So It Was Written: The History Of The Satanic Bible By Anton Szandor Lavey
Most religions dont begin with a book those books come later. They begin with one or two people, who gather other people around them. As a group, they formulate some ideas about their beliefs and they decide what words theyll use to describe themselves and their deities. They collaborate on a liturgy, or maybe one guy goes off into the woods and comes back with some given wisdom. Its written down, or carved into a tree or painted on a cave wall. The big books come about years later, and theyre translated and augmented. Different versions appear and different people interpret them differently.
The Satanic Bible didnt happen that way. It was born of both inspiration and necessity it incorporated rituals already in use by a church, and a philosophy that was being expressed in published articles and via other media, but all from the same source: the mind of Anton LaVey. The ideas that were making up the philosophy of Satanism, and their expression through the rituals that had been created to exercise this philosophy, were brought together to write what would become the foundation of the Satanic religion and historys most influential book on Satanism.
As confident as he sounds in the above, LaVey was not entirely sure he wasnt coming off as a publishing rube, and qualifies his fervor to his prospective agent thusly:
I expect to have the bible completed within the next month.

Ultimately a meditation on the corruption of power, Anatole Frances Revolt of the Angels utilizes the theological metaphor of Satan as a force favoring free inquiry, the War in Heaven a metaphysical battle against universal tyranny.
Can Satan Read Our Minds Or Is He A Thought Influencer
In this encounter with Eve, there is no indication that Satan can read minds. There is however every indication that Satan can influence thoughts. In his opening question in this conversation notice that he asked Eve a question. Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden? The purpose in asking the question was simply to begin to influence her thoughts and her thinking. This is not unusual because he still uses the same tactics today. He may bombard you with questions with the sole purpose of influencing your thoughts. For example, here are some thought influencing types of questions.
- Do you think God still loves you after what you did?
- Everyone else is getting credit and recognition, dont you deserve recognition too?
- That person is a Christian and they are doing it, so it must be okay for you to do it as well?
- You know this is what you really want so why not go and get it?
The list of these types of questions can go on and on but they are all designed to influence your thoughts. When these questions pop up in your mind it may appear Satan can read your mind, but the truth is he is responding to your demonstrated patterns of behavior. Remember Satan is not a mind reader, but he is a thought influencer.

Old Anton LaVey published his Satanic Bible juuuust over 50 years ago. As a Modern Satanist, is this a book that you must read?
Technically the answer is no, in that you dont have to do anything. Satan isnt going to make you the book doesnt give you the password to get past the bouncer into the cool part of Hell after you die avenues for compulsion are minimal.
But in practical terms the answer is probably yes, because familiarity with the reference makes life easier. Almost every other Satanist has read it, its very likely to come up, not knowing the material will at some point make things inconvenient or awkward, etc.
Any chance we can put this off until never instead?
A row developed on the Satanic Temples Facebook forum a few days ago, with a councilmember suggesting that Modern Satanists should treat LaVeys Bible as obligatory reading.

The Book Of Leviathan
The final book of The Satanic Bible emphasizes the importance of spoken word and emotion to effective magic. An Invocation to Satan as well as three invocations for the three types of ritual are given. The Invocation to Satan commands the dark forces to grant power to the summoner, and lists the Infernal names for use in the invocation. The Invocation employed towards the conjuration of lust is used for attracting the attentions of another. Both male and female versions of the invocation are provided. The Invocation employed towards the conjuration of destruction commands the dark forces to destroy the subject of the invocation. The Invocation employed towards the conjuration of compassion requests protection, health, strength, and the destruction of anything ailing the subject of the invocation. The rest of The Book of Leviathan is composed of the Enochian Keys, which LaVey adapted from Dees original work. They are given in Enochian and also translated into English. LaVey provides a brief introduction that credits Dee and explains some of the history behind the Enochian Keys and language. He maintains that the translations provided are an unvarnishing of the translations performed by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the 1800s, but others accuse LaVey of simply changing references to Christianity with those to Satan.
Why Is Thought Influence So Important
Knowing that Satan will attempt to influence your thoughts may cause you to ask why this is so important? Lets remember what I said earlier about the heart and mind often being used in scripture interchangeably. With that consider this verse from Proverbs.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.Proverbs 4:23
The reason Satan seeks to influence your thoughts is because he knows that is your control center. Everything you do comes from the things you think about. There has never been a decision or choice you have made without thinking about it. Some you have thought about momentarily and others you have thought about for long periods of time, nevertheless the choice you made was after you thought about it. The same thing was true of Eve in the garden. Satan influenced her thoughts. She considered the options, and she made a decision based on the influence that happened on her thoughts. This doesnt just happen to Eve this happens to all of us. Consider what James says.
But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.James 1:14-15

Kindness To Those Who Deserve It Not Love Wasted On Ingrates
There is nothing in Satanism that encourages wanton cruelty or unkindness. There is nothing productive in thatbut it is also unproductive to waste your energy on people who will not appreciate or reciprocate your kindness. Treat others as they treat you will form meaningful and productive bonds, but let parasites know that you will not waste your time with them.
What Does Satan Know About Us
In order to answer the question can Satan read our minds, we need to understand what Satan actually knows about us. When the Bible speaks about the mind it is often referring to the heart. They are often tied together and sometimes used interchangeably. A very famous proverb says this.
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he – Proverbs 23:7
Since this is true here is what Satan knows about us. He knows our tendencies, our weaknesses, and our areas of temptation that we may be prone to. This type of information that he knows about us is not because Satan can read our minds, but because he is a master at studying our behavior. Satan cant read what is in your mind, but he can see what you do and the choices and decisions you make. If he should attack you, he creates his plan of attack based on the areas of your life he has seen, by your behavior and choices, where you are most vulnerable.

Human Nature And Social Darwinism
Social Darwinism and the concept of human nature are ideas that are prevalent throughout The Satanic Bible. LaVey describes Satanism as a religion based on the universal traits of man, and humans are described throughout as inherently carnal and animalistic. Each of the seven deadly sins is described as part of humans natural instinct, and are thus advocated. Social Darwinism is particularly noticeable in The Book of Satan, where LaVey plagiarizes portions of Redbeards Might Is Right, though it also appears throughout in references to mans inherent strength and instinct for self-preservation. LaVeyan Satanism has been described as institutionalism of Machiavellian self-interest because of many of these themes.
How Does Satan Engage People
There are not a lot of places in the Bible where we can read about Satans interaction with humans but there is one very famous incident that gives us some insight.
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden?
The woman said to the serpent, We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,but God did say, You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.
You will not certainly die, the serpent said to the woman. For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.Genesis 3:1-5
