Both Catholics and Protestants believe that he was correct on a number of points and that he had a significant impact on Western history. HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH PRESERVE ITS COMPILED BOOK CALLED ...

Several reasons are proposed for the omission of these books from the canon. One is the support for Catholic doctrines such as Purgatory and Prayer for the dead found in 2 Maccabees. Another is that the Westminster Confession of Faith of 1646, during the English Civil War, actually excluded them from the canon.

The Authorship Of The Rest Of The Old Testament Is Unclear

The Old Testament’s section on history is followed by one sections: the Prophets, sometimes divided into Major and Minor . While tradition and, in some cases, teaching hold that they were written by the men whose names they bear, history has come up with a less-straightforward explanation.

For example, consider the major prophet Isaiah: as All That’s Interesting notes, the first part of his book may very well have been written by the man himself. The second part, however, represents a stark tonal shift, and may have been compiled by later editors. The third section bears linguistic similarity to Deuteronomy and may have been written by the author of that text.

For Jeremiah, ascribing authorship is more complicated. Could have been Jeremiah himself, could have been a man he mentions as having been one of his scribes, could have been one of the authors of sections of the Pentateuch. The uncertainty persists throughout the remainder of the Old Testament. Linguistic analysis points to these books having been written or compiled by people other than whom tradition and dogma claim, perhaps having been composed by anonymous authors who contributed to the Pentateuch.

Some Of The Pauline Writings Were Correctly Attributed

One of the most important figures in the New Testament is the Apostle Paul. The Jewish teacher who converted to Christianity traditionally wrote 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament, all of them “epistles” letters to various churches throughout the Mediterranean region. The narrative of those books provides much of the basis of Christian practice and doctrine two millennia later.

Did Paul actually write those books, as tradition and dogma hold? Actually, he probably did, according to History or at least, he probably wrote seven of them, anyway, the remaining six having been assigned his name by later editors, likely followers of Paul who wanted to lend authenticity to their writings by attaching Paul’s name to them. The “Pauline Epistles” believed to be almost certainly written by him are Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon, while the rest are believed to have been written by others.

HOLY BOOKS HAVE A REACH that goes far beyond what virtually all works of literature can ever accomplish. Unlike, say, The Great Gatsby, the Bible is a text upon which millions and millions of people have based their entire lives.

That fact can be good or bad, and its often been both over the many centuries throughout which Christians have been reading the Bible and Jews have been reading the Torah. But given its immense reach and cultural influence, its a bit surprising how little we really know about the Bibles origins. In other words, who wrote the Bible? Of all the mysteries surrounding the Bible, that one may be the most fascinating.

Were not completely ignorant, of course. Some books of the Bible were written in the clear light of history, and their authorship isnt terribly controversial. Other books can be reliably dated to a given period by either internal clues sort of the way no books written in the 1700s mention airplanes, for instance and by their literary style, which develops over time.

Religious doctrine, of course, holds that God himself is the author of or at least the inspiration for the entirety of the Bible, which was transcribed by a series of humble vessels. About the best that can be said for that notion is that if God really did write the Bible through a millennium-long sequence of various authors, he was certainly doing it the hard way.

General Outline And Major Themes

In its general framework, the Hebrew Bible is the account of Gods dealing with the Jews as his chosen people, who collectively called themselves Israel. After an account of the worlds creation by God and the emergence of human civilization, the first six books narrate not only the history but the genealogy of the people of Israel to the conquest and settlement of the Promised Land under the terms of Gods covenant with Abraham, whom God promised to make the progenitor of a great nation. This covenant was subsequently renewed by Abrahams son Isaac and grandson Jacob and centuries later by Moses . The following seven books continue their story in the Promised Land, describing the peoples constant apostasy and breaking of the covenant, the establishment and development of the monarchy in order to counter this, and the warnings by the prophets both of impending divine punishment and exile and of Israels need to repent. The last 11 books contain poetry, theology, and some additional history.

Book: Song Of Songs Or Song Of Solomon

The first verse tells us that Solomon either wrote it, it belonged to him, or it was written about him . The Bible tells us that Solomon wrote 1,005 songs , so it is reasonable to consider him the author of this book.

Some scholars question Solomons authorship and attribute it to an unknown author in the postexilic period, but there isnt strong evidence to support their claims.

When Written: If Solomon is indeed the author, then it was written around 950 B.C. If not, critics claim it was written in the fifth century B.C.

The next texts to examine when investigating who wrote the Bible are those of the biblical prophets, an eclectic group who mostly traveled around the various Jewish communities to admonish people and lay curses and sometimes preach sermons about everybodys shortcomings.

Some prophets lived way back before the Golden Age while others did their work during and after the Babylonian captivity. Later, many of books of the Bible attributed to these prophets were largely written by others and were fictionalized to the level of Aesops Fables by people living centuries after the events in the books were supposed to have happened, for example:

So there are two ways to answer the question, “When was the Bible written?” The first is to identify the original dates for each of the Bible’s 66 books. The second, the focus here is to describe how and when all 66 books were collected in a single volume.

How Were The New Testament Books Compiled

How did the early church decide which books to include in the New Testament?

The inspiration of Scripture is connected to the canon. We might make the case that the New Testament is inspired by God. We see Gods fingerprints on it, but exactly what books would fall into that category? How were the New Testament books chosen as part of the canon? This was a complicated process in some ways, but there are some general guidelines that drove the process.

A bunch of people who had authority in themselves did not get together and just pick the ones that they said were the right New Testament books. The books did not have authority in virtue of who chose them. That’s not the way it worked.

The word “canon” means authority. That is, what are the authoritative works in themselves in the New Testament era that tell us about God and His plan for salvation? Before they were books for the New Testament, what was the canon?

Christian leaders recognized the authority inherent in those books principally because of the apostolic connection that those books had

Jesus trained 12 people to take His message, and promised them in the upper room discourse in John 15 that He would bring to remembrance all the things that He had taught them so they would be able to communicate to others. Because of their close association with Jesus, this group of men became the standard, or the canon.
