The Fallen Human Condition

While Paul can be taken as describing the morals and practices of the Greco-Roman world he has been raised up to evangelize, these verses describe observable human behavior as judged by Gods standards in all places and times. Heinous qualities and deeds such as those Paul describes are not confined to certain eras, geographies, or demographics but are endemic to the fallen human condition.

It should be recalled that Paul is an apostle of the Lord Jesus, who stated similarly: From within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person . Paul in this section of Romans is concurring with a view of the human heart that he has not invented.

Jesus spoke of what comes from within. Paul speaks in Romans 1:29 of people being filled with and full of. These respective descriptions amount to the same bleak portrait. Paul speaks first of unrighteousness, the opposite of Gods righteousness to which he has already referred . This unrighteousness could serve as the heading for all of the characteristics and practices that follow.

Human sexuality is a gift not to be squandered.

What Does This Mean In Practice

Most Christian churches hold the position that you should Love the sinner, but hate the sin. This is generally interpreted to mean that Christians should show love and compassion to homosexuals, but that homosexuals should not engage in sexual activity. This is because most churches teach that sex should only happen within marriage, which the Church defines as being between a man and a woman.

The Roman Catholic Church states:

quote This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoidedHomosexual people are called to chastity.Catechism of the Catholic Church 1992, paras 2358-9

view on homosexuality is accepting:

quote Where there is a genuine tenderness, an openness to responsibility, and the seed of commitment, God is surely not shut out. Can we not say that God can enter any relationship in which there is a measure of selfless love? To reject people on the grounds of their sexual behaviour is a denial of Gods creation.Towards a Quaker View of Sex, 1963

Most Christians will take a position somewhere between these two views. Some churches offer support to homosexuals in leading a chaste life, while others readily accept openly homosexual people in positions of authority. However, few Christian groups will give a definitive statement on the issue as it would cause divisions within the community.

Biblical Passages That Mention Homosexuality:

Biblical passages that mention homosexuality:

Leviticus 18:22 Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman that is detestable.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death their blood will be on their own heads.

Romans 1:24-27 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

I Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men.

1 Timothy 1:10 For the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.

Giving Up Sugar Tasting Gods Goodness

As a latchkey kid, Wendy Speake turned to sugar for comfort. Every Friday, she would pedal to the candy show and use her allowance to fill her bag with candy. And one day, when she was older and a mom of three young boys, she came to realize that she was still pedaling away from her stress and using sugar as comfort, instead of turning to Jesus. She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change. In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.

The Argument Often Used

Lets examine the type of argument youll have heard to say that the Bible condemns homosexuality. It usually takes the form of

  • This is X
  • The Bible condemns X
  • Therefore we should condemn X.

This is murder. The Bible condemns murder. Therefore we should condemn murder. And who isnt against murder?

Lets use a different example.

  • Mortgages are a form of money-lending.
  • The Bible condemns money-lending.
  • Therefore we should condemn mortgages.

Hang on a second we dont. Have you ever heard a sermon against mortgages? Are mortgages denounced on Christian podcasts, Christian TV channels, Christian books? But why not?

Mortgages are a form of moneylending. And the Bible condemns moneylending. Well, the reason we dont is in part down to the great protestant reformer, Calvin.

What Does The Bible Really Say About Homosexuality

What the Bible says about homosexuality | Kristin Saylor & Jim O’Hanlon | TEDxEdgemontSchool

Actually, a whole lot less than you might imagine! That may be hard to believe given the fierce rhetoric Christians often employ when talking about homosexuality, but there are really only seven passages in the Bible that refer directly to homosexual behavior, and none of them are associated with Jesus. Compare that to the more than 250 verses on the proper use of wealth or more than 300 on our responsibility to care for the poor and work for justice, and you appreciate quickly that homosexuality was not exactly a major theme of the Bible.

Nevertheless, these seven passages have been poured over by conservative and liberal scholars alike and have occasioned considerable conversation and controversy. In order to review what the Bible actually says about homosexuality, as well as what others are saying about it, I’ll group similar verses below and give a brief summary of the major differences in interpretation. Then, I’ll outline the four most common stances Christians take regarding these biblical passages in general, as these positions greatly influence how one interprets individual verses.

Old Testament Narrative

The Holiness Code of Leviticus

New Testament Ethics

Understanding The Root Of Your Childs Misbehavior

He discusses the benefits of allowing your kids to learn from real-life consequences and describes the importance of understanding your childs temperament based on his birth order.

Those Who Consider Themselves To Be Homosexual By Sexual Orientation Should Practice Sexual Celibacy

Many will counter that I have no idea how difficult such a lifestyle decision would be. Theyre right.

But given that I understand the Bible to teach clearly that homosexuality is an unbiblical lifestyle, the only conclusion I can draw is that the practice of this lifestyle will lead the person out of the will of God and into harmful behavior.

Abstinence is, by this logic, the option that is in that persons best personal interest. I can only hope that my heart is clear in offering this suggestion. My desire is not to condemn but to offer biblical truth as I understand it.

This article is offered with the prayer that the Lord of Scripture will use his word to bring healing, hope, and help to hearts and homes troubled by the issue of homosexuality. To the degree that these thoughts have shed more light than heat, my prayer will be answered.

Homosexuality In The New Testament: 1 Corinthians : 9

The next New Testament text typically included in our topic is 1 Corinthians 6:9-10: Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Male prostitutes could refer to men who sold themselves sexually, either in heterosexual or homosexual activity. As translated by the New International Version, the word would not necessarily speak to our subject, as prostitution of any kind is almost universally understood to be immoral.

But the Greek word so translated is more likely a technical term for the passive partner in homosexual activity . And so it may well refer to one who engages in homosexuality, without a necessary connection to prostitution. The activity it describes makes it harder to assert that Paul had no concept of homosexual orientation but meant his words only for heterosexuals who practice homosexual behavior.

Why We Dont Condemn Mortgages

Homosexuality, the Bible, the Truth : The Bible Does Not Condemn ...

Before the reformation, about 500 years ago, the church pretty universally thought that moneylending was wrong, and always wrong. And they thought the Bible said that it was always wrong.

Money-lending, usury, was a mortal sin. You couldnt get a Christian burial if you lent money for profit. And this carried on into the reformation. Martin Luther denounced lending money for profit. He saw it as wicked.

But in the reformation, lots of people began to question this. Lots of reasons for this, to do with economic change. Anyway, a friend of Calvins wrote to him, asking him if lending money for interest could ever be OK.

And Calvin wrote back saying yes, in certain circumstances, it might be. This was incendiary stuff the letter itself remained private until a decade after Calvins death.

But how did Calvin reach this conclusion?

His answer covered a range of areas these include the authority of the Bible compared with interpretations of the Bible the need to understand what the writings meant in their original context and to their original audience that you need to look behind prohibitions to see what the purpose of them is and also how does all this fit in with justice and love.

What Was The New Testament Attitude Toward Slavery

And how does this stance affect our study of the issue of homosexuality?

Slavery in the Roman era was dramatically different from the despicable practice as we know it in American history. If you had been walking through any first-century Roman city, you would not have been able to distinguish between slaves and free. Patterns of work, relationships, or faith were no different between the two. Slaves served not only to do manual labor but also as doctors, nurses, household managers, and intellectuals. They administered funds and cities. They were typically given an excellent education at the expense of their owners so that philosophers and tutors were typically slaves.

Even more amazing to us, it was common for people to sell themselves into slavery to secure such privileges. A person who desired citizenship in the Empire could achieve it by enslaving himself to a citizen, then purchasing his freedom. Slavery was more a process than a condition.

While there is no doubt that many slaves were abused physically, sexually, and socially, it is also true that at least as many were part of the more privileged strata of society. And the total dependence of the Roman economy upon the labor of slaves made it impossible for the Empire to conceive of abolishing this institution. If an economist were to propose that we refuse all goods and services imported from outside America, wed be equally surprised.

Does the New Testament then argue for slavery? Absolutely not.

This story, in Genesis 19, tells of the attempted gang rape of two angels, sent by God to see if any good people remained in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah after their inhabitants had revoked the important law of the welcoming of strangers and of Gods subsequent destruction of the cities. But the point about this story is that its about punishment for inhospitality, a grave misdemeanour in Jewish society. Nothing about judgement over sexual orientation.

The Importance Of Different Contexts

In particular, Calvin recognised that the Bibles context and his context were radically different.

The Bible was talking about money-lending that was oppressive and harmed the poor, not businesses borrowing money to invest.

In other words, what the Bible was talking about was different enough from what was going on in Geneva, that in some circumstances it might be OK to lend money for profit.

So thats why you dont hear sermons against mortgages. It might be money-lending, but theres a big difference between usury money-lending thats oppressive, that feeds on the poor, thats wicked and taking out a mortgage so you can make a large purchase and spread out the payments over a long period of time.

So Really Does The Bible Condemn Homosexuality

The short answer, or those who like the cliff notes version, No. Ultimately the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. Wait, you want an explanation, dont you? In that case, here we go! The LGBTQ+ community has been demonized by greater American society for a long time. From the Hays Code enacted in 1934 to the response to the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s and 1990s, the LGBTQ+ community has always been on the marginalized side of things.

While we have come farther in terms of greater societal acceptance , the LGBTQ+ community is still routinely vilified in conservative circles, especially in the lucrative evangelical Christian voting block.

Its incredibly painful but many of us have heard pastors of all church sizes- from the rural one room church in the middle of nowhere to behemoths like Bethel- speak from the pulpit, that queer people are unfortunate sinners at best all the way to terrible to the core . Its especially degrading to hear some of them blame horrific tragedies that have happened in the world on having given the gays an inch, and God is angry.

Love, the thing that Jesus talked a lot about.
