Biblical Words For Dreams

In the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament, the word used for dream is lôm, referring to either an ordinary dream or one that is given by God. In the New Testament, two different Greek words for dream appear. The Gospel of Matthew contains the word ónar, referring specifically to message or oracle dreams . However, Acts 2:17 and Jude 8 use a more general term for dream and dreaming , which refer to both oracle and non-oracle dreams.

A night vision or vision in the night is another phrase used in the Bible to denote a message or oracle dream. This expression is found in both Old and New Testaments .

The Second Journey To Egypt

43 Now the famine was still severe in the land.2 So when they had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, Go back and buy us a little more food.

3 But Judah said to him, The man warned us solemnly, You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.4 If you will send our brother along with us, we will go down and buy food for you.5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, because the man said to us, You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.

6 Israel asked, Why did you bring this trouble on me by telling the man you had another brother?

7 They replied, The man questioned us closely about ourselves and our family. Is your father still living? he asked us. Do you have another brother? We simply answered his questions. How were we to know he would say, Bring your brother down here?

8 Then Judah said to Israel his father, Send the boy along with me and we will go at once, so that we and you and our children may live and not die.9 I myself will guarantee his safety you can hold me personally responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him here before you, I will bear the blame before you all my life.10 As it is, if we had not delayed, we could have gone and returned twice.

23 Its all right, he said. Dont be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks I received your silver. Then he brought Simeon out to them.

Ten is a big number in Judaism: Everyone knows about the 10 commandments, but God also created the world with 10 ineffable statements and the Torah records 10 songs and also, 10 dreams. Interestingly, all 10 of the dreams recorded in the Torah occur in just one book, namely the book of Genesis. So now, heres a quick quiz for you: before you read on, how many of the Torahs 10 dreams can you name? Here they are, in chronological order:

1) The Philistine King Abimelech has a dream where God comes to him, and admonishes him for stealing Sarah away from Abraham, her husband. Abimelech protests that he thought that Sarah was Abrahams sister, but is so disturbed by his nocturnal visitation that he immediately gives Sarah back when he awakens.

2) The next dream occurs when Jacob is fleeing from his brother Esau, and falls into a supernatural sleep while hes making his way out of Israel, to neighboring Haran. Jacob dreams of a ladder: set in the earth, and its head reached the heavens, and behold, angels of God were going up and down on it

4) Laban, Jacobs father-in-law has the next dream, while hes busy pursuing his son-in-law in order to try to force him to return to Haran. God shows up in a dream, and tells Laban that he should do neither good or bad to Jacob .

Interpretation Of Dreams In The Bible

  • General Biblical Studies, Interdenominational Christian Training Center

God used dreams in the Bible many times to communicate his will, reveal his plans, and to announce future events. However, biblical dream interpretation required careful testing to prove it came from God . Both Jeremiah and Zechariah warned against relying on dreams to express the revelation of God .

Josephs Interpretation Of Dreams In Prison

Josephs service in prison was marked by the Lords presence, the jailers favor, and Josephs promotion to leadership . In prison, Joseph met two of Pharaohs officials who were incarcerated, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. Many Egyptian texts mention the role of cupbearers, who not only tasted wine for quality and to detect poison but also who enjoyed proximity to those with political power. They often became confidants who were valued for their counsel . Like chief cupbearers, chief bakers were also trusted officials who had open access to the highest persons in the government and who may have performed duties that extended beyond the preparation of food. In prison, Joseph did the work of interpreting dreams for these politically connected individuals.

Interpreting dreams in the ancient world was a sophisticated profession involving technical dream books that listed elements of dreams and their meanings. Records of the veracity of past dreams and their interpretations provided empirical evidence to support the interpreters predictions. Joseph, however, was not schooled in this tradition and credited God with providing the interpretations that eventually proved true . In this case, the cupbearer was restored to his former post, where he promptly forgot about Joseph.

Joseph And Potiphars Wife

FreeBibleimages :: Joseph

39 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaohs officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Josephs care with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,7 and after a while his masters wife took notice of Joseph and said, Come to bed with me!

11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.12 She caught him by his cloak and said, Come to bed with me! But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

What Is The Dream Interpretation Of Finding A Bible

Self-confidence is the most dangerous thing that we have. It can imply that you are totally confident in yourself but you also need to be confident in God. The only confidence that we have is based on who we are. For example, before having my dream I studied what the Bible means to me, in my life right now. Studying this dream meaning gave me confidence so that I can focus and deliver this message of dream interpretation properly. I’ve written dream interpretations thousands and thousands of times so that experience certainly me the confidence that I can do this right. There is a breakthrough, a shift that is about to take place if you found a bible. What I am trying to say here is that a bible in a dream indicates there is something else way down deep inside you and I can tell you that I know that you will find success in time. As TJ Jakes said in one of his speeches: we have a number of storms in life. Emotional storms, financial storms, and through these unseen storms we cannot see god. But, God can see through those storms. If you are having a storm in your life right now it is not uncommon to dream of the Bible. The Bible tells us that God will not share his glory with anyone so glory needs to focus on you and be internal.

Dreams can often leave us anxious, hopeful, or just plain confused and thats if you even remember them! Even in the Bible, where there are several references to dreams, its not always clear. Sometimes people were called to see dreams as symbolic, but in some special cases, dreams were a way for God to speak directly to the person, telling them what to do. The way the dreamer responded demonstrated the importance of staying true to Gods Word and not straying from the path of righteousness.

While there are various ways to interpret dreams, one of the ways we can be inspired by dreams in the Bible is to reflect on how each of the people who experienced Gods voice in a dream bravely took action and trusted God to lead them and fulfill his promises. Whenever and wherever we think God is speaking to us, we can do the same. Here are 5 dreams in the Bible to inspire us in our own lives.
