10 Jehovah’s Witness Teachings That Are Unbiblical

All scripture is inspired of God. These words of 2 Timothy 3:16 identify God, whose name is Jehovah, as the Author and Inspirer of the Holy Scriptures. How satisfyingly delightful the inspired Scriptures are! What an amazing fund of true knowledge they provide! They are indeed the very knowledge of God that has been sought after and treasured by lovers of righteousness in all ages-Proverbs 2:5. .

The above statement comes from a textbook written by anonymous authors of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society , the official corporation of the Jehovahs Witnesses. Most evangelical Christians would read it and find little or nothing to dispute about it. Indeed, Christians historically have affirmed the full inspiration and authority of the 66 books comprising the Protestant Bible.

The WBTS concurs:

The sacred Scriptures, as a collection from Genesis to Revelation, form one complete Book, one complete library, all inspired by the one supreme AuthorThe sixty-six Bible books, all together, form the one library of the Holy Scriptures .

Evangelical Christians furthermore affirm the Bible as the authority for believers in all matters of faith and practice. Once again, the WBTS assumes the same authority for the Bible, in principle: The Scriptures are Gods incomparable gift to mankind, a storehouse of spiritual treasures whose depth of wisdom is unfathomable, and whose power for enlightening and stimulating to righteousness exceeds that of all other books ever written .

Governing Body Of Jehovah’s Witnesses

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses is the ruling council of Jehovah’s Witnesses based in the group’s Warwick, New York, headquarters. The body formulates doctrines, oversees the production of written material for publications and conventions, and administers the group’s worldwide operations. Official publications refer to members of the Governing Body as followers of Christ rather than religious leaders.

Its size has varied, from seven to eighteen members. New members of the Governing Body are selected by existing members.

Misconceptions About Gods Name In The Bible

Misconception: Translations that use Jehovah have added this name.

Fact: The Hebrew word for Gods name in the form of the Tetragrammaton appears some 7,000 times in the Bible. * Most translations arbitrarily remove Gods name and replace it with a title such as Lord.

Misconception: Almighty God does not need a unique name.

Fact: God himself inspired Bible writers to use his name thousands of times, and he directs those who worship him to use his name. In fact, God condemned false prophets who tried to make people forget his name.Jeremiah 23:27.

Misconception: Following the tradition of the Jews, Gods name should be removed from the Bible.

Fact: It is true that some Jewish scribes refused to pronounce the divine name. However, they did not remove it from their copies of the Bible. In any case, God does not want us to follow human traditions that deviate from his commandments.Matthew 15:1-3.

Misconception: The divine name should not be used in the Bible because it is not known exactly how to pronounce it in Hebrew.

Fact: This line of reasoning assumes that God expects people who speak different languages to pronounce his name identically. However, the Bible indicates that Gods worshippers in the past who spoke different languages pronounced proper names differently.

The same principle can be applied to translating the divine name. Far more important than the exact pronunciation chosen is that Gods name be given its rightful place in the Bible.

Jehovahs Witnesses Arrested Under Sedition Act

The Witnesses ran afoul of the law as early as World War I because of their pacifist stance and their refusal to take oaths. Some were arrested under the Sedition Act of 1918, the only time in American history when almost all the leaders of a denomination were in jail .

The Witnesses also went to court to defend their right under the free exercise clause to refuse blood transfusions based on their religious beliefs. They have won legal victories protecting the rights of adults in this regard, but the courts have sided with compelling state interests where children are involved.

A Jehovahs Witness provided the occasion for the Supreme Courts fighting words ruling in Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire , in which the Court unanimously decided that Walter Chaplinskys abusive, face-to-face name-calling, aimed at a city marshal, would likely cause the average person to retaliate, were not essential to reasonable discourse, and thus were not protected speech.

Because Witnesses were instructed to remain courteous in their encounters with the police, however, this case seems somewhat of an aberration and not truly a defining part of the Witnesses struggle for their free exercise rights.

The Governing Body is said to provide “spiritual food” for Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide. The Governing Body does not consult with the other anointed Witnesses whom it was said to represent when formulating policy and doctrines or approving material for publications and conventions the authority of the Governing Body was presumed to be analogous to that of the older men of Jerusalem in cases such as the first-century circumcision issue. The majority of Witnesses who profess to be anointed have no authority to contribute to the development or change of doctrines. Anointed Witnesses are instructed to remain modest and avoid “wildly speculating about things that are still unclear,” instead waiting for God to reveal his purposes in The Watchtower.

    New World Translation Verse Deleted

At a casual reading, the NWT appears to be a good Bible translation. But a careful analysis will reveal that unlike most major translations of the Bible, the NWT has deleted all the verses where there are manuscript differences. Please visit How Accurate Is the Bible? for an explanation of manuscript differences. In sharp contrast, other major translations such as the New American Standard Bible , the New International Version and the New King James Version , the New Century Version , the New Living Translation or the Contemporary English Version did not delete those verses. Instead, they kept them and alerted the reader that they were in question. Since these passages are in question, the NWT should have not deleted them. As a result, the NWT deleted forty-even different verses from the New Testament. Here are just some of the examples: Matthew 17:21 18:11 23:14 Mark 7:16 9:44, 46 11:26 15:28 Luke 17:36 23:17 John 5:4 7:53- 8:11 Acts 15:34 28:29 and Romans 16:24.

    What Is A Cult

There will be three cults that we consider in this section. A definition or description of a cult might be helpful. Although there is no universally adopted definition, there are characteristics of cults that are worth mentioning as we begin this study.

    Doctrinal Differences

Cults talk about new revelations from God. Often these revelations come in order to justify teachings , and therefore there is a denial of the sole authority of Scripture. Mormons, Jehovahs Witnesses, and The Unity Organization are examples of cults. Grace as a means of salvation is denied, as is the uniqueness of Jesus as the second person of the godhead.

    Sociological Differences

There are sociological differences that characterize cultish groups. It is common forcults to engage in proselytizing and practice deception in their use or misuse of terms. Mormons, Jehovahs Witnesses, and the International Churchof Christ are examples of those who proselytize vigorously.

A third characteristic involvesauthoritarian aspects of cultish groups. They are dogmatic, close-minded, andgenerally are separatists. Brainwashing takesplace in these systems.

Many other things prevail such as immorality and physical abuse. Although we will not deal with the group known as The Children of God,David Koreshsgroup, or the Way, immorality has persisted in these groups as well as many of todays cults.
