This question means the date of the manuscript, not of when the events inside the book took place. After all, we dont want to dive into the New Earth vs. Old Earth debate.

Of course, this question in itself can raise a number of disputes because people have not reached an agreement as to when Moses lived on earth. But most scholars place the compilation of the book somewhere between 1445 BC or 1290 BC.

Again, this entirely depends on which Pharaoh was in place when the ten plagues swept Egypt, and scholars have not solidly placed the contender for the throne.

In either case, we know the book is about 3,000 plus years old.

To my mind, one of the most valuable features of the ESV Study Bible are the introductions. The notes on individual verses are great, but interpretation will still go awry if we dont understand the books genre and author and audience and timeframe and purpose. Its also helpful to take a step back and to have concise introductions on some of the larger categories of the scriptural storyline: the Pentateuch , the historical books, the poetic and wisdom books, the prophetic books, the Gospels and Acts, the epistles, and Revelation.

The theme of the Pentateuch is announced in Genesis 12:1-3, the call of Abraham:

Go from your country . . . to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you . . . and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Here God promises Abraham four things:

a land to live in

numerous descendants

blessing for himself and

blessing through him for all the nations of the world.

Gods benefit for the nations is the climax or goal of the promises: the preceding promises of land, descendants, and personal blessing are steps on the way to the final goal of universal blessing.

The fulfillment of these promises to Abraham constitutes the story line of the Pentateuch.

It is a story of gradual and often difficult fulfillment.

He is the star and scepter who shall rise out of Israel .

Evidence Points To Joshua

But Joshua seems to be the most likely candidate for authorship of Deuteronomy 34. Most commentators and Jewish tradition agree. John Peter Lange points out that it is clear from Joshuas command in Joshua 1:8 that he meditated on and practiced Gods Word.

Joshua served as Mosess attendant since his youth, and likely grew to love Gods Word while serving Moses . Scripture also gives evidence of Joshuas literary activity in Deuteronomy 31:19 and Joshua 24:26.

Although God could have communicated the account of Mosess death and burial to any of the men listed above, a simple reading of Deuteronomy 34 seems to point Joshua as the most likely author.

What Is The Pentateuch

The word Pentateuch is a Greek term meaning “five scrolls” and refers to the five scrolls which comprise the Torah and which also comprise the first five books of the Christian Bible. These five books contain a variety of genres and were constructed from source material created over the course of millennia.

It is unlikely that these fives books were originally intended to be five books at all instead, they were probably considered all one work. The division into five separate volumes is believed to have been imposed by Greek translators. Jews today divide the text into 54 sections called parshiot. One of these sections is read each week of the year .

Is Jedp/documentary Hypothesis The Same Thing As The Tablet Model Of Genesis

These two ways of dividing Genesis are not the same at all. The Tablet Model is based on the Hebrew word toledoth, which appears eleven times in Genesis and helps to tie the whole book together as a single history. Our English Bibles translate toledoth variously as “this is the account” or “these are the generations” of Adam, Noah, Shem, etc. Scholars disagree about whether each toledoth follows or precedes the text with which it is associated, though we are inclined to agree with those scholars who conclude the former. In this case, the name associated with the toledoth is either the author or custodian of that section . Regardless, the eleven uses of toledoth unite the book as a history of the key events and people from to the time of Moses.

Unlike the JEDP model, the Tablet model shows a reverence for the text of Genesis and attention to these explicit divisions provided by the book itself. These divisions represent either oral tradition or written texts passed down by the Genesis patriarchs to their descendants, which Moses then used to put Genesis into its final form under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Can we be confident that Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament? If youre talking to a conservative Old Testament scholar like myself, almost all of us would ascribe to a view called essential or substantial Mosaic authorship. This means that, by and large, Moses was the actual author of the first five books of the Bible from Genesis to Deuteronomy. And what do we use to argue for this position? If youre thinking of some proofs, here are a couple.

Identify And Define The Problem

Within the scholarly work of the Bible, there is a field of study called Biblical Criticism. Biblical Criticism is the use of data to understand the Bible and the validity of its origin. There are different types of Biblical Criticism, like Textual Criticism, Historical Criticism, and Literary Criticism to name a few.

As early as the late seventeenth century, Moses authorship began to be formally questioned. Benedict Spinoza denied that Moses wrote the Pentateuch and many critical scholars joined him in the nineteenth century. It was Julius Wellhausen first to claim that the first five books were written by various people called the Jehovist , Elohimist , Priestly , and Deuteronomist with writing styles differentiating the authors. That was in the 1800s. These ideas have been around for quite some time.

Thats what the problem is, but how dangerous is this problem?

Did Moses Write The Torah

Although modern traditionalist Judaism uniformly affirms the divinity of the Torah, classical sources disagree on what role Moses had in its production.

These phrases, merged from Deuteronomy 4:44 and Numbers 9:23, are recited by traditional Jews each time the Torah is raised to be returned to the Aron Kodesh . To emphasize the significance of the statement, one frequently sees Jews point at the Torah. This is it, traditionalist Jews proclaim, admittedly a copy written by a scribe, but word for word and letter for letter identical with the one transcribed by Moses as God dictated it.

But how and when did this happen? The Talmud asks a very basic question about Moses role, starting with a quote from Deuteronomy:

When Was The Pentateuch Written

The texts that comprise the Pentateuch were written and edited by many different people over a long span of time. Most scholars tend to agree, however, that the Pentateuch as a combined, whole work probably existed in some form by the 7th or 6th century BCE, which puts it during the early Babylonian Exile or shortly before. Some editing and adding were still to come, but not long after the Babylonian Exile the Pentateuch was largely in its current form and other texts were being written.

Answering A Few Objections

A number of objections have been raised by the proponents of the documentary hypothesis. Space allows us to respond to only a few of the most common ones. But the other objections are just as flawed in terms of logic and a failure to pay careful attention to the biblical text.

The death of Moses is recorded in Deuteronomy 34:512. These are the last few verses of the book. Like other literature, past and present, it is not uncommon for an obituary to be added at the end of someone’s work after he dies, especially if he died very soon after writing the book. The obituary in no way nullifies the claim that the author wrote the book.

In the case of Deuteronomy, the author of the obituary of Moses was probably Joshua, a close associate of Moses who was chosen by God to lead the people of Israel into the Promised Land , and who was inspired by God to write the next book in the Old Testament. A similar obituary of Joshua was added by an inspired editor to the end of Joshua’s book (Joshua 24:2933

The Authorship Of The Remainder Of The New Testament

Outside of the Gospel and the Pauline Epistles are three sections of the New Testament: History, General Epistles, and Prophecy.

History here refers to the book of Acts, which describes the activities of Jesus disciples to include much of the narrative about Paul in the decades immediately after his death. According to Christian publisher Zondervan, the author claims to be Luke, the same man as the purported author of the Gospel bearing his name. It was likely written by the same man.

The term General Epistles, put simply, refers to epistles not written by Paul. According to Religious Tolerance, those books, purportedly written by Jesus disciples, such as Peter and James, were almost certainly compiled or written by others, in some cases decades or even centuries after their named writers deaths.

The New Testaments one book of prophecy is Revelation. Tradition holds that it was written by Jesus disciple, John, the author of a Gospel and other New Testament books bearing his name, according to Cross Examined.
