Bible Verses About Cornerstone

Why Is Jesus Called “The Cornerstone” in 1 Peter 2:6-7?

just as it is written,Behold, I lay in Ziona stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,And he who believes in Himwill not bedisappointed.

Therefore thus says the Lord God,Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone,A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.

This precious value, then, is for you who believe but for those who disbelieve,The stone which the buildersrejected,This became the very corner stone, and,A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed.

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?Tell Me, if you have understanding,Who set its measurements? Since you know.Or who stretched the line on it?On what were its bases sunk?Or who laid its cornerstone,

They will not take from you even a stone for a cornerNor a stone for foundations,But you will be desolate forever, declares the Lord.

let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the deadby this name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the stone which wasrejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. And there is salvation in no one else for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

What Is The Atonement

As spoken at the outset of this article, the atonement is at its core, a profound demonstration of Gods love. We read:

But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us .

Along with this truth, the atonement also speaks of sacrifice. This sacrifice, i.e., the atoning death of Christ, is the central theme of the Bible. Book after book, through the prophets and others, they spoke and wrote of it in some way.

The words atone or atonement appear over one-hundred times in Scripture. It has a rich meaning at its root it means to cover. There are many other words associated with it, among them are: cleanse, forgive, be merciful, and reconcile. It has been stated that the atonement is the axis on which all other doctrines revolve. This is because without what Christ did on the cross, there would be no need for any other doctrine.

What We Can Learn

A cornerstone:

Is the first. Jesus Christ is the Firstborn of all the Fatherâs children , the first to be resurrected , the one who was to âgo to prepare a place for â in His Fatherâs house , the âBeloved and Chosen from the beginningâ , and âthe author and finisher of our faithâ .

Unites. Jesus Christ âinviteth ⦠all to come unto himâ . The Atonement of Jesus Christ allows us to repent, become sanctified through the Holy Ghost, and be reunited with Heavenly Father. The Apostle Paul showed that Jesus Christ, as the cornerstone, was the connecting point for the two âwallsâ of the Church in that day: the Apostles of the New Testament and the prophets of the Old Testament, perhaps illustrating the mix of Gentile and Jewish converts . The prophets and apostles of today, along with those of old, help unite us in Christâin His doctrine, His service, and His Church.

Aligns. Jesus Christ âmarked the path and led the way, and evâry point definesâ . He is our guide and our lawgiver, the one whose commandments we obey and whose words we heed.

Strengthens. Jesus Christ has taken upon Himself our sins so that we can be forgiven if we will repent. In this way, He strengthens us by removing the ill effects of sin. In addition, âthe enabling power of the Atonement strengthens us to do and be good and to serve beyond our own individual desire and natural capacityâ .

What Is A Cornerstone

A cornerstone is often used to describe Jesus in the Bible and the reason for that is because Jesus is the foundation and the most important part of building His Church.

Let us discuss the different areas in the Bible where Jesus was referred to as a cornerstone.

In Isaiah 28:16-7, we can read that a Messiah was referred to as a cornerstone,

So this is what the sovereign Lord says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation the one who trusts will never be dismayed. I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line

In context, God was speaking to the people of Judah and He was promising them a foundation for their lives as long as they trusted Him. God, here, is referring to Jesus, His only begotten Son, and His promise to give His Son as the foundation of their lives.

He also emphasized that Jesus would bring justice to the righteous. This means that as long as we follow Jesus, the layout of our lives will be straightened just as how a cornerstone would be significant in straightening the path of a construction masonry.

In the New Testament, we can also read that Jesus was referred to as a cornerstone, specifically in Ephesians 2:19-21, as Paul said,

In this passage, Paul says that Christ is the chief cornerstone and the foundation of the members of the Church of Christ. He alone joins the entire building of the Church to become a Holy temple.

What Does Atonement Mean For Christians

A Christian Stone Mason’s Look At The Cornerstone – Michael Keith

What is the most important aspect of this great salvation which we have? Is it the fact that we are going to heaven? Or that we are now the recipients of a peace that passes all understanding? Or even that that we can now enjoy intimate fellowship with the God of the universe?

While all these things are blessings above measure, the fact that our sins are forgiven stands above them all! Had our sins not been forgiven, none of those things would be possible. Do you recall Jesus words to the seventy as they returned from evangelizing?

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name. He replied, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. .

Concerning this event, the great nineteenth-century revivalist Charles Spurgeon states:

He did not mean in the present instance to censure their joy in their success, but only to make it subordinate to another rejoicing, and to prevent its growing to excess.

For us, atonement is the difference between true life, and death between peace, and misery between guilt, and forgiveness. Atonement means everything.

Jesus Is The Cornerstone: What Does This Mean For Us

Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. Ephesians 2:20

My church small group is currently reading through and studying the book of Ephesians. When reading over Ephesians 2 recently, a section near the end stood out to mea part describing Jesus as the cornerstone. I love analogies, so I decided to study this a little more.

The analogy given in the passage describes the followers of Jesus as a house, a temple where God now lives by his Holy Spirit . Paul describes us as being built on a foundation of those who went before us, the apostles and prophets, and Jesus is the cornerstone.

I learned that a cornerstone, sometimes called a foundation stone, is the first stone laid for a structure. I read that this was the most important part of this ancient construction method. A cornerstone was generally a very large and solid stone, typically larger and sturdier than all other stones. This stone took the most care and precision to lay because of its importance to all of the other stones and to the structure as a whole.

The cornerstone is put into place with all of the other stones then laid in reference to that stone. It sets the direction and the orientation of the entire structure. The cornerstone ensures proper alignment when all of the other stones line up with it. A cornerstone is a rock upon which the weight of the entire structure rests.

How Is Jesus The Cornerstone

Just like a literal cornerstone, Christ should be followed in order for us Christians, to live a straight path. If a cornerstone is not followed, the path of construction will end up in demise.

Similarly, if we do not follow Christ, our path will end up in destruction and we will definitely go astray.

However, there are times that we do not follow Christ, yet He is still the cornerstone of our lives. This is written in Psalm 118:22, The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone

What the passage means is that even if we do not constantly acknowledge Him as our cornerstone, Jesus will ultimately light our lives and reveal that He is. This is His love for us. He will always show mercy because He loves us.

People who care for us in this world will be the vessel for us to see Christ as our cornerstone and ultimately, we cannot escape from the fact that Christ is the foundation of our lives.

This is the truth to that matter. And the reason for such truth is again, the promise of God to give us a foundation of our lives through His Son, Jesus.

Jesus Christ The Cornerstone

by Spirit & Truth | Sep 26, 2013 | christchristianitycornerstonejesusleadership

In both the Old and New Testaments, God figuratively refers to Jesus Christ as a stone. However, before we delve into some of what God has pictured for us, it helps if we think of stones the way the ancients did. Modern society does not have the awe and respect for large stones that the ancients did. Nowadays, if a boulder is in an inconvenient place, we just get a bulldozer and move it, or we blow it apart with dynamite, which was simply not available to do in the ancient world. Usually an inconvenient boulder in the road would be inconvenient for generations, and the large stones in the foundation and walls of buildings could only be set in place by armies of men working under the orders of the king.

When God refers to His Son with various stone analogies, it is important that we take the time to reflect upon what God is saying and what that means to our lives, because just as a real stone can be viewed from different angles, so can the Rock, Jesus Christ .

The Cornerstone in the Old TestamentHundreds of years before the Messiah was born, the Psalms contained an accurate prophecy that although he would be rejected by the builders, he would become the cornerstone.

Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Zechariah 10:4From Judah will come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler.

What Being Our Cornerstone Means To Us

The Cornerstone: Muhammad or Jesus?

Jesus is our standard, our measurement guide, and that to which we are to align and conform. Just as a cornerstone straightens the path of a structure, we can live a straight path with Jesus example to guide us. He sanctifies us and straightens up the crooked parts of our lives when we align with him and his ways. If we dont align with him and his ways, the structure could be unstable, shifting, and prone to falling. Jesus also ensures the stability of our faith and salvation. We can lean and rest on him, and we will be stable and wont fall. Jesus will take the weight off of us when its too much to bear. We can be strong because he is strong. Lastly, he will also unite all those who follow him together, if we will allow him. We are stronger together as one.

There are multiple verses throughout scripture, both in the Old and New Testaments about Jesus being the cornerstone.

Peter Lesson 12chief Cornerstone Or Stumbling Stone

Lesson 12Chief Cornerstone or Stumbling Stone?

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:6-8

Lesson Goal: To learn that the One who was rejected by so many offers life to all.

In todays passage, Peter turns his attention to three Old Testament passages, quoting these texts with application to the truth that he writes. In verses 6-8 he quotes Isaiah 28:16, which refers to Messiah as the Cornerstone who is believed upon without disappointment , then Psalm 118:22-23 which refers to the stone rejected by the builders that became the Cornerstone , and finally from Isaiah 8:14, which warns that those who reject the stone will stumble over it and be offended by it .

We learned in verse five that Jesus Christ is the foundation stone that determines the placement of all living stones. To help us understand todays passage, we must remember that in ancient construction, the cornerstone was first situated on the foundation and then all the other stones were aligned to it thus, as part of the house of God, we need to keep focus aligned to the cornerstone.

Peter points us to Isaiah 28:16, to which the Apostle Paul also made reference in Romans 9:33. Both Peter and Paul saw Isaiah 28:16 as an important messianic statement that promised when Christ came, He would be the cornerstone of Gods now spiritual house, which is made up of believers .

Read Acts 4:8-12.
