Learning To Forgive: How To Let Go And Move Forward
It happens to the best of us: someone has hurt you in some way and you have to chart that long, complicated path toward forgiveness.
Getting to the point of forgiveness can be a journey in itself one that is rewarding once you can honestly say to the person, and yourself, that you have forgiven him or her for the offense that person did to you.
With forgiveness, we are instructed by Jesus in scripture that if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you . He reiterated the importance of forgiveness again when Peter asked how many times to forgive a brother in Christ. I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven .
But the real question isnow what? What do you do now that you have forgiven the person but dont want a repeat of history with him or her? By forgiveness, does that mean you are only setting yourself up to be hurt by this person again, to be his or her doormat?
It is possible to move forward after forgiving someone, while still protecting yourself from getting hurt again. It takes an evaluation of the relationship, setting boundaries, and finding true and lasting peace.

How To Forgive Yourself For Hurting Someone
First things first confession. Speak directly with the person you hurt. Begin by naming the offense, the damage done, as well as the regret. Then say youre sorry. This conversation needs to happen with God as well .
Second, do a new thing, also known as repenting. Repenting is turning away from the mistake or bad decision and trying to do better next time.
Third, do some self reflecting. The best part about past mistakes and bad decisions, is learning and growing. Examine the motives of your heart prayerfully with God.
Finally, while your prayerfully coming to God, pray Bible verses that highlight you are forgiven. This helps us put our minds on truth rather than self loathing. Self loathing is unproductive and not part of Gods purpose for you.

Remember Youre Not The First Or Last
When youve been hurt, its common to feel like youre the only one who has ever been wronged in this way. In fact, its likely that this transgression has been made many, maybe even millions of times before throughout human history. Making mistakes is part of our shared human experience. Remembering you are not alone in experiencing this kind of pain can help to loosen your grip on your resentment.
Find Peace In The Progress
Finally, you make it to the last step, which is finding the peace in the situation, with your friend, and with how God is directing the outcome of everything. This is a step where no matter what the status is with your friendship, you can be forthright in saying you can pray for him/her and hope for Gods blessings to come into his/her life.
When you have reached this point in moving forward from forgiveness, you find security in knowing you are in a healthy place again. You arent thinking as much of your friends offense, maybe you are gaining trust again in your friendship, or maybe you felt peace in concluding this friendship that needed to end. The bottom line isyoure okay again.

Bouncing Back From Failure
Come Back To God First.
One of the most valuable things about scripture is how it paints a clear picture of the nature of God. It doesnt matter what weve done or how far weve gone, Hes always with us and Hes always welcoming us back. Its illustrated so vividly in the story of the prodigal son. He decided to go back to his father after the biggest failure, thinking he isnt worthy to be called a son, but while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him . We dont even make it all the way back before the Father comes running toward us!
If you continue reading the story of the prodigal son, youll see another character his older brother is not as welcoming. He is disgruntled over the fact that his father would be so celebratory when his younger son had acted so disrespectfully. He doesnt think his younger brother deserves forgiveness, or at least not a party. The same is often true in our own stories. There are people weve hurt or who witnessed the damage of our actions and theyre definitely not ready to throw a party when we go to them to ask for forgiveness. The amazing news is that we actually dont have to go to them first. We get to go to God first, the Father who runs toward us with love and forgiveness before we even say a word.

Understanding And Accepting What God Has Taught You Through This Process
The peace also comes with awareness and acceptance of what lesson God imparted to you through this experience. You realize that the heartache and anger from what your friend committed against you was never used by God to hurt you, but instead to guide you, to grow you, and to prosper you as you move forward in His plan for you. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will guide your path .
Even if the most drastic step was taken and you ended the friendship because of what happened, or due to an accumulation of events, peace from God can even emerge there in knowing that forgiveness was given before the friendships conclusion and you ended on better terms than with a screaming match.
Two Kinds Of Forgiveness
There are twoand only twobiblical categories of forgiveness: others forgiveness and Gods forgiveness. Horizontal and vertical.
Horizontal forgiveness marks us as Christians. Seeking the forgiveness of others is not optional. Forgiving one another is not optional. Paul writes:
Put on then, as Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Its not enough to ask forgiveness from God we must also ask forgiveness from those weve injured.
I have good newssuch good news. You dont need to forgive yourself, because you cant forgive yourself.
As important as horizontal forgiveness is, even more fundamental is vertical forgiveness, which comes from God alone. After committing the heinous double sin of adultery and murder against Bathsheba and Uriah, David cries out to God: Against you, you only, have I sinned! . How can David say this? Is he minimizing his horrifying sins against Uriah and Bathsheba?
David realizes that as awful as his sin is horizontally, its much worse vertically. He has profoundly offended his Creatorand the Creator of Uriah and Bathshebaby devaluing one life and snuffing out another. He has offended his righteous, covenant-making God with his wicked, covenant-breaking actions.

Here are eight ways to work on that.
Why Is It So Hard To Forgive Ourselves
Not forgiving ourselves will not make us worthier of redemption than someone who is able to find rest in the finished work of Christ. Refusing to forgive oneself is not an act of humility but an exhausting, prideful rejection of Gods justice and his love.

“I know God forgives me, I can’t forgive myself.”
There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy .
The message of the gospel is that Jesus came to save sinners. He paid for our sins so that all who call on Jesus as Savior and repent experience forgiveness from God eternally. This message involves a few key implications.
God has established what is right and what is wrong. He has found us guilty, but the price was paid at the cross. A godly grief desires change , asks forgiveness through the Son, and does not attempt to earn forgiveness on the basis of personal merit.
Christians know this message, yet many still wrestle with self-forgiveness, and while this can look like humility, pride is the culprit.

Two: Establishing Clear Boundaries
When you feel you have reached the point of having a clear understanding of the terms of your relationship with this person, the next step is to determine boundaries for how to interact moving forward. Of course, consideration must be made if you work with this person or it is a family member or family friend.
The boundaries you set will determine how much you see of this person, whether it is with a group or alone, what setting you see each other in, or even if you can even continue on with a face-to-face friendship anymore.
For example, if your friend mainly wants to only spend time with you in questionable areas , you could set a boundary that you will only see him/her in settings that are healthy for your Christian witness as well as your relationship. If the persons facilities get impaired in certain situations, or a group of people around prompts him/her to poke fun at you, these facts must also be included in figuring out how and where you spend time with the person.

Believe That You Are Forgiven
But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:19
The word of God is simple, you either believe it or you dont. God and His word are one, you either believe and trust in Him or you dont.
You cant say that you trust God and not believe in His word.
Guess what His word says?
He is faithful to forgive you.
It doesnt matter how big your mistake was, or even if you think that what you did is unforgivable. When you repent, God forgives you.
And it has nothing to do with you, He forgives you because Jesus already paid the price for your mistake when He died on the cross for you.
His blood has the power to clean you from all unrighteousness.
Sin is real, and so is our guilt before Godand one of the worst things we can do is deny this or pretend it isnt true. The Bible says, There is no difference for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .
But an even worse thing is to turn our backs on Gods offer of forgiveness and salvation! We can do this by denying it or refusing it, of coursebut we also can do it by doubting Gods promise to forgive us when we truly repent and put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. But Gods promise to forgive us is clear, and He does not lie. The Bible says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness .

How To Forgive Yourself
And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. Genesis 45:5
This love that says, Come near is lavished over each of the brothers. And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. After that his brothers talked with him .
This is an amazing contrast to the beginning of the story when we are told that Josephs brothers could not speak peacefully to him . For years the brothers had no interest in speaking with him. Then, when they see that he is lord in Egypt, they are silent because theyre overwhelmed by their own guilt and fear and shame.
Then Joseph strengthened his brothers by helping them to forgive themselves. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life .
Have you ever said, I know that God forgives me, but I cant forgive myself? The root problem here is always pride. You are putting yourself above God. You are saying, The blood of Christ may be good enough for God, but it is not good enough for me.
So heres how you forgive yourself for the things that bring you guilt and shame today: If the blood of Christ is good enough to satisfy God in relation to this sin of mine, why should it not be good enough to satisfy me?
If you have someone who wants to reconcile with you, show him your love as Joseph did to his brothers. Help her to be at peace with herself.
