What Does The Bible Say About Death And Mourning

Spiritual Death Is Separation From God

What Does The Bible Say About Grief? My Story of Loss…

Its easy to read modern definitions for words and situations into biblical text. This often occurs when someone thinks of death. To our way of thinking, death means the end of something and the complete cessation of life. In Scripture, however, death primarily means separationseparation of mans spirit from his body and of man from God.

For example, Scripture reveals our physical bodies will eventually cease to function and will begin to decay. Our souls, however, are eternal. Therefore, once brain death occurs, our bodies and souls separate. Similarly, spiritual death, caused by sin, separates man from His Creator. When we receive eternal life, our relationship with God is restored. Those who dont trust in God for salvation, however, remain in deatheternally separated from Him and therefore all the love and goodness and righteousness that stems from Him. This is hell.

God never wants us, His beloved creations, to live in fear, uncertainty, or confusion. In Christ, He offers us a certain, glorious and joy-filled destination a future free of pain, sorrow and sickness. This invitation is open to all who trust not in themselves or their good works but instead in Jesus and the price He paid.

What Happens To Your Soul When You Die We Dont Have To Fear Death

God wants to prepare you so you do not have to fear death even a little bit. By believing in Him we know that God has conquered death. 1 Corinthians 15 says that Jesus died so that the effects of death will not apply to us. Then he says in verse 54:

Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? 1 Corinthians 15|54-55

For someone who has surrendered their life to God by believing in His son, death is not something to be feared because it has already been conquered.

But it still hurts when we lose someone.

Though we can be fully confident of our own belief in Christ, we cant really know fully if someone else believed. AND, even if they did, we still miss them and mourn them. Jesus was visiting Lazarus after he had died and in the shortest verse in the Bible, it says that Jesus wept, John 11|35.

Now here is whats crazy: Jesus was about to bring Lazarus back from the dead. But he saw the weeping of Lazaruss family and felt the pain of loss. So in that moment, before he performed his greatest miracle, he wept.Of course it hurts when we lose someone. The hope we have for ourselves, if we believe, does not take away the pain we will still experience here on earth.

Peace I Leave With You My Peace I Give Unto You: Not As The World Giveth Give I Unto You Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled Neither Let It Be Afraid John 1: 27 Kjv

St. John chapter 14 begins with an instruction for those who believe in the Lord. “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.”

In verse 27 this instruction is tied to a promise. “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you”.

The peace that we have in Christ is like no other. This peace brings comfort and hope amid our darkest trials. When death and all the pain that accompanies it brings worry, fear, and grief we should embrace the peace that the Lord has promised.

Psalm : 9 The Lord Is A Stronghold For The Oppressed

The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.

Psalm 9:9

The Lord is a stronghold. A stronghold is a a place that has been fortified so as to protect it against attack. Despite deep sadness, those who grief have protection.

One of the things Ive learned is that time does not heal all wounds. Grief does not go away. It changes over time, but rather than going away, it becomes part of who we are. As you consider how grief will shape and mold you, know that God is there to bring you peace and protection.

Then Shall The King Say Unto Them On His Right Hand Come Ye Blessed Of My Father Inherit The Kingdom Prepared For You From The Foundation Of The World: Matthew 2: 34 Kjv

What Does The Bible Say About Grief?

In this story told by Jesus in Matthew only those who are compassionate and kind to the poor and needy will receive a heavenly reward. We have to treat each person with the same amount of dignity and compassion we would treat Jesus.

Thanks to Jesus’ atoning sacrifice we are heirs of God’s kingdom. We will receive heaven as an inheritance because we accept Jesus as our Savior and the Lord as our Heavenly Father and we extend His love to others.

Final thoughts on death

We may find comfort in the thought that death is only a sleep. Those who die in Christ will be resurrected to dwell with Him. There we will spend eternity in heaven where there will be no more crying, sickness, pain or death.

Not Everyone Goes To The Same Place

According to Scripture, each of us will go to one of two places once we die. Those whove trusted in Christ for salvation will immediately be ushered into His presence, where they will remain for all of eternity. Those who have rejected Him and His offer of grace, however, will spend eternity in hell.

Hell isnt a place we like to talk or read about, but Jesus, the One offering eternal life, addressed this topic on more than one occasion. He told us its a place of darkness and of fire, populated by the wicked and rebellious. With each parable and statement, its as if Hes offering us a warning: Theres death and in this context, that means separation from God, and life. Choose life.

What if our inner angst regarding hell points to the heart of God? Scripture is clear: God is a loving Father who doesnt want anyone to perish. As I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked . To the contrary God is loving toward all of His creation and heaven rejoices when a single sinner recognizes her need for Jesus and turns to Him.

Rethinking The Good Life

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Jesus declares this in his famous Sermon on the Mount. The passage may sound bizarre at first. Why are the ones who mourn blessed? But in this teaching, Jesus is reversing the concept of the good life. Rather than pursuing money, honor, acclaim, success, and the comforts of life, the good life is found in the kingdom of God.

It is not in the wealth, power, or ease of this world that you will find meaning, but in humility, faith, and pain. Mourning keeps us dependent on God and draws us close to where he can comfort us. This is a difficult, but important truth, to remember as Christians. However, while it is difficult to realize we will experience suffering, it is also a profound promise that God will be there to comfort us.

Whats After Death Why Do We Need To Sleep

The death that humanity experiences at the end of their earthly lives is not the end of humanitys story. The dead may not be in heaven looking down at us, but they will rise again when Jesus returns to earth at His Second Coming.

Until then, everyone sleeps.

Death has been addressed many times throughout the Bible, and always with a sense of assurance. Solomon had no doubts about what happened after death when he wrote the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing .

The writers who chronicled the books of 1 and 2 Kings never doubted that the rulers of Israel rested with their ancestors after they died. The teachings of Scripture were clear to them.

But the Bible talks about another sort of assurance as well. An assurance of something after death.

Job knew about it . So did the prophet Daniel . Its the same assurance Jesus gave to Martha before they went to Lazarus tomb. He told her that her brother would rise again.

Yes, said Martha. I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

And Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

That is the assurance that Christ gives us, the promise of life beyond the power of death. A life we can only reach through him. As he said to the Jews during his ministry:

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

So Why Does The Bible Talk About Ghosts

23 Bible Verses About Death What Does the Bible Say About Death and ...

Despite the Bibles clear teachings that the dead know nothing once they die and have no contact with the living, there are a few passages in the Bible that, at first glance, seem to be saying something else.

One perplexing story, for example, takes place in the book of 1 Samuel. It involves King Saul, the first king of Israel, and a medium sometimes referred to as the witch of Endor.

The story goes like this. When Saul first began his kingship, he followed Gods commands and took the counsel of the wise prophet Samuel, the man who had first anointed him to become king. But, over time, Saul started disobeying Gods commands and making bad decisions, ignoring the counsel of Samuel. Eventually, Samuel died.

A couple years later, King Saul was engaged in a fierce war and he wanted Gods guidance to know what to do. But, after ignoring Gods word for so long, Saul was struggling to reconnect with Him. Saul was desperate for guidance, so he turned to the one person who had counseled him in the past: Samuel.

In the dark of night, King Saul and two of his men snuck out of the camp and went to the town of Endor to see a medium, a woman who claimed to be able to communicate with the dead.

Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up for you?

And he said, Bring up Samuel for me.

When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!

So he said to her, What is his form?

God Is Close To Those Who Grieve

If youve suffered through grief at the loss of a loved one before, you may have noticed a feeling of loneliness accompanying your sorrow. Maybe you still feel that loneliness all this time later. But the truth is that we arent alone. In fact, not only does Gods word promise that He is always with us, but it specifically says that God is close.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit.

Psalm 34:18

King David, the writer of this psalm, was well-acquainted with grief. First, his best friend Jonathan died. Then his first child died. But during those times, he appeared to discover a comforting truth that God gets close in those heart-breaking seasons. And His immediate presence is exactly what we need in those moments.

Because Jesus Overcame Death So Will We

God originally created the world free of sin and death. When mankind rebelled against Him , we broke our relationship with God the Father and the curse of death and sin began to rule. When Jesus died on the cross for our sins, He broke the power of both, and since we have been united with Him in His death through faith, we will also be raised to life as He was .

Jesus demonstrated this unchanging truth when He stepped out of the tomb, alive. This means, though our physical bodies will cease to function, our souls will immediately enter into Gods presence. Later, when Christ returns, our souls will be reunited with our physical, then glorified bodies, which will be raised from the dead.1
