Prayer For Emotional Strength

What does the Bible say about mental health? | Sermon by Dr. Clayton Oliphint | February 6, 2022

God, help me to be strong in the face of this battle. I know you promise to provide armor for me and a place of safety. I ask you to use the battle Im facing to draw me closer to you. Allow me to rest in knowing that though my strength fails, yours is ongoing. You graciously lend this strength to me when I am connected to you in spirit. Keep me close to you so that no weapon formed against me prosper. When I grow tired and weary and stumble and fall, your strength renews me. It makes me soar like an eagle and lets me run without growing weary. Let me understand deep in my soul that I only need to be still because you are fighting for me. I thank you for lavishly extending all these gifts to me. Amen.

Prayer For Courage And Confidence

When fear comes against me and threatens to end my hope, my heart will not be discouraged. Though all the cards are stacked against me, EVEN THEN, I will be confident. The one thing I ask, God, is that I may live in your continual presence. Set my eyes on you, your steadfastness, and your unfathomable ability to create beauty from ashes.

For in my worst days, you surround me and protect my spirit, restoring my soul with inexplicable joy. I will take the joy that you scoop and pour into me and I will use it to praise your name. Do not hide from me, God! You are my helper the only one I trust with my spirit.

I remain confident of this: I will see your goodness and your glory in my life. Let this moment now be a catalyst in my story. You, the author and finisher of my faith see every plot twist well before I am aware. Guide my path so that no matter what, it leads me closer to you.

I love and adore you, my most precious God.

The Gift Of Healing Is Biblical

The Holy Spirit gives gifts to the Church , like the gift of healing . God knows best and He distributes the gift of healing according to His will .

Besides honoring God and glorifying Jesus, healing is also for the common good of the Church . Healings are also a strong sign the reign of death will come to a redemptive end .

Jesus healed while proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and gave His disciples and others power and authority to heal diseases as they also proclaimed the kingdom of God .

Its wise to distinguish between physical and spiritual healing. For example, Isaiah 53:5 is often misapplied. The context of this passage is spiritual healing, not sickness or disease.

Emotional Connection With God Helps Us Value Emotional Connection With Others

what does the Bible say about mental health ...

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.Philippians 2:1-7 NIV

What I love about this passage is that it seems to explain how our emotional connection with God helps us connect with and love people around us. In other words, experiencing encouragement, comfort, tenderness, and compassion in my own relationship with God will enable me to share those things with others.

I tend to have a hard time connecting with and valuing others above myself. I know its a good thing to do, but putting it into practice is hard for me.

Recently, I was feeling that way in my marriage.

But the godless in heart nurture anger They do not call for help when He binds them.

Job 36:13 NASB

Biblical Remedies For Emotional Healing

Several years ago I fell down some stairs in my home. The pain was so great it literally knocked the wind right out of my lungs. Thankfully, my knees and shins were just bruised and not broken. But that fall left an impact on my body leaving me with deformed shins several years after the incident. The same premise applies if we cut ourselves knowing the gash will leave a scar.

Physical wounds and scars are easier to talk about and heal from as opposed to emotional wounds and scars. But as humans, we all encounter emotional pain of some sort seeing how we live beyond the gates of the Garden of Eden.

For several years now, Ive been riding an emotional roller coaster I never wanted to get on. With a shattered heart I couldnt understand how I was going to live through what was now my story. My heart was broken and I wanted to numb the pain so I can just move forward in life but numbing the pain of my heart wont mend my heart.

The mending of a broken heart does not come from man. It comes from the Messiah. Gods Word gives us remedies for our pain and we are tasked with the responsibility of embracing the scriptures applying them to our lives. In other words, God does His part. We do ours.

Inner Healing : Healing Emotional Wounds

This is one of the most vital and important areas of deliverance ministry that we cannot overlook. While it is important to cast out demons, it is just as important, if not more important, to minister to the emotional wounds. Emotional wounds are one of the most common reasons that deliverances can fail or demons seem to keep coming back and regaining inhabitation within the person. I need to make it clear that if you are going to be in the deliverance ministry, it is an absolute necessity that you learn about emotional wounds and how to bring the person to the point where they can receive inner healing from the Holy Spirit.

Our goal is not to forget a hurtful event or trauma, but to receive healing for that event, where the Holy Spirit removes the stinger from it. When we look back upon a healed wound, we can see it in a different way, because it has been healed and is no longer painful to look back upon.

Identifying emotional wounds

The first thing we need to do is identify the problem, and realize the need for inner healing. Below is a common list of common symptoms to look for in somebody who has an emotional wound:

Inner rawness: theres often a sense of inner rawness and hurt that doesnt seem to go away.

Irritability: its easy to become irritable with others, even if they arent doing anything wrong!

Little or no tolerance: there is a low tolerance issue with others, where you expect and demand from them.

Be honest with yourself!

Emotional Pain Healing And Forgiveness: What The Bible Says

What Does The Bible Say About Mental Health

If you are breathing then youve been hurt by someone. It is one of those things that happens to all of us, and not once but throughout life. Theres a good chance it has happened even today or a few days ago. This emotional pain we feel manifests on different levels ranging from the kind that lasts a few hours to the one that cuts through the soul and can last months or even years.

So how does God view emotional pain and what should we do about it? I want to focus on the one that tends to linger: the difficult type which stays on your mind. First of all let me say that if you are hurting now, be comforted, God sees and cares. And thats why he impressed on me to write this, because he does care.

Let us now examine this pain and understand how we should handle it.

Why do people hurt others?

As we try to come to terms with the pain we feel, we often wonder why the person/people hurt us, because more often than not it is undeserved. We look back and note the good we did and it does not seem to make sense. The problem is that we always look at ourselves and yet it rarely has anything to do with us. Granted sometimes we reap what we have sown but in those cases we know so theres no mystery.

The irony is that many times what they want is supposed to soothe their own pain or dissatisfaction with life. It is not really your fault that their circumstances are that way. You just happened to be close to them and therefore you were affected. It could have been anyone else.

What The Bible Says About Emotional Healing

Whether fear, anger, joy or painhow does God restore us?

Posted in Deepen Your Faith, Jul 31, 2018

Excerpted from The Women’s Study Bible.

Emotions are God-given, spontaneous responses to events. A person perceives an event in a particular way, and an emotion is aroused that leads to one of at least three responses: The emotion is allowed to escalate so that it becomes destructive to yourself or others its validity is denied or it is directed in a manner appropriate and healthy for the situation.

Emotions themselves are neither good nor bad. The problem lies in the thoughts that produce emotions and in behaviors resulting from emotions. Because they are spontaneous, emotions do not last for an extended period unless they are nurtured by the mind and will. Emotions are a caution light reminding us to re-examine what we are thinking. Thus, Paul does not condemn anger but counsels the Ephesians to deal with it quickly. Anger, when wedded with hurt and shame, can develop into bitterness and provide fertile ground for further temptation .

When a person is shamed for having an emotional response such as fear or anger, her tendency is to protect herself by blocking these emotions from conscious awareness. She, being bound by shame, is unable to express the emotion in appropriate, healthy ways.

Christians Can Hinder Their Healing

Christians can hinder their own healing in at least five ways.

1. Christians may have unconfessed sin.

James 5:16 says, Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. Confession is important preparation to healing.

We must take care with this, however. Some believe all sick people are guilty of secret sins. That idea discounts Scriptures like John 9:1-3 where Jesus made it clear neither a blind mans nor his parents sin caused his blindness. Critics can act like Jobs friends who didnt tell the truth about God to Joband God rebuked them .

2. Christians may neglect healing by failing to ask for it .

In John 5:6-7, Jesus looked into the heart of a lame man and asked, Do you want to get well? A strange question for a man who had been lame for 38 years! Maybe Jesus saw he was reluctant because he was addicted to the attention and charity he received. Perhaps his lameness became entwined with his identity.

Sometimes the Lord wants to heal us, but we havent bothered to ask him!

3. Christians may fail to surrender to Gods purposes.

Believers humility and readiness to receive what God has for them helps them cooperate with the truth of Romans 8:28-29. As believers pray for healing, they must believe that all things are somehow woven together into the Fathers good and holy plan to conforming them to the image of His Son.

4. Christians may hinder healing through lack of faith.

5. Christians may come to God with timid prayers.

Both Healing And Suffering Can Serve A Higher Purpose

God may use physical suffering for a higher purpose than we understand . God sometimes heals to bring glory to Himself and encourage others to put their faith in the Savior. We see this with the death of Lazarus and Jesus raising him back to life .

Other times, healing does not come. But even with impending death, there can be a higher purpose. A dying believer can point the living toward the Father and His message of hope in Christ.

Scriptures On Emotions That Will Help You Enjoy God

Find your delight in the LORD. Then he will give you everything your heart really wants.

Psalm 37:4 NIrV

God doesnt want us to talk to him begrudgingly, out of habit or duty.

He wants us to enjoy our relationship with him, to find delight in spending time with him.

Kids can teach us a lot about our relationship with God, and my 3-year-old daughter helps me understand this scripture. At this age, she is still delighted to be with mom and dad.

She loves when I sit with her and watch her favorite movies, eagerly pointing out all her favorite scenes for me to enjoy. She frequently bursts into our room to show her dad her latest drawings or update him on what her stuffed animals are doing.

Seeing her enjoy our company so much teaches me a lot about how it must make God feel when I enjoy being with him.

The Bible says that when we find our delight in God, he will give us everything our heart really wants. Our emotional needs for love, security, acceptance, and protection will be covered by God. That means our hearts will be satisfied and happy because of our relationship with him, leaving us freed up to care for other people.

To enjoy this kind of relationship with God, we have to learn how to experience God emotionally. Delight is a feeling. Without emotion, our relationship with God will become nothing more than a distant, empty tradition:

On the other hand, sometimes we listen to our emotions too much and they replace God and his Word .
