How To Remember Scriptures From The Bible

Write It Into Your Heart

How to Memorize Bible Verses

Reading the Scripture is a great place to start, but there is more.

When I was in college, I had to memorize large amounts of material for many of my classes, especially history. And what I quickly learned is that the fastest and easiest way to memorize any information is to write it down.

When we write, we interact with information in a more personal, intimate way. When we write we interact with each word, impressing it upon our minds. In fact, Scripture tells us in Proverbs 3:3:

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck write them upon the table of thine heart:

To really remember Gods Word, we need to write it into our hearts.

  • The process helps us to focus upon the words and their meaning, giving us a deeper understanding of Gods Word.
  • Writing Scripture has us internalize and digest what we write. What we digest becomes a part of us.
  • Writing Scripture helps us to remember. The physical act of writing helps us to remember much more easily what we are to trying to memorize.

What Are The Most Important Bible Verses To Memorize

It is not easy, because all the verses in the Bible are important. But we did a survey in the Lords Guidance community and here is what subscribers were able to answer about the most important bible verses to memorize.

In reality, these are not the most important verses, but the best known Bible verses.

Adventures In Odyssey Club

  • Create gifts, artwork, or videos with Bible verses.
  • Find apps for scripture memory help or creating verse images.
  • Ask questions of each other. What does that verse mean? And is there any place where we can see that in the world?
  • Look up memorization tips and hacks to learn more extensive passages of Scripture.

As children move into their tween and teen years, help them understand the verses they have learned. What does it mean, and why is it helpful? For example, ask about forgiveness . Why does God forgive us? And why does God ask us to forgive others? In Matthew 6:14-15, why is an offense called a trespass? And what does popular psychologyhave to say about the importance of forgiveness? What can that tell us? And please know, no parent has all the answers. You can look up the answers together, ask a pastor, do an Internet search, or find great books to assist. Looking for a solution is a helpful life skill to teach your tween and teen.

Also, another way to engage a teenager is by creating with Scripture. As they are working on a verse, what can they create? I know one teen who makes necklaces for all her friends with a verse she chooses. Or teens can put together a video that the whole family watches and then post it on their favorite social media. What about creating artwork? Drawing, painting, or coloring a verse may resonate with your artistic tween or teen.

Mnemonic Examples For Verse Numbers

Once youve understood this technique, it will be simple to create little associations to precede the associations you use for the verses themselves.

Have a look at this:

For Proverbs 18:13, for example, I see a large TV set that I actually owned vacuuming J Edgar Hoover using a Hoover vacuum.

Weird and memorizable, right? It is!

But why these images?

Because 18 for me is always represented by a few things, one of which is a TV set.

Not just any TV set, but a particular TV set that has meaning for me.

And when you know the Major Method, youll know that theres a very good reason that its a TV and not some other object.

Likewise with J Edgar Hoover with a Hoover vacuum.

It represents 13 because Im following this simple chart:

Sometimes for 13, I see Hoover vacuuming on the Hoover Dam. Theres actually a way to make that dam a Virtual Memory Palace that Ill talk about in the future. For now, here are 5 Memory Palace Examples you can learn about to enhance your practice.

In any case, having multiple images to draw upon is the Magnetic Memory Method Principle of Compounding. Its part of the joyful science of creating and using a Magnetic 00-99 P.A.O. Learn more in the MMM course on memorizing math, equations and all things related to numbers.

I know that this process might sound complex.

It really isnt once you get into it. After all, as Jeannie Koh explains in her Magnetic Memory Method Testimonial, using these techniques helped her reach her goals immensely:

After all, Gods Word says:

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV

All Scripture is inspired, profitable, and equips us for good work. Right?

Right! Yet, with our children, we there are some key things we want them to know about who God is, why we need a Savior, Gods Great plan for salvation, and how Jesus wants us to live. Memorizing Bible verses that tell us about the gospel is a great place to start memorizing Scripture as a family.

Saturation The Whole Point

Merriam-Webster defines the word saturate: to fill completely with something that permeates or pervades.

When memorizing Scripture, we should find ways to so fill our lives with that Scripture that it starts to infuse every part of us. Instead of just putting aside time each day to work on getting the words right, we can allow the Word of God to permeate our thoughts and to pervade our actions.

After all, that is the whole point of memorizing the verses in the first place, isnt it? To make a change in your heart and in your choices?

Thats the purpose the Bible lays out.

Psalm 119:11 says, Your word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.

And 2 Timothy 3:16 says, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

When I was a kid and my Sunday School teacher would tell me to work on a verse, I would obey. I knew it was important. I would say the words a few times or maybe practice with someone else. I usually got to where I could say the words back, but I didnt care much about what the words meant to me.

Listen To Worship Songs Based Directly On Scripture

Listening to worship songs is a great way to get Gods word into your head. But while hundreds of excellent worship songs exist, here Im specifically talking about songs where the lyrics use the Bible verses verbatim.

Integrity Music produced a series called Scripture Memory Songs which were songs taken word for word from the Bible without any alteration. Each album usually had a theme like overcoming anxiety, spiritual warfare, peace etc.

As Michael Coleman and Ed Linquist, executive producers of Integrity Music write in their book Come and Worship:

Praise and worship music is a delivery system for Scripture. This music broadcasts Scripture, internally to your spirit, and externally to attack the enemy doubt, fear, or the devil himself. Thats why many praise and worship songs are taken directly from the Bible.

Alternatively, if youre a parent, you may prefer a series of albums produced by Breakaway Music called Hidden in My Heart: Scripture Lullabies. Based directly on scripture with a mellow and contemplative sound, these are designed to be suitable for babies and young children. However, they can also work for adults too and can bring soothing and peace to the soul.

Below is the same passage from Philippians 4:6-7 which was also adapted in the song above.

What it does is that it captures peoples attention using a combination of different types of musical hooks:

With Cant Get You Out of My Head, the rhythm as shown below is instantly recognisable.

Are You Up For The Challenge

Even if you could only spend 1 hour a day memorizing scripture, you could easily memorize 3-4 verses a day. Thats over 20 verses in one week about an entire chapter in many books of the Bible. Imagine being able to quote an entire chapter after just one week of studying.

Trust me, its possible!

When was the last time you memorized a verse in the Bible? Here are a couple chapters to consider for your challenge: Hebrews 1, Luke 6, and 1 Corinthians 13.

Recite The New Passage Word

How to Memorize Bible Verses – Remember What You Read From The Bible

Learn it well enough that you can write it out or type it out word-for-word without any mistakes. Then record yourself reciting it audibly ten times. Listen to your recordings as you go so that you correct yourself. Dont count a mistake as one of your ten times. When using my laptop while walking on a treadmill, I use my laptops media player to record myself and a calculator to keep track of how many times Ive correctly recited the passage. When using my phone while pacing inside or walking outside, I record myself on my phone, and I use a tally-counter app to track how many times Ive correctly recited the passage. You can take screenshots of the phrased text youre memorizing so that you can view it on your phone, or you can print it off. I prefer to use screenshots on my phone when Im first learning short passages, and I prefer paper when Im working on solidifying long passages.

Common Questions And Answers About Memorizing Scripture Quickly

Does The Length Matter?

Yes and no.

I recommend starting with short verses in the beginning. The sooner you develop the skills needed to quickly and accurately memorize short verses, the sooner youll be able to tackle longer verses.

The trick is in seeing that longer verses are usually just shorter verses fit together. In such cases, it can be very helpful to spend more time ensuring that you understand the gist of a long verse before committing it to memory.

Should you use flash cards and sticky notes?

No, I dont recommend this because it doesnt create the needed skills of memorization that a Memory Palace and association develops.

These forms dont create brain exercise either. The only exception to the rule is if you are memorizing individual words or terms and dont have the answer on the back of the card.

Instead, feature the Magnetic Imagery you created on the opposite side of the flash card or sticky note. In this way, youll ask your brain to do a bit of memory work and jog itself into action. The benefits of doing this will be incredibly rewarding.

And as soon as you can, leave the index cards and sticky notes behind.

  • Isaiah 59:2 Our sin separates us from God.
  • John 14:6 Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the only way to Father God.
  • Romans 5:23 Sin came into the world through Adam. Death comes to everyone because everyone sins.
  • Romans 6:23 Sin leads to death, but there is eternal life in Jesus. Its a gift from God.

Tip #1 For Memorizing Scripture: Focus On A Single Verse

Think in terms of quality over quantity. Be realistic in the time frame of how many verses you want to memorize. Start with one verse a week. It’s far better to fully memorize a single verse than to halfway know five.

The goal is not to memorize for the moment but rather know it well enough for it to penetrate your heart. When you hide Gods Word in your heart, He will use it to teach, illuminate, correct, and sanctify you.

After you have completely memorized the verse, then add the next one.

    Now comes the fun part.

What you want to do is mentally walk through your Memory Palaces one at a time.

Do this as many times as it takes to recall the verses accurately. Be sure to recall them both verbally and in written form. There are a few more tips on this practice below.

How many times exactly is a question no one can answer. At least 5 times the first day and then 1 time per day for a few weeks is a good rule of thumb derived from Dominic OBrien.

As you develop your skills, youll find that different verses enter your memory at different rates and each presents its own form of brain exercise.

The varying levels of challenge is a good thing. It keeps you on your toes, keeps things interesting, and in fact, you dont want it to be easy. If using memory techniques suddenly became easy, theyd be boring and you would stop using them.

Its very important to set a time aside for practicing recall to ensure that you do it.

I suggest using a Memory Journal to gather all your Memory Palaces and record your recall.

Theres no perfect journal, but one I recommend is called The Freedom Journal. It has just enough space for an effective Memory Palace drawing and lets you create 10-day sprints over the course of 100 days.
