The term virtue in Greek often refers to moral excellence and goodness. Arthur F. Holmes describes virtues in the following way:

A virtue is a right inner disposition, and a disposition is a tendency to act in certain ways. Disposition is more basic, lasting and pervasive than the particular motive or intention behind a certain action. It differs from a sudden impulse in being a settled habit of mind, an internalized and often reflective trait. Virtues are general character traits that provide inner sanctions on our particular motives, intentions and outward conduct.16

There are many key ideas in this definition, but for our purposes here I want to focus on two. First, a virtue is a tendency, stemming from who you are at your core level, to act in certain ways. Second, it is not simply, therefore, an impulse, good or bad, but rather a settled habit of mind. Third, it has a function of providing judgment on motives and outward actions. Virtues, then, relate to who we are as people our character.

The Theological Virtues of faith, hope, and charity are those virtues that relate directly to God. These are not acquired through human effort but, beginning with Baptism, they are infused within us as gifts from God. They dispose us to live in relationship with the Holy Trinity. Living A Virtuous Life

As we look at what the Scriptures have to say about living a virtuous life, we go to the letters of Peter.

From 1 Peter 1:15-16, we learn that as we follow Jesus we grow in holiness, righteousness and justice. As followers of Jesus, living lives that are good for us and also pleasing to God becomes part of our daily routine.

Moving forward to 2 Peter 1:3-11, we learn that even the power to grow in Christ does not come from us, but from God. This is explained through salvation. As we choose to believe in Jesus, we are filled with the Holy Spirit who empowers us with Gods goodness and ability to escape the corruption of the world due to its evil desires.

From verse 5 onward, we learn these things: make every effort to add to your faith goodness , and to goodness, knowledge and to knowledge, self-control and to self-control, perseverance and to perseverance, godliness and to godliness, brotherly kindness and to brotherly kindness, love.

For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

These words from Peter were written to all believers and are as meaningful today as they were to followers of Jesus in the past. They dont happen all at once. They are stepping stones to finding Gods love. Gods love leads us to live rightly and to treat one another as God treats us through his love.

In Christianity, virtue isdefined as the habitual and firm disposition to do the good. While traditional philosophy says that virtue is the conformity of life and conduct with the principles of morality. It allows people to perform good acts and give the best of themselves. It is embedded in our being and influences the way we act and react to things around us.

In short, our virtues are the good things we do that define us.

Lately, Ive been reading about Gods virtues stories based on Scripture and personal stories of how following the virtues taught to us by God have helped people in a number of circumstances.

As Ive thought on this subject, it has led me to read more Scriptures that gave me further understanding. Today, I share with you, my friends, the wonderful words from the Bible that speak so clearly to us today.

Although the word virtue is not often heard today, it is synonymous with the word godliness. When we live a life that is close to God, following godly ways, our lives become virtuous. When speaking of virtues, we are speaking of growing in our thoughts and actions that connect us with God and his grace.

According to theologians, there are 7 Heavenly Virtues, though you wont find them named this way anywhere in the Bible. They are made up of what is known as the Cardinal Virtues and the Theological Virtues.

Whereas the Cardinal Virtues date to the teachings of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, these same four virtues are found in Scripture. Scripture tells us it is the Holy Spirit who enhances them within us. These virtues are prudence , temperance , fortitude and justice .

There are three Theological Virtues that do not arise with humans but are given to us by Christ from God. They are faith, hope and love. We find them in 1 Corinthians 13:13 where it tells us that the greatest of these is love.

Hebrews 11:13-14: All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.

She Is Faithful To God

  • “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised” .

A virtuous woman serves God with all of her heart, mind, and soul. She seeks His will for her life and follows His ways. She watches her tongue and speaks with wisdom. She understands that beauty is a temporary thing.

What makes a lady respected is that she fears God and this fear makes her soul beautiful. This fear of the Lord is a source of her wisdom and goodness.

She cares about eternity more than life on Earth. She is compassionate and unselfish. The income she earns is shared with the poor and needy.
