He Is Faithful And Just To Forgive Us

Pastor’s Perspective – Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses and More

Can God forgive a woman who has had an abortion? This is a very common question because many women in our society have had abortions. The Bible is true when it says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness . I would encourage a woman still having continuing guilt about past wrong decisions, the mistaken decision to have an abortion, to believe that verse. Have you confessed that sin to God and acknowledged that it was wrong? His word says he is faithful to forgive you your sins, so its a matter of trusting him now that he has forgiven your sin. There is no doubt that there is sadness and regret, but the Bible says, as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us . He forgives our sins and we go on.

Wayne Grudem offers a biblical and ethical guide to controversial issues surrounding abortion and euthanasia, defining his terms clearly and exploring science, politics, and opposing arguments.

When Does Human Life Begin

God views human life as beginning at conception. In his Word, the Bible, God consistently portrays an unborn child as a distinct person. Consider some examples indicating that God does not draw a distinction between the life of a baby in the womb and one that has been born.

  • Under divine inspiration, King David said to God: Your eyes even saw me as an embryo. God considered David to be a person even before he was born.

  • Additionally, God knew that he would have a special purpose for the prophet Jeremiah before Jeremiahs birth. God said to him: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I sanctified you. I made you a prophet to the nations.Jeremiah 1:5.

  • The Bible writer Luke, a physician, used the same Greek word to describe an unborn baby as he did to describe a newborn baby.Luke 1:41 2:12, 16.

Abortionists Can Not Worship God

You may have had an abortion and God is always merciful to forgive you and there is no sin that God can not forgive but if people believe it is okay to have abortions and they support it, they can not also be worshiping God simultaneously. Why? Because that is a contradiction to His Word and the Scriptures previously mentioned. God is the Giver of Life and only He has the right and authority to take it. The fact is that we all have an appointment to die but God Himself has appointed this day and we have no right to supersede His divine right in the sanctity of life . Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full .

Life begins at conception, not at birth. Just see what God says through Jeremiah the Prophet, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart . Amos displays Gods righteous indignation against those who kill babies or fetuses in the womb writing, This is what the LORD says: The people of Ammon have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! When they attacked Gilead to extend their borders, they ripped open pregnant women with their swords. God will not hold them guiltless nor will He let them go unpunished who kill the unborn. How much more clear can these Scriptures be? This is not my opinion but God Almightys. If this makes you mad, then you are getting mad at the wrong person, but it still needs to be said!

God Calls Us To Protect The Defenseless Including Children

One of the key themes throughout the Bible and historical Christianity is that we should be concerned about the welfare of the poor, weak, and helpless. Many Scriptures make this very clear. For example:

Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Rescue those being led away to death hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, But we knew nothing about this, does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?

In addition to the previous verses, read James 1:27 to see how the Bible describes religion that is pure and faultless. Although James was not writing about Gods attitude about abortion, the principle is clear: We should be concerned about those who are unable to care for themselves. An unborn child is totally helpless and unable to care for himself or herself.

What Does The Bible State

Abortion

Molly should have challenged Bobs presupposition that the Bible actually states what he claimed it does. I decided to look this passage up, and I found some interesting details. Bob had quoted from the New Revised Standard Version, which states:

When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no further harm follows, the one responsible shall be fined what the womans husband demands, paying as much as the judges determine. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

According to the NRSV, this passage seems to teach that if the pregnant woman had a miscarriage but was not hurt herself, then the person who caused the miscarriage faced a mere fine determined by the womans husband and the judges. But if the woman were harmed, then the punishment would be life for life, eye for eye, and so on. In other words, the New Revised Standard Version makes the life of the mother appear more important than the life of the unborn child.

Even if this were an accurate translation of the passage, this Mosaic law does not really address the modern practice of abortion. This law regards an accident, but Bob sought to apply it to deliberately destroying the life of the unborn through abortion. Nevertheless, the passage is relevant to the abortion debate as it does address the issue of the value of life of the unborn.

What The Scriptures Say About Abortion

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that life is worth preserving and that none has the right to take it. Today, over 98% of the abortions performed involve women who simply do not want to have the baby. Less than 2% of abortions are for the reasons of rape, incest, or the mothers life is at risk. Even in this more difficult 2 % of instances, abortion should never be looked at as the first option. Always have in mind that the life of a human being in the womb is worth every effort to allow the child to be born.

Kind David understood the importance of life in the woman and spoke under the influence of Gods Spirit saying: For you created my inmost being you knit me together in my mothers womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be .

The Argument Doesnt Hold

The statement that abortion is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible is technically correct. However, this allegation falls prey to the logical fallacy of assuming that because an act is not mentioned in Scripture, the Bible therefore approves of that act. After all, Scripture does not specifically condemn many other evils, such as pyramid schemes, terrorism, carjacking and kidnapping. Does this mean that Christians should not oppose these evil acts either?

The Bible and abortion argument is a mere diversion, like all of the other pro-abortion slogans. Some people mock Christians who look to the Bible for moral direction, claiming that people should not need the Bible in order to know that certain acts, such as murder and stealing, are wrong. Of course they are half-right these sins are against the law of nature and natures God, so they are unjustified by any means. But we can also extend such reasoning to include abortion. Christians do not need the Bible to tell us that abortion is wrong, because science concludes without a shadow of a doubt that the preborn child is a human being and reasonable people can agree that it is wrong to kill innocent human beings.

Yes, it is true that the Bible does not mention abortion. So what?

Abortion has always been more of a scientific question than a religious one.

Is Abortion Wrong If The Life Of The Mother Or The Child Is In Danger

Pastor’s Perspective – Drugs, Abortion and More

In view of what the Bible says about the life of an unborn child, a person would not be justified in having an abortion because of a potential health risk to mother or child.

What about the rare situation where at the time of childbirth an emergency forces the choice between saving the life of the mother or saving the baby? In such a case, those involved would have to make a personal decision about which life to try to save.

^ par. 3 Some translations make it appear that in this law to Israel, the crucial matter was what happened to the mother, not to the fetus. The Hebrew text, however, refers to a fatal accident to either mother or child.

^ par. 8 Jehovah is Gods name as revealed in the Bible.Psalm 83:18.

A Spiritual View Of What The Bible Says About Abortion

God said to the prophet Jeremiah, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart I appointed you as a prophet to the nations . God knew this man before he was born. As he was forming in his mothers womb God gave him his personality, talents, and temperament. If his mother had gotten an abortion, the fetal tissue she aborted would have been a real person named Jeremiah a mighty prophet of God and the gift of Gods voice to the nations, though she would never have known.

The Lord hath called me from the womb: from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. Isaiah 49:1

Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us within our mothers? Job 31:15

For you created my inmost being you knit me together in my mothers womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139:13-14

When Does Life Begin

One may argue here that they agree that it is wrong to murder, but they still dont see how a fetus necessarily qualifies as a human being. Perhaps God doesnt feel the same way about a very young fetus, as He does an older fetus, a newborn, or a 50-year-old. It may be a different issue altogether with Him. Does the Bible say anything specifically about unborn children?

In Exodus 21:22 God gives a specific law regarding social order for the Israelites. He stated that if two men were fighting and hit a pregnant woman, thus causing her to give birth prematurely, they must be fined according to any damage done to the baby. The fine must be paid in relation to the amount of damage inflicted upon the child. If God would make a law specifically referring to the rights of the unborn, then surely the unborn must mean something to Him!

It has been stated, If the womb had windows, there would be no abortion. As humans, we are not omnipresent and cannot know the full scope of what each human life is worth. We cannot dwell in the womb with a fetus, nor can we see it as it matures. But God can.

Incest And Rape In The Bible

One of the most infamous of all cases of rape and incest is that of Amnon, the son of David, who laid a trap for his sister in the hopes of lying with her. In 2 Samuel 13 we read that Amnon became so obsessed with his sister Tamar that he made himself ill. She was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her . Amnon was in love with Tamar, brother Absaloms sister . Amnon pretended to be ill and told Tamar, Bring the food here into my bedroom so I may eat from your hand. And Tamar took the bread she had prepared and brought it to her brother Amnon in his bedroom. But when she took it to him to eat, he grabbed her and said, Come to bed with me, my sister . Tamar responded by saying, No, my brother! she said to him. Dont force me! Such a thing should not be done in Israel! Dont do this wicked thing . Tragically, Amnon refused to listen to her, and since he was stronger than she, he raped her .

The baby who is born of adultery or rape is completely innocent and there is no Scripture nor is there precedence for having such a baby killed or the fetus aborted.
