The children were tending a flock of sheep outside the tiny village of Fatima, Portugal, when they first saw the angel. He was transparent, they said, and shining like a crystal.
Lucia Abobora, 9, and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto, 6 and 7, were stunned.
He said, Do not be afraid. I am the angel of peace. Pray with me, Abobora later renamed Lucia de Jesus de dos Santos recounted in her memoir, Fatima in Lucias Own Words, published in 1976.
During the rest of 1916, as World War I raged in Europe, the angel showed himself two more times to the children. But they told no one what theyd seen.
In the spring of 1917, something more extraordinary began unfolding visions that would put three children on the path to sainthood and transform Fatima from an ordinary village to the site of a Catholic shrine venerated and visited by millions.
The Virgin Mary appeared to the children on May 13, 1917 as a lady dressed in white, shining brighter than the sun, giving out rays of clear and intense light, dos Santos wrote. She promised to come to the children on the 13th of each month.
Jacinta told her mother about it. While her siblings joked about the apparition, her alarmed mother hauled her in front of their parish priest to recant. She would not.
Interest in what was happening in Fatima grew more intense.
On that day, Oct. 13, 1917, the crowd of believers had swelled to 70,000.

The 1925 Message To Luciaof The Fatima Apparitions
Then on December 10, 1925 Mary and the child Jesus appeared, according to Lucia. The child Jesus said:
Have pity on the Heart of your Most Holy Mother. It is covered with the thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to remove them with an act of reparation .
Then the personage presenting herself as Our Lady of Fatima said to Lucia:
My daughter, look at My Heart surrounded with the thorns with which ungrateful men piece it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least, try to console me, and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me .
A Greater Miracle Denied
Sister Lucia revealed later in her life that the miracle of the sun could have been greater had the children not been abducted by Arthur Oliveira Santos, the cruel and conniving administrator of the Administrative Council of Vila Nova de Ourém. She originally expressed this remarkable detail in the interrogation done by Father Manuel Marques Ferreira on August 21, 1917, two days after the apparition but which she left out in her 1941 report.
Here is a fitting example of a transgression committed against the wishes of Our Lady which she left unpunished. Though no fault of the children, it is lamentably sad to note that the multitudes at Fatima on the afternoon of October 13, 1917 were deprived of a far greater miracle if not for the deception, trickery and malice of civil authorities.

The Angel Of Portugal
However, in the spring of the previous year, 1916, the children had their first supernatural encounter as a means of preparing them for their meetings with the Queen of Heaven. As they were looking after their sheep one day, they saw a dazzlingly beautiful young man, seemingly made of light, who told them he was the Angel of Peace. He invited them to pray with him.
Later on in the summer, the Angel again appeared to the children and encouraged them to pray and make sacrifices as a way of drawing down peace on their country.
In the autumn, the children again saw the Angel as they were looking after their sheep. He appeared before them holding a chalice in his hands. Above it was a suspended host from which drops of blood were falling into the chalice. The Angel left the chalice suspended in the air and prostrated himself before it in prayer. He taught them a prayer of Eucharistic reparation.
He then gave the host to Lucia and the chalice to Francisco and Jacinta, saying:
Take and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Repair their crimes and console your God.
Then he prostrated himself again in prayer before disappearing. The children did not tell anyone about these visits of the Angel, feeling an interior necessity to keep quiet about these events.
The Acid Test For Our Lady Of Fatima Apparitions
Never forget, the real test for the Fatima apparitions is the message itself and how it parallels or contradicts the message of the Bible! It is not if there are miracles or healings, but the message itself. When such is examined, the Fatima apparitions are shown to be of a spiritual different source than the one who gave us the Bible. Later Apparitions To Sister Lucia
The new bishop of the restored diocese of Leiria decided that it was best if Lucia was removed from Fatima, both to spare her from the continual questionings she had to endure, and to see what effect her absence would have on the numbers coming as pilgrims. Her mother agreed to her being sent away to school, and she left in May 1921 in great secrecy for Porto, where a school run by the Sisters of St. Dorothy was situated. She later became a sister in this congregation before joining the Carmelites.
On December 10, 1925, while at the Dorothean Convent in Pontevedra, Spain, Lucia had another apparition of the Blessed Mother, this time with the Child Jesus. She had returned to ask for the Communions of Reparation we now call the First Saturday Devotion, as she said she would during her July 13 apparition at Fatima. Mary told Lucia to announce that she promised to provide at the hour of death, the graces necessary for salvation to those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, confessed, received Holy Communion, recited five decades of the Rosary and kept her company while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary for 15 minutes, with the purpose of making reparation to her.
On June 13, 1929, Our Lady returned again as Sister Lucia was at prayer in the convent chapel at Tuy, Spain. This time, she appeared alongside a representation of the Holy Trinity. Mary spoke to her saying:

The Rosary And Purgatory
Also on the above occasion, Our Lady revealed to the three children that Francisco must say many Rosaries before he will go to Heaven and that a certain Amelia will be in Purgatory until the end of the world.

The difference between the Angels and Our Ladys apparitions.
The childrens physical, emotional and psychological experience with the Angel of Portugal and Our Lady were different. In her memoirs, Sister Lucia writes:
“I do not know why, but the fact is that the apparitions of Our Lady had a very different effect on us. There was the same intimate gladness, the same peace and happiness. But instead of physical weariness, we felt a certain expansive liveliness, a sense of glee instead of that annihilation in the Divine Presence, a certain communicative enthusiasm instead of that difficulty in speaking”
One stark contrast between the angel and Our Lady is their different natures. The former is pure spirit while the latter is flesh and spirit body and soul. The angels superior nature drained much energy from the children which left them in a state of annihilation.
Since the children are of the same nature as Our Lady, one could surmise that this may explain why the children were more at ease with Our Lady. The human nature they shared with Our Lady found a pleasing and lively consonance with her. One could feel assurance and confidence in Lucias observation and experience that, indeed, Our Lady was assumed into Heaven in both body and soul a dogma of the Faith.
