LESSON: We should understand that God knows all things because He is the Creator of the universe. He knows the end from the beginning. He sees every heart and knows what we think. We think as humans, judge by appearance but He God, see the heart and knows its intent.

Therefore, we should make God the first in our lives and allow Him to ride on our lives. According to Matthew 6:33, we should always put Him first in everything we do and we will see how prosperous our lives will be. Remember, He sees and knows the motives of our hearts. Hes not a man who thinks or judge by appearance.

What would the ancient Israelites have assumed this blessing from God would include? This may be the single most important question we can ask about this poem. How spiritual and eternal and divine were the hopes of the people? How many would be content with merely physical, temporal, material blessings?

Perhaps no place sums up better than Leviticus 26 how multifaceted their Lords blessing would have been in their minds. Included would be the earthly and temporal, which God did not begrudge: rains, harvest, and produce , peace in the land and victory in battle , being fruitful and multiplying through offspring , and storehouses of resources . However, we should be careful not to sell Gods ancient people short on the fullness of what they longed for in his blessing. The culminating blessing that which was most important was Gods own presence, God himself:

I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.

So too for us today in the church age. Temporal supplies, earthly peace, and human offspring are not unholy, irrelevant, or insignificant. They can be precious gifts, expressions of Gods fatherly favor. But they are not the heart of the blessing. In fact, they can be taken away, not as the removal of Gods blessing but even as the very expression of it. The center and apex of Gods blessing, however, is the presence and person of God himself.

Different versions of the Bible have slightly different phrasings for Numbers 6:24-26.

Put My Name On The People

Finally, then, after the poem, God says to Moses in verse 27, So shall put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.

Through the pronouncing of this sacred blessing, God says, he puts his name on his people. He identifies them as his own. They belong to him. They know it, and so will the surrounding nations. They are his people and represent him in the world. They image him. They bear his name. Which is a weighty and wonderful task weighty because they carry Gods holy name on them in an unholy world.

This God will not give his glory to another, nor will he forsake his people, for his own names sake.

Much is at stake in bearing Gods name. They dare not do so in vain . And yet so also, in Gods own name being put upon them, they position themselves in the best of all places. This God will not give his glory to another, nor will he forsake his people, for his own names sake. In other words, Gods zeal for his name, for his glory, is the bedrock of this great blessing. He will be true to himself as is only righteous for God.

And if we missed it in the threefold repletion of his name the Lord, the Lord, the Lord at the head of each line in the blessing, he ends verse 27 with an emphatic I: I will bless them. The blessing is secondary. The bottom line is the Blesser. The Keeper. The Lord.

The Lord Bless You And Keep You

“The Lord bless you and keep you” is a classical sacred choral composition by John Rutter, based on Numbers 6:24-26. It is a setting of a biblical benediction, followed by an extended “Amen”. Rutter scored the piece for four vocal parts and organ. He composed it in 1981 for the memorial service of Edward T. Chapman, the director of music at Highgate School, London, with whom he had studied when he attended the school.

It was published by Oxford University Press in 1981, in the anthology Oxford Easy Anthems, edited by David Willcocks.

The Passages Subject: The Lord

Each successive line in the priestly blessing starts with the words the LORD . The passage specifically focuses on God, as His Name is the subject of the blessing. The Lord, not the priest, was the one who blessed His people.

The priest merely declared the blessing to the hearers. It is the Lord who blesses, keeps, makes His face to shine upon His people, acts graciously, turns His face toward His people, and gives them peace . He is the central focus and subject of the blessing.

Central to the blessing is Gods covenant name: Yahweh. Numbers 6:24 employs the divine name, represented in the Hebrew tetragrammaton, YHWH commonly translated as LORD in English Bible translations.

God first revealed His personal, covenant name to Moses when He appeared to Him in the burning bush in the wilderness . When Moses asked who he should say sent him to free the Israelites, God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you .

Using His covenant name, Yahweh, God was emphasizing His close relationship with Israel. The Lord alone established the nation of Israel and He would continue to preserve His people.

As the Lord indicated, when referring to the pronouncement of the blessing, So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them . His covenant, personal name is central to this priestly blessing.

Blessed By Knowing God

Numbers 6:24-26 is a powerful promise declared in a priestly blessing. The Lord himself, who brought the Israelites out of Egypt, was uniquely present with the nation Israel .

Not only was He present with them in a special relationship, but He also promised to protect and guard Israel. In this way, Israel was greatly blessed by having the Lord as their God.

Similarly, Christians today are blessed by knowing the Lord in a close and intimate way. Although the church is distinct from Israel, Christians do have a special relationship with the Lord and can find comfort in the words of the priestly blessing.

Believers are more specifically blessed and kept by knowing Jesus, who is always present with His followers and preserves them spiritually .

As is stated in Romans 8:37-39, No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord .

God is still the focus of the blessing that believers receive, which is being in a saving relationship with the Lord.

What Is The Biblical Context Of ‘may The Lord Bless You And Keep You’

Its important to remember that when the Aaronic blessing was first pronounced in Numbers 6, the Israelites only had access to the Lord through Moses. So one of the purposes of the blessing was to affirm Gods faithful love and care to His chosen people, Israel.

The blessing couldnt have come at a better time. The Israelites sinned against God shortly after that. Their transgressions would cost them forty years of wandering . But they had the assurance, through the blessing, that their sin would not cost them Gods love and care. Why was God faithful to His blessing even when His people were unfaithful? Because the Aaronic blessing carried the weight of Yahwehs name. “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them” .

The holding power of Gods blessing to Israel was unfailing from generation to generation. For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own .

As Gods Children, we are encouraged as we experience Gods Sovereignty over our lives. Beyond what our eyes can see God has blessings in store for each one of us.

The stresses of life experienced during these unprecedented times can have one feeling so challenged, overwhelmed and so broken. However, in all of this we recognize that God is not blinded to our situations. God is all powerful and is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we may ask or think. The doors God chooses to open in our lives can leave us standing in awe. He also can close the doors that he feels would harm us and is not good for us.

Be encouraged that the Greatest blessings today may come from times of extreme testing. It is then we experience that God will turn things around. He makes every crooked path straight. He is a Way Maker, Miracle Worker, light in the darkness. He turns our mourning into dancing. He turns our trials into triumphs.

We are children of the most High God. We are His People and the Sheep of His Pastures. The Power of Prayer will transform our families, loved ones, our communities, our state, our nation, our world. God watches over His word to perform it. God watches over His children.

Why Was Aaron Commanded To Bless The People

Its important to remember that the priests, led by Aaron and the rest of the Levites, were set apart to lead the people in worship and spiritual teaching. The priests were Gods chosen intercessors and a direct mouthpiece to the people. Charged with relaying Gods commands, the priests were also the ones who appeared before God to make sacrifices on behalf of the people.

For this reason, the priests were trusted by the people and looked to for guidance and instruction.
