What does the Bible say about Depression? – Words of Encouragement

The importance of community in the Bible is pretty clear!

The following verses provide a great Bible study about community. They are meant to not only encourage us but teach us how to treat one another.

Paul talks a lot about believers being the body of Christ. While that concept is too long to discuss in detail here, I wanted to mention it because the body of Christ is the same as a community of believers.

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

We all have a job, a purpose, a place of belonging.

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to everyone generously without a rebuke, and it will be given to him.

2. Romans 5:3-4 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.

Do Not Be Anxious About Anything

What Does the Bible Say about Encouragement? & 5 Tips to ...

âDo not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.â

Anxiety disorders affect almost 20 percent of the U.S. population every year. We have a lot to be anxious about. The Bible doesnât tell us not to be anxious because the things youâre anxious about donât matter. Rather, it offers a solution to the anxiety we experience in the moment: if youâre worried about something, bring it to God. Pray, and ask God to help you with your worry.Notice that God isnât just giving us âpeace.â Itâs the peace of God. When we bring our anxieties to God, we get to experience the same peace that God has, a peace that âtranscends all understandingâ and doesnât make sense in our circumstances. God protects your heart from the worries Satan wants you to be consumed by.

Preach the word be instant in season, out of season reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. 2 Timothy 4:2

If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Philippians 2:1-5

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15

Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. Romans 15:2

My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18

The Importance Of Encouragement In Life

Romans 1:11-12 says For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Paul is writing to strengthen the Christians in Rome. Hes reminding them of how to encourage others by their mutual faith. In other words, your faith comforts me, and I can encourage you by mine. Isnt that awesome?

Think about someone who has a super strong faith. One of my closest friends has gone through some pretty serious health issues during the last couple of years. But her story of faith and healing has not only lifted my family and I, but shes been a huge source of encouragement to our entire church. I like to think that she gained a huge dose of comfort from her church family too. I think that this is a great example of answering the question, what does the Bible say about encouraging others? Paul is reminding us about the importance of encouragement in life, not only for us, but others as well.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 reminds us Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. I love this verse! It tells me that even though there is pain in my trials, the experience enables me to be a better source of comfort to others.

He Is Able To Help Those Who Are Being Tempted

âBecause he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.â

Jesus was fully human and fully God. We often focus on the physicality of Jesusâ human nature. He slept . He wept . He ate . But itâs easy to forget that Jesus was also tempted to sin. While Jesus was the only perfect human, he was âfully human in every wayâ , and he was âtempted in every way, just as we areâ .Jesus never did sin, but because he was tempted, and he understands our weakness , he can help us when weâre struggling.

Don’t Miss: What The Bible Says About Loneliness

God Is Going To Take You Out Of The Fire

Sometimes doing Gods will is going to lead to being tossed in the fire. Ive been in the fire on many occasions, but God has always brought me out. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego would not serve the gods of Nebuchadnezzar. They would not deny their God no matter what. Why are we not confident in our God? Look how confident they were in their God.

In chapter 3 verse 17 they said, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire. God is able to deliver you! In rage Nebuchadnezzar had them thrown into the fire. There is no denying that Gods people will be thrown into the fire, but Daniel 3 teaches us that the Lord is with us in the fire. In verse 25 Nebuchadnezzar said, Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm.

If only 3 men were thrown into the fire who was the fourth man? The fourth man was the Son of God. You might be in the fire, but God is with you and you will eventually come out of the fire just like the three men did! Trust in the Lord. He will not forsake you.

12. Psalm 66:12 You let people ride over our heads we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.

Its Not Because You Sinned

When I go through hard times I can get really discouraged. We all get discouraged and we start to think, its because I sinned. Satan loves to increase these negative thoughts. When Job was going through severe trials his friends accused him of sinning against the Lord.

We must always remember Psalm 34:19, Many are the afflictions of the righteous. God was angry at Jobs friends because they were speaking things on behalf of the Lord that were not true. Hard times are inevitable. Instead of thinking, its because I sinned do what Job did in the storm. Job 1:20, he fell to the ground and worshiped.

1. Job 1:20-22 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. He said, Naked I came from my mothers womb, And naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

Tips To Encourage And Build Each Other Up

Here are 5 tips for building each other up in a way that can change us and how we navigate our relationships.

  • If you notice something positive about someone, say it. If they have a nice outfit or pair of glasses or more importantly display a special trait, let them know. We have the power to inspire people by expressing our positive thoughts. How many times do we hold back compliments? It may seem unnatural at first to vocalize kind remarks especially if it has not been modeled or we are shy. When we genuinely encourage others, it feels good as the giver and receiver of the compliment.
  • Be sensitive to others feelings and recognize when they need encouragement. We spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves, but when we flip the switch, develop a new pattern, and notice others more, we see things that we may have missed. Jesus stresses the importance of prayer when we are putting aside our own needs to encourage and build each other up. Jesus speaks to his disciples who slept as He faced His darkest hour and prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane:

Then He returned to the disciples and found them asleep. Couldnt you watch with me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak! Matthew 26:40-41 NLT
