, after four drinks for an average-sized woman or five for an average-sized man.

For marijuana, however, a much lower dosage is needed to induce a state of intoxication. Studies show that intoxication occurs at the ingestion of less than 7 mg of THC . That is approximately the equivalent to four puffs of a marijuana cigarette.

Weed For Good Relations

What Does the Bible Say About Marijuana and Drug Use?

And I will provide for them renowned plantations so that they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer suffer the reproach of the nations.

Weed can definitely be pacifying and appease the reproach of the nations. The only contradiction here is the ensuing munchies which sadly do consume one with hunger in the land.

What Do The Skeptics Say

Not all scholars embrace the theory that Biblical references to calamus are merely mistranslations of cannabis. Lytton John Musselman, a professor of botany at Old Dominion University, insists that calamus has strong medicinal properties all on its own. He shares examples of its popularity in Sri Lanka, as well as among the Native Americans who once populated the northeastern United States. Musselman also defends calamuss status as a healing plant, as it is used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Additionally, many people interpret the many Biblical warnings against getting drunk on alcohol to naturally include intoxication by marijuana , though this is not explicitly stated anywhere in the Bible.

Q: What does the Bible say about using weed?A:The Bible doesnt outline explicit rules against using weed, though it could be argued that the verses warning against alcohol intoxication apply to any substance capable of producing an intoxicating effect.

Is Smoking Forbidden In The Bible

This is a hard question that some people may struggle with. The short answer: it depends. The Bible never says specifically, dont smoke weed, yet most people have been told time and time again that smoking is a sin. Stigma has a lot to do with what is considered sinful.

In Romans 14:14-15, it is said that, nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it is unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. This verse states that nothing is inherently sinful by itself, but becomes sinful if it hurts someone close to you. Some might say that this would make smoking weed sinful, especially if those around you do not condone the consumption of cannabis.

But in Romans 14:19 it says, So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. If smoking weed brings you peace and helps you to become more understanding of those around you, then it wouldnt be considered sinful.

Saying weed is or isnt sinful would be a blanket statement, but the truth is that it depends on the person. Smoking weed can become sinful if it causes you to stumble in your values and morals, but smoking weed isnt sinful on its own. If you are trying to decide whether or not to smoke weed because you feel conflicted on the morality of it all, I say give it a shot. God and weed can go hand in hand when done right.
