What Was The Purpose Of The Ten Commandments

Exodus Chapter 20 For King James Bible Believing Christians (The Ten Commandments)

What is the principle behind the Ten Commandments? What do the Ten Commandments mean to you? Are you read to make this personal? The Ten Commandments do not mean anything unless we can invite their meaning into our lives.

There are three reasons why the Ten Commandments in the Bible are given. Every one of these reasons are personal and directed to every one of us.

1. The Ten Commandments were given to identify and expose sin.

What is sin? Is it serious? We tend to minimize sin. We tend to justify sin. We try to make excuses for sin. But the Ten Commandments shows us how to identify sin and remind us of its seriousness.

Romans 5:13

“For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.”

Sin is defined as breaking God’s law . But if there is no law, then there can be no sin. If God has not given us a law to follow, there would be nothing to break.

But then consider a second Bible verse:

Romans 7:7

“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ‘You shall not covet.'”

In essence, Paul is telling us that the law identifies sin. He then gives an example. If the Ten Commandments did not say, “You shall not covet,” then we would not know that covetousness is sin.

2. The Ten Commandments were given to govern Israel until Christ came.

So why do we keep the Ten Commandments today? We dont.

Matthew 22:37-40

Must Christians Keep The Ten Commandments

No. God gave his Law, including the Ten Commandments, specifically to the ancient nation of Israel. The Mosaic Law is not binding on Christians, and even Jewish Christians were released from the Law. * The Mosaic Law was replaced by the law of the Christ, which includes all that Jesus instructed his followers to do.Galatians 6:2 Matthew 28:19, 20.

What Mountain Were The Ten Commandments Given On

God gave the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19:20-25Exodus 19:20-25 And the LORD came down on mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount and Moses went up. And the LORD said to Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth on them. And Moses said to the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for you charged us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. And the LORD said to him, Away, get you down, and you shall come up, you, and Aaron with you: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest he break forth on them. So Moses went down to the people, and spoke to them.

Gods Gift Given In Repentance

The remedy that God has provided is the gift of forgiveness of sins through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This Gift of life is simply given to us if we trust or have faith in His work.

know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

As Abraham was justified before God we too can be given righteousness. But it does require that we repent. Repentance is often misunderstood, but repent simply means to change our minds involving a turning away from sin and a turning towards God and the Gift He offers. As the Bible explains:

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

The promise for you and me is that if we repent, turning to God, that our sins will not be counted against us and we will receive Life.

There Are Three Biblical Versions Of The Decalogue But None Of Them Contains A List Of 10 Items Never Mind Commandments

Bible Series The Ten Commandments

Finding the 10 commandments clearly listed in the Bible is a difficult, if not impossible, task. Not because they are cryptically hidden in some obscure, easy-to-overlook passage. Quite the contrary. It is rather because there are three different versions of what passes for them. One is found in Exodus , the second one in Deuteronomy , and the third one in Leviticus . To make matters worse, the three of them are organized and phrased quite differently. Getting a clean list of 10 items out of them is a delicate matter that requires exceptional hermeneutic and editorial skills.

Needless to say, depending on whether the reader is Jewish or Christian these commandments will be numbered differently. Catholics, for example, consider no other gods plus no graven images to be the first commandment. Lutherans agree, but other Protestant Christians separate this commandment in two, no graven images being a commandment on its own.

The first two versions of the Decalogue are the ones modern readers are more acquainted with. Broadly speaking, they are relatively similar. But this doesnt mean they dont differ from each other in important aspects. For example, in the book of Exodus, the Sabbath command is a relatively intellectual or spiritual one. In Deuteronomy, it is clearly more physical. The original text of Exodus reads to remember . Deuteronomy reads to keep, or to actively preserve .

The 10 Commandments In The Bible Transformed The World By Revelation

The Ten Commandments came to Israel by direct revelation from Almighty God. Because of the fear of Israel, Moses became the intermediary who received the stone tablets on which were recorded the Commandments. Until this point, ancient Near Eastern pagan religions were disseminated to people for practice by the cult of priesthood. Only the priests had access to the deities. The Ten Commandments is a significant part of the narrative that God has revealed to humanity about Himself, about ourselves, and the awful loss of relationship lost by sin. In short, to quote the late great Dr. Francis Schaeffer, There is a God and he has spoken.” This revelation from God to man was something altogether different than the superstitious, nature-power-focused cults of the Near Eastern world. Quite simply, mankind could think thoughts after God because God had revealed His mind to humankind. And everything changed.

How Many Versions Of The Ten Commandments Are There

1. How many versions of the Ten Commandments are there?

The Bible actually contains two complete sets of the Ten Commandments . In addition, Leviticus 19 contains a partial set of the Ten Commandments , and Exodus 34:10-26 is sometimes considered a ritual decalogue.

2. True or false the Golden Rule is one of the Ten Commandments.

False. The so-called “Golden Rule” doesn’t appear in the Old Testament but in the New Testament .

3. Does everyone enumerate the Ten Commandments the same way?

Actually several different traditions exist regarding how the commands should be enumerated. Jewish tradition considers verse 2 to be the first commandment and verses 3-4 as the second. Roman Catholic and Lutheran traditions consider verses 3-4 to be the first commandment but separate verse 17 into two commandments. Protestant and Reformed traditions consider verse 2 a prologue and separate verses 3-4 into the first and second commandments, retaining verse 17 as one command.

4. What is significant about the way the Ten Commandments are arranged?

The commandments have a specific structure. The first four deal with one’s relationship with God. The remaining commandments address one’s relationship with humans. The two relationships are inseparable elements, fundamental to being a follower of God.

5. Which of the commands did Jesus consider the most important?

Three Types Of Biblical Law

The Lord Jesus, as well as the Apostle Paul, did affirm that the law was fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the New Testament is a witness to affirming the continuation of the law. For St. Paul wrote, For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being . The issue is easily settled by merely admitting that there is both continuity and discontinuity in the way the Bible speaks of the law. Certain laws are fulfilled. Others continue to have a place. All of them serve the Gospel of Christ.

A careful examination of the use of the word law demonstrates the answer. Certain laws that dealt with Old Testament ceremonial life were fulfilled in Christ. Other laws, relating to the time of Moses, when Israel had no king but God, have been called, Civil Laws . The other category of law in the Bible is that critical code of living that is before us in this article: the Ten Commandments. Those commandments form a Moral Law that continues to this day.

The Westminster Confession of Faith , one of the most concise, authoritative doctrinal statements in Church history , summarizes the matter in its Chapter 19:

Our study is focused on the moral law of God, i.e., the Ten Commandments.

Why Should You Care

An Atheist Reads the Bible 12 The 10 Commandments

The reason why some people oppose the Ten Commandments is that their lives are out of harmony with God’s will as expressed in them. Paul says in Romans 7:12 that the commandment is holy, and just, and good. And in verse 14 he says that it is spiritual.

You see, our obligations are not merely to a law, but to Him who enacted that law. God is good, so His commandments are also good. The evil is in us, not in God or in His commandments.

Why Are There Two Different Versions Of The Ten Commandments In The Bible

Q. I saw an interesting video about God telling Moses to write some additional commandments on stone tablets. The first version was given to Moses when the Israelites got to Mount Sinai. We call these the Ten Commandments, and theyre whats etched on all the stone monuments we see. But Moses broke those tablets in anger. The Lord called him back up onto the mountain and told him what to chisel on some new stones. The Bible also calls these the Ten Commandments. But most of them are different. Why?

Youre absolutely right. I never noticed this until you asked about it, but there is a second version of the Ten Commandments thats different from the first!

Heres the first list:1. You shall have no other gods before me.2. You shall not make images and bow down and worship them.3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.4. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.5. Honor your father and your mother.7. You shall not commit adultery.8. You shall not steal.9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Heres what I think is going on. The first version of the Ten Commandments provides a prelude or overture to the whole body of law that God delivers to Moses at Mount Sinai. In Exodus, this body of law is described as the Book of the Covenant.

You Shall Make No Idols

Bible reference – Exodus 20:4-6:You shall not make for yourself a carved imageany likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Explanation: Is there anything wrong with this commandment? Millions in the world need to hear this commandment. Jesus said in John 4:24, God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

All representations of the true God or false deities for the purpose of worship are forbidden. An idol image degrades God and it degrades man. God’s jealousy against false gods is but infinite love which allows no rival for our heart’s affection.

The 10 Commandments In The Bible Transformed The World Through Education

When God gave the Ten Commandments, He instructed Israel to teach these things to the children. Deuteronomy 6 remains the preeminent pedagogical guide for human beings.

When your son asks you in time to come, What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you? then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaohs slaves in Egypt. And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

God taught that the Ten Commandments should be modeled before the children in such a way as it causes them to ask, “what does this mean for me?” Then, the father the parents are able to say how the meta-narrative of Israel and mankind is also the personal narrative of the child’s family.

Are The Ten Commandments Relevant Today

Pin on Words to live by

Yes. Because the Ten Commandments reveal Gods thinking, we can benefit from studying them. The Ten Commandments are based on reliable principles that will never go out-of-date. In fact, many of these principles underlie the teachings of what is commonly called the New Testament.See Principles from the Ten Commandments reflected in the New Testament.

Jesus taught that the entire Mosaic Law, including the Ten Commandments, rested on two fundamental commandments. He said: You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments the whole Law hangs. So although Christians are not expected to observe the Mosaic Law, they are commanded to love God and their fellow humans.John 13:34 1 John 4:20, 21.

Using God’s Name Improperly

This can be understood to mean cursing or using profanity which includes the name of God.Many languages have expressions of anger or dismay that include the word “God”. In addition, many times people “swear to God” to try to convince others they are telling the truth. Another offense might be to say that “God told me” to do something when He didn’t. The actual name of God in the Old Testament was YHWH, sometimes pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. Pious Jews refrain from using this name or even the word God, for which they substitute G_d. This is to avoid using God’s name in a way that might break this commandment.

Jews honor the Sabbath from sundown on Friday until the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night, the seventh day of the week on the Jewish calendar.

In the New Testament Jesus did things that made the Sabbath command different from the other nine. Jesus seemed to reduce its demands, unlike some other commandments where he made them stronger. Jesus was often criticized for healing on the Sabbath or doing other things. He said that “the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath”. Doing good on the Sabbath seemed to be praised and practiced by Jesus. In that way he disobeyed some of the strict interpretations that had become common in His day.

Most Christians honor the Sabbath on Sunday to remember the Resurrection of Jesus on the first day of the week on the Jewish calendar.

Here Are Lists Of The 10 Commandments As Recorded In Exodus 20 And Deuteronomy 5 We Also Include A List Of The Commandments In Short Form And Lists With Jewish And Catholic Numbering Of The 10 Commandments

These 10 beneficial laws were given by the Creator God to show us how to live a better life now and please God forever.

God gave the 10 Commandments from Mount Sinai, accompanied by smoke, earthquakes and the blast of a trumpet to emphasize the importance of these laws. Moses recorded Gods words in Exodus 20 and recounted the event again in Deuteronomy 5. There are only slight differences of emphasis in the accounts. Both versions are listed below, along with a list of the commandments in short form.

The numbering of the commandments on the first three lists below reflects the numbering used in much of the Christian world, though Catholics, Jews and others use various numbering systems .

Were The 10 Commandments Abolished In The New Testament

No, many scriptures in the New Testament show that Jesus and the apostles upheld the 10 Commandments, not as ceremonial legalism or as a way to earn salvation, but as essential laws to govern a Christians life. Many scriptures show that every one of the 10 Commandments is reinforced in the New Testament.

Most people acknowledge that Christians should obey most of the 10 Commandments, including those that prohibit worshipping other gods, murder, stealing, adultery and lyingjust to name a few of the instructions spoken by God to the ancient Israelites from Mount Sinai. It is only the Fourth Commandment to keep the seventh-day Sabbath that some claim is not repeated in the New Testament and therefore is no longer required of Christians.
