Magna Carta: Tyranny Justice Liberty

Museum Of The Bible Opens In Washington D.C. | NBC Nightly News

The story of the Magna Carta is the story of the struggle for liberty. In this special exhibition, the role of the Bible and the English Church in that struggle will be traced from the creation of the Magna Carta in the thirteenth century to the present day. The Bible has much to say about rulers and ruling justly, such as Isaiah 10:1, Woe unto those who make unjust laws, or Psalm 2:1011, Now therefore, O kings, be wise be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Verses like these and others show the Bibles position on justice, and have been discussed and debated time and again over the centuries by both rulers and the ruled.

While the building was restored for the project, museum representatives were able to get historic landmark status for it from Washington’s Historic Preservation review board.

Museum Of The Bible Brainchild Of Hobby Lobby Owner Set To Open In Dc

Steve Green, the president of the craft chain Hobby Lobby, has already earned a spot in American history books by winning a precedent-setting Supreme Court case about birth control. Now, the evangelical Christian businessman is gearing up to make a mark on the countrys cultural history, as well.

Greens brainchild, the Museum of the Bible, is set to open this weekend. The $500 million museum is located steps away from the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It contains eight floors of biblical artifacts and exhibits from over the centuries including fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls, one of the largest private collections of Torahs in the world, and a Bible once owned by Elvis Presley.

The building houses multiple theaters and restaurant spaces, as well as a rooftop garden with plant varieties that are mentioned in the Bible. Other highlights include showings of the Christian-themed musical Amazing Grace, which previously struggled to stay afloat on Broadway.

The museum also features a Washington Revelations exhibit that takes viewers on a simulated flight over Washington, D.C., with the monuments and landmarks embellished with biblical texts and imagery.

Admission to the Museum of the Bible is free, although the museum suggests a donation of $15.

Its not about espousing our faith, Green told Reuters this week. We just want to present the facts and let visitors decide.

When the Museum of the Bible opened three years ago, its founders aimed to engage a wider audience with the Bible and its thousands of years of history.

But the museum’s ambitious goals have been overshadowed by a series of scandals, still unfolding, over antiquities acquired in a five-year international shopping spree that have turned out to be looted or fake.

What Is The History Of The Bible Museum

Greens massive collection of biblical artifacts, which the museum calls one of the worlds largest, became the starting point for the museum eight years back.

In 2010, the Museum of Bible was established as a 501 nonprofit, and museum officials announced in 2011 that they would be gathering with leaders in the business and religious sectors at the Vatican Embassy in Washington to discuss next steps.

Purchasing what would be the location for the museum back in July of 2012 for $50 million, museum representatives then spoke to the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, the local D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commission, and the D.C. Historic Preservation Review Board to make sure its design was suited to the area. Construction on the museum finally began back in February of 2015.

“What does the Museum of the Bible own that’s not on display? How many items have they accepted as donations that aren’t on display?” asked Joel Baden, a Yale Divinity School professor and co-author of “Bible Nation,” a book on Hobby Lobby. “Nobody knows. Nobody knows what they own. They’re being completely nontransparent about it.”

Green told NBC News that the museum has done everything in its power to ensure its artifacts are real, given past controversies surrounding Hobby Lobby.

“I think there are some times that you may not ever completely know, but we are using some of the most recent technology and advancements to help us analyze items,” he said, “to make sure what we have is exactly what it claims to be.”

The items in question by Egyptian authorities include a 5th century Bible fragment that was once displayed at the Vatican, according to the London newspaper The Times. Experts say it is made of papyrus and inscribed in Coptic, and is one of the earliest known copies of the letters of St. Paul to the Galatians found in the New Testament.

The Times reported that it was put up for sale on eBay without the proper ownership sourcing. Roberta Mazza, a papyrologist at the University of Manchester, has blogged about the item’s questionable provenance and said she saw the same fragment displayed as part of the Green Collection’s exhibition at the Vatican three years ago.

The worlds most famous book the one at the center of three religions and two millennia of conflict got its own museum Saturday in the heart of Washington.

The $500 million Museum of the Bible, largely funded by the evangelical billionaires who own the Hobby Lobby arts-and-crafts chain, opened its doors to the public, just blocks from the U.S. Capitol in a city where the separation of church and state remains hotly debated.

Its symbolism heralded by religious leaders wasnt lost on the visitors who walked through the eight-story, 430,000-square-foot space filled with high-tech exhibits and thousands of religious artifacts. The crowd was not nearly as large as the buildings capacity, but those who came expressed tremendous enthusiasm for what they found inside.

Im 73 years old, and Ive seen a lot of things, but this is the most amazing thing Ive ever seen, said Jean Johnson of Crow, W. Va., who was particularly startled by an exhibit on the languages that the Bible has never been translated into and left the museum thinking about how to support more foreign mission work. She wished that her church group didnt have to go tour the White House after three hours at the Bible museum she wanted to stay all day.

Woods, the director of operations at a real estate firm, flew to Washington on Thursday night and will leave Monday after spending as much time as possible in between at the museum.

Just What Is The Museum Of The Bible Trying To Do

Critics question purpose of new Bible museum in DC

The Hobby Lobby CEO behind it says it will be nonsectarianâbut it looks a lot like a Protestant evangelicalâs take on the Bible.

Candida Moss is the Edward Cadbury Professor of Theology at the University of Birmingham.

Joel Baden is professor of Hebrew Bible at Yale Divinity School.

In November, the Museum of the Bible, a 430,000-square-foot building, will open at 300 D Street in Washington, D.C. The museum will house thousands of pieces of biblical lore, including fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls, pieces of papyrus displaying early copies of the New Testament, and Elvis Presleyâs personal Bible, as well as a garden and Bible-themed restaurant at which biblical foods like date honey will be on the menu. According to its website, the museum will be an âeducational institution whose purpose is to invite all people to engage with the history, narrative and impact of the Bible.â Itâs a mission that sounds similar to what the Smithsonian Institution, just blocks away, aims to do for everything from American history to tropical biology.

This doesnât appear to have always been the plan. When the Museum of the Bible was first envisioned, it was clearly evangelical in purpose. According to its first nonprofit filings in 2010, the museumâs mission wasâto bring to life the living word of God, to tell its compelling story of preservation, and to inspire confidence in the absolute authority and reliability of the Bible.â
