The Pursuit Of Christian Character

1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord 3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. 4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.

5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.

Christian Character Involves A Choice

Some people believe that the holy spirit is a person. What does the ...

So we continue to preach Christ to each person, using wisdom to warn and to teach everyone, in order to bring each one into Gods presence as a mature person in Christ. For Christians, becoming Christ-like is the ultimate goal of our spiritual journey. To settle for anything less is to miss the point of spiritual growth. and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of Christ.

Character is influenced by our choices. Moreover, God builds character in the circumstances of our life. He does this as we experience situations in which we are tempted to do the exact opposite of what character looks like. Character development always involves choice. When we make the right choice our character grows and we become more like Christ. If you want to know what Christ-like character looks like, a great place to start is the nine character qualities given by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 5:22-23: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. If we are to develop a Christ-like character, we will need these qualities in our lives. Whenever we choose to respond to a situation in Gods way instead of following our natural direction, we develop character. Life brings all kinds of opportunities: conflict, disappointment, challenges, delays, and so on. As we are faced with lifes challenges on a daily basis and decide how to act, our actions become our habits and our habits become our character.

Have A Clear Vision Of God’s Plan

Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” We who have the Spirit of God need to have a clear vision of what God has planned for us mortals. To really develop Godly character, we need the driving motivation to achieve our goals. All of the aforementioned tenets will become easier to achieve if we know what the end result is going to be for all of us. In Revelation 1:6, John, speaking of true Christians, says that Christ “hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father.”

Paul said that he looked through a dark glass to understand God’s intentions . Paul knew in part he understood in partand our knowledge and understanding is also “in part.” Do any of us, for example, really know what it means to be a king? Do we comprehend the ability to appear and disappear as Jesus did after His resurrection? Do we grasp eternity and immortality? The plan that God has for us is really beyond our human understanding, but we need to try. Our minds need to be projecting us into that future world where we will spend eternity. We need to diligently search and meditate about what it means to be a king and a priest. Even though we know we are not “going to heaven” when we die, do we really understand how breathtaking God’s plan is for us? If we could get a glimpse of this Kingdom as Paul did on one occasion, it might spur us on to greater dedication.

Why Is It Important To Study The Various Characters In The Bible

The goal of reading about biblical characters isnt to follow their example but to understand how the Lord is at work in their lives. No matter your personality and struggles, there is someone in the Bible, you can relate to and learn from.

We read scriptures to study what the Word of God has to say about how we should live. The characters in the Bible give us examples of godly living and help us when we miss the mark. God works through humanity and by studying the characters of the Bible we find out how God can work in our individual situations.

Let us look at todays situation with the pandemic. We can refer to previous generations who have gone through a pandemic. This has happened for centuries, but God is still faithful. God still loves us, and God still has a plan for us. We are just born in the time when the pandemic was scheduled. So please do not get in a situation where you curse God and all the things that He has done for you. We did not come into this world to stay. At the set time, those whom we love have gone on to receive their reward. We will have to leave this world as well unless we are raptured up. Everyone will not be raptured . Some of us may leave before those events. God loves us and wants us to miss certain events. God is still good, and God is still faithful. God is still in control.

Second, ongoing spiritual growth in our life also grows out of a heart response to the things of God . Third, we relate to one another as Christians out of a willingness to do Gods will from our heart .

The Man Of God Flees From Sin

But you, as a person dedicated to God, keep away from all that.

1 Timothy 6:11

Keep away from all that can be translated flee. The man of God is identified by what he flees. We might think that Paul would say, Stand firm! or Fight! Scripture calls us to stand firm against the attacks of the devil and to resist him , but Paul doesnt say that here. Some things the man of God must wisely flee. In the context, it has to do with the evils associated with loving money . However, the need to flee sin is taught throughout Scripture: believers are called to flee sexual immorality , idolatry , and youthful lusts . Like Joseph fleeing from Potiphars wifethe man of God should run when it comes to sin. It has the ability to trap, dominate, and destroy him.

The word flee comes from the Greek word pheugo, from which we get the English word fugitive.2 The man of God is a fugitive running from a potential captorhe doesnt want to go back to sin he knows the dangers of it. Therefore, he flees. The word flee is in the present tensemeaning that the man of God should constantly flee these things.

Men and women of God are known by what they fleeungodly language, ungodly entertainment, discord, sexual immorality, etc. Are you a person of Goda holy fugitive? What are you fleeing?

ApplicationQuestion: Why is it so important for the man or woman of God to flee sin? Are there any specific compromises that you are especially vulnerable to?

Five Characteristics Of A Godly Man

1. Stand Strong

A godly man is expected to stand strong and hold fast to the truth of his Heavenly Father that was revealed through Jesus Christ even in the face of challenges, attacks, hatred, persecutions, criticisms, and sufferings. Now behold, I have made you today as a fortified city and as a pillar of iron and as walls of bronze against the whole land, to the kings of Judah, to its princes, to its priests, and to the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD. Jeremiah 1:18-19Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. 1 Peter 5:8-9Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. I Corinthians 15:58

What Does God Say About Women

What does the Bible say about Christian character?

Every time I hear someone say the Bible paints women in a negative light or that God doesnt respect women, my heart mourns because reading the Bible has shown me the exact opposite. When reading and interpreting the Bible, its important to maintain the cultural and historical context of the text. Doing the Every Word 90-day study of the Bible has helped me keep this in mind as I read scripture, but there are many other commentaries that offer this information as well.

So considering the cultural and historical context, the laws that God establishes in the Old Testament show an incredible respect for young women, old women, mothers, daughters, sisters, and widows alike. If you compare Gods laws to the laws and statues of the other nations around the Israelites at the time, you see that God upholds a covenant that honors and protects women and punishes any injustices done to them.

The Man Of God Takes Hold Of Eternal Life

Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12

InterpretationQuestion: What is Paul referring to when he says, lay hold of that eternal life?

The last command that Paul gives Timothy before seeking to motivate him is to lay hold of that eternal life. What does Paul mean by this? Isnt Timothy already saved? Yes, the call referred to is Gods effectual call to salvation, which happened when Timothy repented of his sins and followed Christ as Lord . His good confession probably refers to his subsequent baptism. But what does he mean by lay hold of that eternal life?

At times, Scripture refers to eternal life as something future and other times as a present reality. We see this in John 17:3 where Christ says that this is eternal life knowing God the Father and the Son. It is a present reality that we must seek and live out. This is exactly what Paul commands Timothy to doto live out eternal life.

The word for lay hold can be translated to take hold of, grasp sometimes with violence or to take hold of, in order to make ones own.10 This word was used of an angry crowd seizing Paul and dragging him from the temple . Timothy already had eternal life but he needed to seize it and live it outhe needed to live out his sanctification.
