The book The Comprehensive New Testament, by T.E. Clontz and J. Clontz, points to similarities between elements of the Lord’s Prayer and expressions in writings of other religions as diverse as the Dhammapada, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Golden Verses, and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It mentions in particular parallels in 1 Chronicles.

Rabbi Aron Mendes Chumaceiro says that nearly all the elements of the prayer have counterparts in the Jewish Bible and Deuterocanonical books: the first part in Isaiah 63 and Ezekiel 36 and 38 , the second part in Obadiah 1 and 1 Samuel 3 , the third part in Proverbs 30 , the fourth part in Sirach 28 . “Deliver us from evil” can be compared with Psalm 119 .

Chumaceiro says that, because the idea of God leading a human into temptation contradicts the righteousness and love of God, “Lead us not into temptation” has no counterpart in the Jewish Bible/Christian Old Testament. However, the word “ÏειÏαÏμÏÏ”, which is translated as “temptation”, can also be translated as “test” or “trial”, making evident the attitude of someone’s heart, and in the Old Testament God tested Abraham, and told David, “Go, number Israel and Judah,” an action that David later acknowledged as sin and the testing of Job in the Book of Job.

Father To The Fatherless: How Is God The Father The Perfect Father

While our earthly fathers will fail us in countless ways, God the Father will never fail us. He loves us with a love that isnt based on anything that we do. His love will never fail. He will always be there waiting on us, beckoning us back, when we stray. He does not have emotions like we do that come and go with the bat of an eye. He does not lash out at us in anger, but will gently rebuke us so that we can grow. He is the perfect Father.

29)Psalm 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in His holy habitation.

30)Psalm 103:13 Just as a father has compassion on his children so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.

31)Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?

32) Psalm 103:17 But from everlasting to everlasting the Lords love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their childrens children.

33) Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

34) Hebrews 4:16 Let us then approach Gods throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The Father Of Creation

God the Father is the creator of all things. He is the Father of all creation. He commanded the entire universe come into existence. He created everything out of nothing. God is the source of life and it is through following Him that we can have abundant life. We can know that God is all-powerful by studying His being.

1)Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2) Genesis 1:26 Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

3)Nehemiah 9:6 You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them and you preserve all of them and the host of heaven worships you.

4) Isaiah 42:5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it

5)Revelation 4:11 Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.

6)Hebrews 11:3 , so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

9) Psalm 119:25 My soul clings to the dust give me life according to your word!

How We Ought Not To Ask For Other Things Except Only Those Which Are Contained In The Limits Of The Lord’s Prayer

YOU see then what is the method andform of prayer proposed to us by the Judge Himself, who is to beprayed to by it, a form in which there is contained no petition forriches, no thought of honours, no request for power and might, nomention of bodily health and of temporal life. For He who is theAuthor of Eternity would have men ask of Him nothing uncertain, nothing paltry, and nothing temporal. And so a man will offer thegreatest insult to His Majesty and Bounty, if he leaves on one sidethese eternal petitions and chooses rather to ask of Him somethingtransitory and uncertain and will also incur the indignation ratherthan the propitiation of the Judge by the pettiness of his prayer.

Reflecting On The Meaning Of The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord

This short prayer takes a mere 15-20 seconds to say, yet is filled with incredible meaning. If ever there was a prayer that summarized our faith and whats expressed in the Gospels, the Our Father is it. On his reflection on this prayer, St. Cyprian of Carthage, a third century bishop wrote, My dear friends, the Lords Prayer contains many great mysteries of our faith. In these few words there is great spiritual strength, for this summary of divine teaching contains all of our prayers and petitions.

If youve been a practicing Catholic since you were little, youve been reciting this prayer more times than you can count. Like anything we do repeatedly, saying this prayer silently or out loud becomes second nature.

Its important to remind ourselves to stop and reflect on the words we are saying. With the help of religious scholars and clergy, lets take a closer look at what each line means, and how we can apply this prayer to our lives. Because as Pope Benedict XVI wrote, The meaning of the Our Father goes much further than the mere provision of a prayer text. It aims to form our being, to train us in the inner attitude of Jesus.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Just as good food nourishes the body, the Good News nourishes the soul. The Bible instructs that man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God .

In this appeal, we pray for spiritual sustenance so that we can have the fortitude to go out into the world and spread His Message through our words and actions. This nourishment comes from the Word of God and from communion with Christ, who is the bread of life that comes down from Heaven so that whoever feeds on this bread will live forever .

Applications From Gods Fatherhood

The fact that Jesus authorized his disciples to call God, Father, was radical. As mentioned, this concept distinguishes the Old Covenant from the New. J. I. Packer considers the grasp of Gods fatherhood as essential to ones spiritual life. He said:

If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being Gods child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all. For everything that Christ taught, everything that makes the New Testament new, and better than the Old, everything that is distinctively Christian as opposed to merely Jewish, is summed up in the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God. Father is the Christian name for God.8

Kent Hughes called the doctrine of the fatherhood of God one of the most healing doctrines in all of Scripture.9 Therefore, this doctrine is critical for ones spiritual health and a good way to test our spiritual maturity and growth. We must continually cultivate our awareness, understanding, and practice of this essential doctrine.

Application Question: What should the reality of God being our personal Father teach or remind us of? Why is the understanding of Gods fatherhood essential to ones spiritual health?

Father In A Redemptive Sense

Now as we consider God being our Father, it must be noted that Christs words are not referring to God being the Father of all people. God is indeed the Father of all people in the sense of creation. In Acts 17:28, Paul declared to the Athenians that all people are Gods offspring. However, most times Scripture refers to God being Father in a redemptive sense instead of a universal one. Christ said to Nicodemus that in order to enter the kingdom of God, one must be born again . This is the very thing Christ has been teaching about in his Sermon on the Mount. Throughout, he has been distinguishing those who are part of his kingdom and therefore are born again. He said that they are peacemakers who will be called sons of God . They are the ones who have a greater righteousness than the Pharisees and scribes and therefore enter the kingdom of heaven . They are the ones who love and bless their enemies and therefore are children of their Father in heaven . And finally, they are the ones who obey Gods will instead of practicing iniquity .

But to all who have received himthose who believe in his namehe has given the right to become Gods childrenchildren not born by human parents or by human desire or a husbands decision, but by God.

Application Question: What is your experience with praying the Lords Prayer? In what ways have you found it helpful or not helpful?

Of The Clause: Forgive Us Our Debts Etc

The Lord’s Prayer for Kids – God Our Father: Matthew 6 | Bible Story (Sharefaith Kids)

AND forgive us our debts as wealso forgive our debtors.” O unspeakable mercy of God, whichhas not only given us a form of prayer and taught us a system of lifeacceptable to Him, and by the requirements of the form given, inwhich He charged us always to pray, has torn up the roots of bothanger and sorrow, but also gives to those who pray an opportunity andreveals to them a way by which they may move a merciful and kindlyjudgment of God to be pronounced over them and which somehow gives usa power by which we can moderate the sentence of our Judge, drawingHim to forgive our offences by the example of our forgiveness: whenwe say to Him: “Forgive us as we also forgive.

And some dreading this, when thisprayer is chanted by all the people in church, silently omit thisclause, for fear lest they may seem by their own utterance to bindthemselves rather than to excuse themselves, as they do notunderstand that it is in vain that they try to offer these quibblesto the Judge of all men, who has willed to show us beforehand how Hewill judge His suppliants. For as He does not wish to be found harshand inexorable towards them, He has marked out the manner of Hisjudgment, that just as we desire to be judged by Him, so we shouldalso judge our brethren, if they have wronged us in anything, for “heshall have judgment without mercy who hath shown no mercy.

And Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Temptation can cause us to sin and lead us away from God in ways that can be cumulative. God doesnt lead us to sin we do that all on our own because of the free will our Creator gave us. But our God is faithful and promises to provide a way out of any temptation that we may face .

In this supplication, we acknowledge that our free will brings with it human weaknesses. To overcome those weaknesses, we pray here for God to extend His guiding hand over us and grant us the discernment necessary to steer clear of temptation and sin.

The Lord’s Prayer Bible Scriptures Verses:

Matthew 6:9-13 – “This, then, is how you should pray: ” ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Luke 11:2-4 – “He said to them, “When you pray, say: ” ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ “

The text of the MattheanLord’s Prayer in the King James Version of the Bible ultimately derives from first Old English translations. Not considering the doxology, only five words of the KJV are later borrowings directly from the LatinVulgate . Early English translations such as the Wycliffe and the Old English, however, were themselves translations of the Latin Vulgate.

What Makes A Man A Father

The Lord

A good father makes all the difference in a child’s life. He’s a pillar of strength, support, and joy. … A good father loves his children, but he doesn’t let them get away with everything. He might disapprove of his children’s misdeeds, using tough love to prove a point, but he does so through the power of his words.

Of Our Supersubstantial Or Daily Bread

NEXT: “Give us this day ourbread which is epiousion,” i.e., “supersubstantial,“which another Evangelist calls “daily.” The formerindicates the quality of its nobility and substance, in virtue ofwhich it is above all substances and the loftiness of its grandeurand holiness exceeds all creatures, while the latter intimates thepurpose of its use and value. For where it says “daily“it shows that without it we cannot live a spiritual life for a singleday. Where it says “today” it shows that it must bereceived daily and that yesterday’s supply of it is not enough, butat it must be given to us today also in like manner. And our dailyneed of it suggests to us that we ought at all times to offer up thisprayer, because there is no day on which we have no need tostrengthen the heart of our inner man, by eating and receiving it,although the expression used, “today” may be takento apply to this present life, i.e., while we are living in thisworld supply us with this bread. For we know that it will be given tothose who deserve it by Thee hereafter, but we ask that Thou wouldestgrant it to us today, because unless it has been vouchsafed to a manto receive it in this life he will never be partaker of it in that.
