Clay Clark is hosting the ReAwaken America Tour Salem conference. It features a host of speakers about freedom, faith, family, health and conservative family values. Each of the talks are generally 15-20 minutes. The speakers will include a wide range of conservative voices. State Fair And Cherry Festival

Agriculture has always been important to Salem, and the city has historically recognized and celebrated it in a number of ways. In 1861, Salem was chosen as the permanent site of the Oregon State Fair by the Oregon State Agricultural Association. Salem is nicknamed the “Cherry City”, because of the past importance of the local cherry-growing industry. The first cherry festival in Salem was held in 1903 and was an annual event, with parades and the election of a cherry queen, until sometime after World War I. The event was briefly revived as the Salem Cherryland Festival for several years in the late 1940s.

Reawaken America Tour Stop Moved From Redmond Fairgrounds To Salem Church

A stop on the ‘Reawaken America Tour’ that was scheduled for the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond in early April, with speakers including General Michael Flynn and Roger Stone, has been moved to The River Church in Salem.

A ticket-seller for The ThriveTime Show told NewsChannel 21 it was “because they were going to require masks and stuff like that” at Redmond, but event organizer and conservative podcast host Clay Clark said “I’ve never talked to anyone who required masks.”

“I do all the events at churches,” he said, and the fairgrounds had been chosen because “I couldn’t find a church yet I don’t want to have it anywhere but a church. I don’t like government. I’m a libertarian. My events are more parallel to a Billy Graham revival.”

Clark said they need a church with at least 3,000 seats for their gatherings. He also said they state up front having a no-refund, no-transfer policy for event tickets “because I’m in charge. I’m a capitalist.” Only if someone didn’t understand that policy can they get a refund, he said.

This petition is to take a stance against the Reawaken America Tour that is scheduled for April 1 and 2 at The River Church in Salem, Oregon. We want to urge our city and state leadership to take a swift and direct stance declaring that Salem does not welcome an event that, not only goes against the recommendation of the CDC, but also has a high probability of spreading a highly infectious disease during a pandemic which has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans.

The Reawaken website lists 54 speakers for the Salem event. Many of whom, are high-profile conservatives known for spreading fallacious and dangerous information related to the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines, and the democratic election of President Joe Biden.

Controversial Reawaken America Rally Moved To Salem After Central Oregon Mask Uproar

A controversial rally has been moved to a church in Salem after an uproar involving mask enforcement and elected officials in central Oregon.

The Reawaken America Tour was originally scheduled for the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond. It has been moved to The River Church at Portland Road in Salem. It is scheduled for April 1 and 2.

The event at other locations has focused on support for former President Donald Trump, as well as false allegations surrounding the presidential election and COVID-19.

The event came under scrutiny after the Bend Bulletin reported an event planner stated in an email that they had gotten personal assurance from Republican Deschutes County commissioners that the states mask mandate wouldnt be enforced.

County officials deny that occurred, according to the Bulletin, and the county later asked event organizers to sign a contract addendum agreeing to follow the mandate.

The events organizer, podcaster Clay Clark, was quoted in the Bend Bulletin as saying The River Church reached out to him and offered to host the rally in Salem.

River Church Pastor Lew Wooten has spoken at rallies in Salem in the past year, including a 2nd Amendment rally in May and an anti-vaccine mandate rally this winter.

A Salem spokesperson said because the event is private, The city does not have a regulatory role here.

Museums And Other Points Of Interest

In addition to the Oregon State Capitol and adjacent Willson Park, Salem’s downtown contains the Willamette Heritage Center, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, the Elsinore Theatre, Riverfront Park, the Willamette River, some of the oldest buildings in Oregon, as well as shopping and restaurants. The A.C. Gilbert’s Discovery Village interactive children’s museum and Prewitt-Allen Archaeological Museum are both also located in Salem.

The two leading candidates for the tallest building in Salem are Salem First United Methodist Church and the Capitol Center. A private survey commissioned by a local publication holds that the church is the tallest. The tall white spire of the 1878 church rises at the intersection of Church and State Streets across from the Capitol grounds. The Capitol Center was built in 1927 by former Salem mayor Thomas A. Livesley, a prominent Salem-area businessman and civic leader. At that time of its completion, it was the tallest commercial building in the state.

In 1988, Livesley’s family home was purchased through private donations and was donated to the state. It now serves as the official residence of the Governor and family. Now known as Mahonia Hall, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Salem Concert Band is a community band made up of professional and amateur musicians that performs several classical and pops concerts annually.

As churches, synagogues and houses of worship around Salem have switched to live streaming services, drive-by communion and prayer groups via Zoom, one Salem congregation has bucked the trend.

The River, a nondenominational church on Northeast Portland Road, held four smaller in-person services last Sunday, prompting concern from some parishioners.

Lin Johnson, 77, began attending The River in late 2019 with his stepdaughter and said he appreciated the energy and passion at services.

Theyre kind of a very exuberant church, a Holy Roller church, he said. That means handshakes, hugs and physical closeness during services was common, he said.

But what was a source of comfort and support during normal times caused concern as the coronavirus spread and services continued as normal.

I felt like they werent doing enough quickly enough to pull back on it, Johnson said. He stopped attending in early March, concerned for his health. His stepdaughter shared those concerns, he said.

Theres already a lot of tension in peoples lives. I dont want to add any more doing an interview right now, he said.

Cultural Events And Series

From May through October the Salem Saturday Market, located north of the Capitol, exhibits an emphasis on local products including crafts, baked goods, produce, meat, and other items. In addition to the Saturday Market, there is a Wednesday Farmers’ Market hosted downtown in Courthouse Square during the summer, as well a Holiday Gift Market in December. The 60+ year old, indoor Saturday Public Market is open all year.

The annual World Beat Festival, held in June, is sponsored by the nonprofit Salem Multicultural Institute. The event lasts for two days and is held at the Riverfront Park. It features international crafts, music, dance, food, and folklore from every continent, and in recent years has held a Dragon Boat race similar to the ones held during the nearby Rose Festival in Portland.

The Salem Art Association sponsors the annual Salem Art Fair and Festival, which takes place at Bush’s Pasture Park during the summer. Its displays, interactive exhibits, food, and performances attract thousands of visitors each year.

The largest event in Salem is the Oregon State Fair at the end of August through Labor Day. Located in the Oregon State Fairgrounds in North Salem, the fair offers exhibits, competitions and carnival rides. Other events such as concerts, horse shows and rodeos take place at the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center throughout the year.

The Mid-Valley Video Festival offers local, national and international independent films in theaters throughout the city.
