How Many Miracles Did Jesus Perform In The Bible

The First Miracle Of Jesus

How Many Miracles Did Jesus Perform in the Bible?

When Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana, he performed his first “miraculous sign,” as the Gospel writer John, called it. This miracle, showing Jesus’ supernatural control over physical elements like water, revealed his glory as the Son of God and marked the beginning of his public ministry.

Some of Jesus’ most astonishing miracles included raising people from the dead, restoring sight to the blind, casting out demons, healing the sick, and walking on water. All of Christ’s miracles provided dramatic and clear evidence that he is the Son of God, validating his claim to the world.

These supernatural acts of love and power drew people to Jesus, revealed his divine nature, opened hearts to the message of salvation, and caused many to glorify God. They also demonstrated Christ’s absolute authority over nature and his limitless compassion. Altogether, they proved that he was, indeed, the promised Messiah.

Jesus As One Among Many

Members of the Jesus Seminar have sought to emphasize Jesuss naturalism by placing his pronouncements and deeds in historical contextby showing that rabbis and other Jewish figures were purported to have performed miracles as well. If other religious leaders of the time were perceived as having supernatural powerspowers no one now believes in or takes seriouslythen it stands to reason Jesuss powers should be treated similarly: as myth. So, how did Jesus perform miracles, and why does it matter?

However, the parallels between Jesus and other wonder workers of the time dont go very far. Boyd notes three ways in which Jesus is unique:

  • No other religious leader was so closely associated with the supernatural.
  • No other religious leader performed miracles of Jesuss caliber .
  • No other religious leader performed miracles on his own authority .
  • The Case of Apollonius

Skeptics have often noted the parallels between Apollonius of Tyana, a historical figure active in the first century AD, and Jesus: both healed the sick, performed exorcisms, and raised the dead and both were allegedly seen by their followers after they died. However, Apolloniuss feats are dismissed as legend whereas Jesuss are accepted as fact. Why, a skeptic might ask, do we not worship Apollonius? Or, vice versa, dismiss Jesus?

There are numerous problems with this line of argument:

    Jesus Curses The Fig Tree

    Miracles of Jesus Christ

    Matthew 21:18-22 NKJV:

Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, Let no fruit grow on you ever again. Immediately the fig tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, How did the fig tree wither away so soon? So Jesus answered and said to them, Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, Be removed and be cast into the sea, it will be done. And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.

Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, Let no one eat fruit from you ever again. And His disciples heard it.

Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.

Unity Of The Son Of God

Because the incarnate Son of God is one person with two natures, we should expect to see Gospel episodes reflective of each nature. Even in this profound revelation of Jesuss divine power on the sea, he uses human feet to walk on water, a human arm to save Peter from sinking, and a human voice to reassure his disciples of his divine identity. Jesus is always one person acting according to both of his natures.

Many modern theologians seek to understand the mystery of the incarnation by dividing Christ, by isolating one of his natures and asking how a particular action is possible. Not only do Christological problems result it leads to grave Trinitarian ones as well. For to suggest Jesuss miracles arent touched by his divine nature is to divide the works of the Trinity, to parcel out discrete acts among the Father, Son, and Spirit. Classical Trinitarian theology, however, joins Gods essential unity with the co-inherence of the persons and holds that every work of the Trinity is undivided. When God acts, each person acts. Its not wrong to say that the Spirit is acting in Jesuss miracles he is. It is wrong to say that the second person of the Trinity isnt.

Its not wrong to say that the Spirit is acting in Jesuss miracles he is. It is wrong to say that the second person of the Trinity isnt.

They answered Him, No. And He said to them, Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord! Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment , and plunged into the sea. But the other disciples came in the little boat , dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish which you have just caught. Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three and although there were so many, the net was not broken.

Jesus Restores Sight To Bartimaeus In Jericho

7 Types of Miracles of Jesus Performed in the Bible ...

    Matthew 20:29-34 NKJV:

Now as they went out of Jericho, a great multitude followed Him. And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David! Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet but they cried out all the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David! So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, What do you want Me to do for you? They said to Him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him.

Now they came to Jericho. As He went out of Jericho with His disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Then many warned him to be quiet but he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you. And throwing aside his garment, he rose and came to Jesus. So Jesus answered and said to him, What do you want Me to do for you? The blind man said to Him, Rabboni, that I may receive my sight. Then Jesus said to him, Go your way your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

    How Did Jesus Perform Miracles

The fact that Jesus performed miracles isnt necessarily a token of his deityhis disciples later performed similar feats without claiming deity for themselves. Rather, its how he thought about his miracles that sets them apart. But how did Jesus perform miracles?

For example, when Jesus would perform a miracle, he would situate it in a very specific context: as a sign of the coming of the Kingdom of God. Rather than view himself as simply a worker of miracles, Jesus saw himself as an emissary of God, through which Gods promises would come to pass. In short, he saw himself as transcendent.

Jesus Heals An Officials Son At Capernaum

    John 4:46-54 NKJV:

So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Then Jesus said to him, Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe. The nobleman said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies! Jesus said to him, Go your way your son lives. So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Your son lives! Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed, and his whole household. This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

Did The Apostle Paul Perform Miracles

  • Could the disciples perform miracles?
  • ^ While miracles are recorded in Pauls first and third journeys, no mention is made of them in his second journey. This does not necessarily mean he performed no miracles then it only suggests that Luke chose not to list any miracles at that point in his narrative.

The Healing Of A Paralysed Man

A Year of FHE: Year 01/Lesson 50: Jesus Performed Many ...

As the news of Jesus’ remarkable healings spread, more and more people came to hear him and brought their sick and dying loved ones to him. Although Jesus regularly withdrew to be alone and pray, he spent much of the time besieged by desperate people, hanging on his every word. According to the gospels, it was on such a day that one of his most moving healing miracles took place.

Jesus was in the small town of Capernaum, where he and the disciples had made their home. He was teaching inside a house, and the house was packed with people. Mark’s Gospel suggests that this was Peter’s house. Some of the crowd were locals, but Luke says there were also Pharisees and teachers of the Law there. These officials had travelled from every village in Galilee, and from Judea and Jerusalem, to hear him. They sat and listened, but they had an agenda. This preacher was a maverick, a threat to their authority. There were plenty of rumours about him, but now they had come to see for themselves.

As Luke sets the scene, he adds that ‘the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick’. Perhaps that power was palpable to some of the onlookers.

Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
